Awake with newborn, anyone else? :)

My little boy is nine days old. He sleeps pretty well during the day but at night just wants to be held and breastfed. He doesn't settle in his moses basket at night (but he will quite often do so during the day)

Anyone else up doing the same?! I'm not keen on the idea of co-sleeping but would be grateful for any advice. Baby sleeps in a gro-snug and we have a dream sheep but I'm guessing this frequent feeding and love of cuddles in the night is probably just par for the course at this early stage? 😊 I am napping during the day so I'm probably averaging about 6 hrs sleep in a 24 hr period.

Back to normal last night for us with two wake ups. He's still snotty but slept much better.

NinaMarieP · 15/09/2017 05:20

We seem to be going backwards 😫 after two 7 hour stretches early in the week.

Last night feeds were at 3.10, 6.30 & 8.20

Tonight they've been at 1.50 & 5...

LadyNymeriaGhost · 15/09/2017 05:45

It's so disheartening when they start to do well, only to go backwards again. But if they've done it once, they must be able to do it again, right?

NinaMarieP · 15/09/2017 23:04

Today was pretty much a write off. I was feeding him again at 7.30, and he dozed/fed through til after 9 and then cried pretty much all the way through to 2pm apart from a twenty minute nap.

He then slept from 2-4, on me, but woke up a bunch of times and had to be rocked/dummy put back in.

My OH got home just after four and held him while I showered - and suddenly he was much more settled! Then he had another feed and slept until 9.30. Now he won't go down again.

Every night for at least two weeks he's had his late evening feed and gone straight into his basket with no fuss. But tonight, no, he's wide awake, even though he often has little/no sleep in the day and a long evening sleep.

I have 4 and a bit oz of breast milk in the fridge though so my OH is going to try him with a bottle later so I can get a decent sleep.

Fingers crossed he takes it! 🤞

Lallypopstick · 16/09/2017 03:15

Nina that sounds so frustrating. Good that you've got the expressed milk to try with him to give you a break. I hope he went down after that.

My baby has slept loads today, I think because he has a cold and just doesn't have the energy to do much else. He was asleep for bed at 10pm and woke at 3am which I think is our longest stint yet! This had better be the start of longer chunks and not just cold-related!

NinaMarieP · 16/09/2017 06:20

OH got him to sleep and I went off to bed.

Best bit is that he took a 4oz bottle and went back to sleep! So I wasn't woken until 6 Grin!

I'm going to have to get expressing as this sleeping thing is fab 😂

LadyNymeriaGhost · 16/09/2017 07:46

Wow! That does indeed sound fab! We've started getting a bit of a pattern of 9-5. He'll feed and then go back down for another hour or two. I've swapped him to the 2.5 tog sleeping bag now it's dropped a little cooler, and that seems to be making a difference.

Jellybean2017 · 16/09/2017 13:40

We have switched to combination feeding, expressed milk and formula. I can't handle the pain anymore!! Last night he managed 3x 2 hour stints of sleep, one of which was in the Next2Me crib, the other two were with me in our bed. Six hours of (broken!) sleep was a real luxury, despite having to express milk each time my husband fed the baby! Going to work on dropping a feed every few days and just try to keep expressing a few times a day so he still has the benefit of some breast milk. Glad you seemed to have better nights too 😊 weekends are so much easier with my husband off work!!

Hope that makes things easier for you Jellybean!

Out of interest how much milk are you able to get when expressing? I'm struggling to get more than 1.5 oz from each side before it stops completely. I've tried doing each side a second time (right away) but I get next to nothing.

Jellybean2017 · 16/09/2017 17:17

Thank you. Me too. Probably between 1.5 and 2 Oz from each side during the day. Although when I did it at 4am and 8am it was more like 2.5 Oz from each side!

Things are back to a routine of sorts for us, though I'm hoping things might get even better when this cold passes. He wakes himself up with all the snuffling in the early hours of the morning. He went down last night just before 9, woke at 1, woke at 3, then through until 6.30. Not bad for me either but I've woken up with a headache. Had to come downstairs to get some paracetamol, and he's asleep on my knee now mid-feed.

Went out for the day yesterday with some friends and he was the perfect baby - had a mega 2 hour+ nap and thankfully still settled for bed really early.

My partner was on his own from 1pm to 7.30pm yesterday so he owes me a nap today!

NinaMarieP · 17/09/2017 06:53

We're continuing to have a lousy weekend! He wouldn't settle last night again so I ended up taking him through to bed with me at midnight and he was on the breast until at least 1am. Honestly don't know if he was cluster feeding (usually he comes on and off if he's doing that though) or just needing comfort.

Anyway I dozed then, and then slept til 2 and put him in his basket when I woke then.

