Here are some suggested organisations that offer expert advice on special needs.

Katie Grant from The Times appears to have about as much understanding of autism as my cat.

\link{http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,2090-2177218,00.html\sigh}. Idiots like this make my life 100 times harder. "No love when I say he;s autistic I don't mean he fidgets a bit I mean he can't talk at all aged 7, and has social understanding of a 12-18 month old if that, and will require 24 hour care for the rest of his life, so bog off".

There that feels better. Silly cow.

We went to another slide today. Some NT kid was sat at the top not moving. DS1 waited really nicely for about as long as he could manage (10 seconds- I was impressed), tried to climb over the child but a bar was in the way, so started shoiving said child (who was about 6 or 7). NT kid started whinging in that way NT kids do (and I include my own in that assessment) "don't push me" in a stupid voice, anyway he moved and ds1 came down happy. NT child was still whinging at him, but ds1 just darted off. ha!

Well, dh and I are still happily married and ds never went to a nursery so according to this article I'm a 'hopeless parent'. Nice.

Still, after the day I've had I'd be quite happy to hand ds over to Katie Grant for a couple of months to see if she does any better.

cod · 14/05/2006 22:37

she is a resident of conk city

onlyjoking9329 · 14/05/2006 22:38

oh but you see our kids don't have autism it's all down to bad parenting Angry i am sure my father in law will believe every word of it, he famously said our three kids would be fine if we fed them meat and smacked them, he went on to prove this by saying he did this with his 2 kids and they are fine Shock

Blossomhill · 14/05/2006 22:40

oj - it's so sad the ignorance we have to deal with. even my own mum who is great said to me that dd should know that it isn't right to lash out and needs to be punished.
As I said, "if only it was that easy" :(

Pisces · 14/05/2006 22:41

I spent 8 years with a "hard work child"; attending every parenting class going that was "suggested" by the schools because in their opinion he was just "badly behaved" and it wasn't until my HFA son tried to kill himself was he finally dx. Angry. That woman has NO idea what life with a child with autism is like!!! And an article like that does not help us one little bit.Sad

"Badly behaved" (((snort)))Angry

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 14/05/2006 22:42

"clever and bookish" ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha Hmm so when ds1 screams and rolls on the floor because he wants to go and look at the next lampost and say "ay ay ain" (bye bye light) and I'm busy doing countdowns to get him away from the lamposts he's actually being clever and bookish. Of course. All 7 year olds scream and are distressed if witheld from cuddling every lampost in the surrounding 5 miles.

oh this woman is priceles.. BY the same process of elimiation I must be a hopeless parent as well pixel.

I think the Times should be bloody ashamed of themselves printing this article.

cod · 14/05/2006 22:45

bit like th papry private ed article

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 14/05/2006 22:46

jimjams you need to get him hugging and stroking trees, then you can pass him off as a nature lover. dd2 loves trees. a little too much. it can take ages tov get home some days befcause of the amount ofn trees on the route.

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 14/05/2006 22:48

Nah trees don't turn on and off. Like lights. He likes to raid our spare bulb drawer and walk around holding a bulb above his head (seriously). A coupld of weeks ago a bulb went, dh replaced it with a low ebergy lightbulb and ds1 went ballistic. Screamed the place down, grabbed a chair, put it underneath the light, pulled me to the light bulb drawer and made me change it to a normal one!

OP posts:
misdee · 14/05/2006 22:49

they now do low-energy ones shaped like normal bulbs. i swear i have seen them.

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 14/05/2006 22:50

Most flash though (like fluorescent bulbs) I think its that that he can't bear.

misdee · 14/05/2006 22:51

hmmmmm good point.

Tiggiwinkle · 14/05/2006 22:53

Why do people get paid for writing rubbish about things they so clearly know nothing about? This article is so superficial and stupid!

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 14/05/2006 22:54

Oh she's a right charmer. \link{http://www.prospect-magazine.co.uk/article_details.php?id=3475\check this out} not sure I want to read something that starts "The mentally handicapped have laways made me nervous".

OP posts:
Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 14/05/2006 22:55

ooh its better "The mentally handicaped have always made me nervous. They make me nervous still". Who the hell is this woman?

OP posts:
arfy · 14/05/2006 22:57

oh for goodness sake

moronic journalists have always made ME nervous

I am feeling very cross today, silly bint

Tiggiwinkle · 14/05/2006 23:00

Unbelievable! I just cannot understand why her views are given space when she is clearly so ignorant.
