hasn't this gone far enough? these threads are being allowed to stand which considering the "policies" of the BNP and the views expressed by "activists" is appalling. yes, free speech is wonderful, but some of these threads can be seen as inciting racial hatred, there are many, many, disablist, homophobic, racist remarks made and implied and they always go the same way. the threads are started to cause a bunfight. the BNP will not get anymore supporters on here, so why be deliberately controversial?

mn is a self-moderated site. this is great and one of the reasons i use it. however, the mners are now moderating and saying that we have had enough. we have complained a LOT about this type of thing - please take note!

OP posts:
scoutliam · 12/05/2010 19:53

Pag, surely mn is not the only place that parents here this crap?

If it is, good that's great, but it's dangerous to think that an alarming number of people hold these idiot views.

They need to be recognised and fought against, not banned from speaking.

champagnesupernova · 12/05/2010 19:54

maisflannel at what you said it.
But if you didn't report it and it wasn't deleted then you were effectivly condoning it.
MNHQ can only moderate what's brought to their attn and short of banning someone their main power is to delete messages that go against the spirit of the site.

callmeDave · 12/05/2010 19:55

She won't be ignored. Every time she posts there will be a newbie or relative newbie or someone who has never clicked on a muslim/racism/sn thread before because its never concerned them before and there she will be, banging on.

I think MN is one of the few public forums where people say what they really think.

Anything illegal or personal insults will be deleted anyway.

The BNP shit is happening because there's been an election. It will die down and pass.

Meanwhile I trust MNers to expose the BNP arguments as being a load of shite.

HerBeatitude · 12/05/2010 20:02

oh it's about daftpunk. (sorry hadn't read rest of the thread)

I think she should be treated as a troll really (because that's how she functions), I assumed all the BNP threads were by lots of different people.

I have ignored them, am not interested in debating whether nutters' policies on something or other are reasonable. Especially if they are started by the same old troll.

MalsFlannel · 12/05/2010 20:02

CSN - I totally understand where you're coming from. But I'm glad it wasn't deleted. Because there it sits in all it's glory.

ALso, I'm not really that bothered about DP's opinion of me, and being told to piss off is no big deal TO ME. I would feel very differently if I were gay/Somalian(BIG bugbear of DP's)/muslim/parent of a SN child and I was effectively being told by MNHQ to "suck it up" because that is what I believe is happening.

(that was a bit garbled, sorry)

callmeDave · 12/05/2010 20:02

scoutliam Its different in RL. This is a parenting website and people are entitled to talk about minority interest parenting subjects without having there lifestyle/DH/DCs slagged off for no reason.

People should be able to talk about special schools, same sex relationships and to veil or not to veil without being drawn into pointless circular arguments.

I wouldn't initiate a conversation at the bus stop about being racially abused at toddler group because it would be socially awkward and I would be setting myself up for more abuse. I should be able to do it here because, in part, thats what mumsnet is for.

Also in RL people don't make an offensive comment then run away, they stay and debate with you.

pagwatch · 12/05/2010 20:03

scoutliam

well no. Wankers can shout things on the bus. But i would not be recommending to them thatthey go to the bus because it is entertaining and supportive.

I don't understand what point you are making?

Is it that I should be allowed to call you a cunt because some bloke on a bus might shout that at you?

Ewe · 12/05/2010 20:05

MNHQ can ban people and delete things that go against the spirit of the site, and the BNP threads do that. I don't understand what the hold up in deleting them/her is, it's a personal business and they can do what they like.

I was asked to change my election name (EweStupidToryVoters) as it could be perceived as offensive and MN is here to make parents lives easier etc. Despite my name being a light hearted joke - I have a baby with a Tory I don't hate them or even dislike them - I changed it at the polite request of HQ and understood.

So free speech has it's limits, as a site the ethos is to make parents lives easier, BNP threads go against that ethos wholeheartedly. Surely the end result here is deleting the threads or banning the culprit?

I am all for freedom of speech and have often defended dp as they are a legal political party but you know what, some people don't deserve freedom of speech, regardless of whether it might just about be legal and another 500,000 idiots agree with it.

Unlikely to be able to ever make the BNP an illegal political party but we can sure as hell stop giving them a platform.

Greensleeves · 12/05/2010 20:05

DP has said thaty she WILL STOP posting racist/homophobic remarks now

so should we give that a chance?

callmeDave · 12/05/2010 20:06

If someone calls you a cunt on the bus the in theory they will be thrown off the bus.

elliemental · 12/05/2010 20:06

I am wondering if MNHQ are so silent because they fear Dp will run off squealing to some right-wing rag about ''being banned from that MN webste for my views...poor me...persecuted ...''

I am not trying that one out

MalsFlannel · 12/05/2010 20:08

GS - I don't believe her.

RunawayWife · 12/05/2010 20:09

I strongly feel that if we ban BNP threads we will be starting a slow decent in to banning all sorts of other threads.

While I do not like what DP has to say, I do think she has a right to express her views, also from seeing the common sense point of view from everyone else is a good thing.

I had no idea about some of the BNP policies until I saw some of the stuff on here, I was educated to new extents of their vileness.

I think that grown up debate is a good thing, if anyone is offended report the post/thread also the hide button.

ChickensNeedOpposableThumb · 12/05/2010 20:09

Ooh, interesting post Ewe WRT being asked to name change.

AndieWalsh · 12/05/2010 20:11

Referendum, anyone?

On a serious note:

She's a troll. Get rid.

ImSoNotTelling · 12/05/2010 20:11

Hmmm

So if DP promises to stop...

But we've all been here before haven't we.

This thread must look dreadful to people who are fairly new or haven't had that much to do with DP. But honestly this is the result of months (years) of it getting worse and worse and worse.

There have been more promises of change than I can remember.

daftpunk · 12/05/2010 20:11

ellie;

I am a massive fan on MN and would never do that

I have integrity...

I'm not some spineless idiot...I would take it on the chin and that would be it.

daftpunk · 12/05/2010 20:12

Agreed, justabout. The BNP stuff is just a trolling tool, IMO.

elliemental · 12/05/2010 20:15

DP I'm not saying you would.

I'm saying perhaps the fear of such a thing is why MNHQ is not addressing this issue.

I'm sure you are a woman of your word.
