"No love when I say he;s autistic I don't mean he fidgets a bit I mean he can't talk at all aged 7, and has social understanding of a 12-18 month old if that, and will require 24 hour care for the rest of his life, so bog off".

OOh and I get more than £80 a week (I;m a carer). Lucky me. If I wasn't a carer and could put my child in daycare I could actually work at a professional level of course. God I want to ram this article down this smug women's throat. She's making me feel quite violent. I'm sure she would tell me that I am one of the families who does need support (but not patronising thanks katie), missing the point that I see what friends with HFA children go through, and that my son - although severely disabled in pretty much every sense of the word, looks entirely normal, so a few more articles like these and the quick "sorry he's autistic" just leads to further muttering, rather than any sort of understanding.

My dd has lots of autistic traits and so obviously has some kind of neurological disorder.
To read this almost belittles people whose children do generally have disorders of this kind.

Don't cry BH, she;s just a silly bint who hasn't got the faintest idea. What makes me Angry is that I know a number people with HFA/AS (presumably the target area for this tripe) who are driven to near breakdown becuase of the attitude that they could just pull themselves together a bit and tyr a bit harder. talk about invisible disability.

Well if you don; think we are not on the scale...I must be being thick because I thing you and her are argueing the same point...she is aying some children are really autistic where as others are just labelled as having it when they don;t. (no intention to piss you off! so sorry if I am!)

I don't think people realise how hard it is to get a dx of asd? My dd is extremely borderline and hard to dx because she is a girl and very HF.
So I really don't see how people get on the bandwagon. Children are not dx with asd willy nilly.

No she is saying that some children who have been diagnosed as autistic (presumably high functioning) are not autistic at all they are just naughty. It feeds from the idea that autism is just an extreme form of normal. It's not. There's a big difference between being autistic and not autistic. Even the very high functioning adult autistics I know, struggle, really struggle, even the successful ones. It's not a case of being naughty its a case of having a different sensory processing system, a different brain structure, a different understanding of the world. I see friends with children who are high functioning in masintream schools struggling to get this across to teachers all the time, and it causes huge amounts of damage.

well precisely BH. And of course I was overjoyed when ds1 got his dx because I could get 80 quid a week. wow what a happy day, easiest 80 quid I've ever earned - a week of autism for 80 quid - oh plus more because he gets higher rate mobility and I get carers allowance. Of course Katie hasn;t quite computed that that is considerably less than it would cost the state to provide 24 hour care for him.

dunno cod, I was sent the link. I don't buy the ST out of protest at them using the drivel Brian Deer produces. Have a lot of pent up emotion today- at least its getting rid of that. (TBH she wasn't having a go at the likes of ds1, so I can displace that emotion into fighting someone else's corner).

But BH is right- and this ignorance spreads and increases the tut tut chorus whenever I set foot outside. So it is worth getting irate about. Would love to send her a letter but can;t be bothered, she wouildn;t change the way she thought anyway. Hopefully she's vain and will googgle herself sometime. Katie Grant over heeeerrrrreeeee.