He was then up at 4 to be fed and stayed in bed with me again. So I got 2 whole hours to sleep alone!

Managed to get him in his basket at 6.30 and came to swap with my OH as he is going to give him a bottle this morning.

Ten minutes later and he's groaning and straining with wind.

How the hell can he sleep soundly on his back a few inches from me, but after ten minutes in his basket it's like he's trying to poo a tennis ball??? Poor OH will be awake with him from now on as he can't do the cosleeping thing.

LadyNymeriaGhost · 17/09/2017 09:50

DS has had a fussy couple of nights, he's getting really dependent on his dummy. I remember this stage from last time; if we can power through this bit then at c.6mo he'll learn to apply dummy himself and it helps with the self settling. I just need to keep telling myself this, on the 67th dummy insertion of the night!
And then he woke at 7.30 to poo. Lovely.

Mumagain2017 · 17/09/2017 10:42

I wish I'd seen this post at 3am

My newborn is 5 weeks old. I've posted on another thread that she doesn't sleep at night but is good in the day.
We have a sleepyhead too but it doesn't make that much difference to the Moses basket with a sleeping bag.

Anyway last night she fed at 11.30. 2pm. 4pm then awake 4.30-7 and that might sound good but feed at 2. Wind. She doesn't go back to sleep till 3.
She is also incredibly grunty and noisy which keeps us awake when she is asleep!
What's that about?? Thought babies couldn't stay awake longer than 45 mins at a time????
Argh
Someone said it gets better at 6 weeks

Bloody hope so. Feel like I'm going to crack. I'm an older mum with a 6 year old already. To old for this lol

NinaMarieP · 17/09/2017 11:43

Well we are 6 weeks today, waiting for a miracle!!

LadyNymeriaGhost · 17/09/2017 21:19

Fingers crossed for a good night, everyone. DS has continued to be really unsettled, has slept only in short bursts and has cried a lot today, so I'm not sure it's going to be the best one.

Lallypopstick · 18/09/2017 09:05

We had an early night with a 4 hour block before a wake up at just after midnight. Then again at 2.30, then 4.30 where he wasn't hungry but was coughing and sniffling a lot. Can't wait til this cold goes! I feel like he'll sleep a lot better.

verysleepymum · 18/09/2017 10:07

Awful night last night 😣

Dd would but not settle in basket at all. Convinced she now has reflux! Going to cut out dairy to see if there is an improvement. Got about 4 hours last night. Dd is 6 weeks on Saturday! Hoping for a miracle lol

NinaMarieP · 18/09/2017 17:23

My LO has put on nearly another pound since his last weigh in and seven cm in length since birth. He's now on the 98th percentile for height Shock

Last night was a little better. To use a hated MN phrase I boobed him to sleep in bed and fell asleep myself, then he did 3 hours in his basket, up for another feed, then back into his basket (very noisily) for 2.5 hours.

But again he has barely slept today, maybe an hour between three naps. Took him into town and had to feed him twice... mostly he screamed. 😰

Jellybean2017 · 18/09/2017 21:42

Ahh that's great Nina!
We have our 6 week GP check tomorrow. Hoping for sleep as it's an early morning appointment!
I am missing breastfeeding. I decided to breastfeed during the night yesterday to save making up formula / going to the fridge to get expressed milk. Still felt painful but more bearable when it's not constant!! Sterilising and making up formula is quite time consuming so if I can breastfeed as much as possible I will!

Good luck with your appointment Jelly I hope you get sleep!

I hope he settles down tonight nina

We were doing so well, bedtime routine all calm and peaceful and down in Moses basket no fuss at 10. Then at about 11:30 blood curdling screams, and refusal to be settled. Only just convinced dd to take the boob and she is feeding now and feeling more settled. Goodness knows what is wrong, wind/reflux/growth spurt Confused

Gosh this is hard! I need more sleep!

Mumagain2017 · 19/09/2017 01:48

I'm up!
Fed her at 11.30 after she slept from 9.30 the back to sleep at 12.20 and awake again.
A nice 3 hour chunk but too early Sad
Now i know she doesn't need to feed again it's only been an hour or so but it keeps her quiet...

NinaMarieP · 19/09/2017 12:23

We had a better night thanks, Very. He slept the evening away on Daddy and I got two hours in bed then he was in his basket from 12.15-4.45 and 6-7-7.15. After that he was windy and came into bed with me until 9.30.

verysleepymum · 19/09/2017 18:25

Anything to get through the night feeds mumagain Grin there is not a lot the boob won't solve!

Glad your night was better Nina long may it continue!

My night was similar 10-11:30 12:30-3:30 4-5:30 6:30-8. Just about bearable level of sleep deprivation!

Here's hoping for a good night!!
