What's the best way I can support my year 3 girl who is always falling out with her best friends? The last summer term of year 2 was a bit of a nightmare, they were banned from playing with each other in the end!

Do you have any tips for getting your kids to talk about what they did during their school day?

Don't ask them until much later in the day. So maybe over dinner or in the bath.

Ask them questions they can actually answer. So not "what did you do today?" They didnloadsz went in the classroom, played, read, learned, ate food, went to the loo, went to assembly, did maths etc it's too much.

Ask things like "who did you sit next to at lunch today?" Or "did Mr Smith say something funny today".

How do you help kids who have anxiety about returning to school, even though they're not being bullied?

Haleyscomets · 11/09/2026 09:49

My DF is a primary school teacher and is overwhelmed by the numbers of reception age children (non sen) coming to school in nappies and unable to feed them selves with cutlery - are you seeing similar - and do you think schools should hold pre-school open nights for prespective parents giving support with this ?

MayCottage · 11/09/2026 19:03

My DS has a best friend, who has moved from the area, and schools, they are no interested in going to school as their friendship was very important (it was an unexpected move by the friends family - not 100% sure why). What as a teacher would you so to support a child like this were there are long established friendship groups ??

TheKestralNextDoor · 12/09/2026 13:10

How do you deal with the tearful ones, and anxious ones - making sure the children who are more confident are not on the periphery and being excluded due to the needs of the other children ?

junkoenoshima · 16/09/2026 11:52

What give a parent for their child’s first day at school - based on your experience on young children becoming more reliant their parents.

Captivatingcapybara · 16/09/2026 22:37

How can I get the balance of supporting a year 10 with homework please? They need some encouragement but I am wary of adding pressure of course.

BaryGarlow · 17/09/2026 08:21

My son was born just a few days before the cut off and is so far loving school. However, sometimes he comes home saying he’s played by himself or done an activity all by himself. I’m worried that he’s struggling to make friends as he is the youngest and it’s a very small class, is there anything I can do to help him?

JacCharlton · 17/09/2026 18:08

Do you favour a staggered start and for how long would you keep the shorter days - or do you think going full time from the start of term - and why for your answer - I feel some children (parents fault) are just not ready for school.

ShallWeDance · 17/09/2026 18:13

Do you think the age difference within a year group becomes less important as the children get older?

Runningshorts · 19/09/2026 20:38

Any advice for children who get nervous about "special" days (e.g. outings, non-uniform days, sports days, after school events). Both my primary kids work themselves into a state over these things that other kids enjoy.

ifone · 20/09/2026 15:34

Any suggestions for a child who is very shy in the classroom? He's confident at home, but struggles to express himself in front of his classmates at school.

Diddleydo43 · 24/09/2026 19:42

How long does a reception child take to settle in, average, usually, no siblings or direct friends at the school.

When should I get worried that they still seem unsettled.
