We've deleted the Madeleine McCann thread

JustineMumsnet · 04/05/2009 22:34

Because had we deleted all the posts that were worthy of deletion contained within it we would have lost half a thread, and what remained would have made no sense.

We would like to remind folks that Mumsnet's central philosophy is to make parents' lives easier. The McCanns are parents, they haven't been found guilty of anything and they have lost a child. By all means discuss the issues around this tragic case but please don't attack them personally here.
Thanks,
MNHQ

Daftpunk I was referring to the comments towards the end like I said, even I was gobsmacked at the apparently well founded accusations! It was a bit much.

Although I imagine most of my posts were deleted too so heyho.

mamadiva;

i didn't read all the thread tbh...joined it halfway, but from what i saw there was only one or two posts that i thought were a bit near the mark...the rest...nope, and certainly not your posts md.

piscesmoon · 05/05/2009 08:12

I am very pleased that you did-I left early on and gave up reading it it was so vile.

mamadiva · 05/05/2009 08:16

Ach well we'll never know what was deleted and what was not, now will we DP?!

Probably the offensiveness of the posts containg coldplay

Hulababy · 05/05/2009 08:17

Good call.

I read most of the thread on and off as it unfolded and some of the comments were definitely verging on libelous, if not already so.

It continues to amaze me some days how mean spirited some people can be, even where there is a lost child involved. Oh well, if it makes them feel good must be okay then TBH I am just glad I dont have to live with all those negativve nasty feelings building up inside me.

RyanAirVeteran · 05/05/2009 08:45

Here's hoping it was pulled before a journo got their hands on it. They would have a field day with it.

Who are these vile people and how did they find MN ? You have to wonder what sort of upbringings they had to think that that sort of behaviour is the norm.

mamadiva · 05/05/2009 08:49

LOL.

rutyfruty · 05/05/2009 08:54

dp Madonna has not lost a child. Once again you make a comparison which reveals that you see the McCanns as entertainment fodder rather than human beings.

mamadiva · 05/05/2009 08:56

oh good god can we turn this round again people!!!

I assume this was why they deleted the other thread.

dollius · 05/05/2009 09:23

I think deleting that thread was a good call.

I have never understood the vitriol against that couple.

thumbwitch · 05/05/2009 09:26

Glad you pullled it - I avoided it because it doesn't need rehashing on this forum (or, tbh, anywhere until all the facts are known)

Thebolter · 05/05/2009 09:34

Amen to that. Thank you MN, the thread was horrible.

daftpunk · 05/05/2009 09:35

it's interesting that so many people who wern't on the thread seem to have read it

Robespierre · 05/05/2009 09:37

Yes dp, that's because it was at top of active convos all day and many people will have clicked on it, read parts of it, and realised that it was too vile to participate in.

Ledodgy · 05/05/2009 09:37

Exactly Robespierre.

mamadiva · 05/05/2009 09:40

Well I actually thought on the most part it was an interesting discussion. Were some posters getting a bit Poirot on us but other than that it was fine!

Everyone has an opinion and this subject brings out the extreme in our POV so bound to be problems at some point.

I've heard far worse on buses in Glasgow and there's more chance of being heard by a relative there.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 05/05/2009 09:42

The thread both sickened and saddened a lot of Mumsnetters, DP. We didn't post because why feed the vileness?

mamadiva · 05/05/2009 09:46

Because we need fed?

daftpunk · 05/05/2009 09:48

it wasn't vile, i am a mother of four children..i wouldn't take part in a thread i thought was vile, it was an interesting discussion....it will come up again because the parents are determined to keep this in the news...that's a good thing imo.

FelineFine · 05/05/2009 09:50

Thread has been deleted.

End of.

Good choice.

Whowantstobetthisonetakesover?

mamadiva · 05/05/2009 09:53

LOL this is going to turn into a cryptic thread about how bad that other thread was but there were some posts in that thread that were quite interesting and some were vile but no one will know or be able to prove which is which because said thread has since been removed...

onebatmother · 05/05/2009 09:53

Very, very sensible decision re libel I think.

WRT censorship - MN rules state no personal attacks. They are quite clear about that. It is their prerogative to decide what constitutes such an attack.

WRT the stuff relating to the negligible standards of humanity displayed on the thread as a whole - I am absolutely with ruty and said so on the thread. This is NOT the world of entertainment. This is the probable death of a 3 year old toddler like yours. No-one knows which horrors preceded that probable event. For god's sakes, have some pity.

I for one would be delighted if any of those who 'chatted' about this (to me) unimaginable horror, calling each other 'sleuths' or 'miss marple', were to leave MN permanently.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 05/05/2009 09:55

I'm leaving this thread now, but to me and many other people that thread was utterly vile. The cruel, nasty, unfounded speculation about the McCanns was way beyond the bounds of decency. I don't quite get your point that as a mother of four you would be incapable of posting on a vile thread - plenty of posters on it seemed to have no problem believing that a mother of three could kill her own child.
So no need to go all holier than thou, maternity is not a guarantee of saintliness I'm afraid.

daftpunk · 05/05/2009 09:57

i know md...i think it was a case of voyeurs wathing the voyeurs
