We've deleted the Madeleine McCann thread

JustineMumsnet · 04/05/2009 22:34

Because had we deleted all the posts that were worthy of deletion contained within it we would have lost half a thread, and what remained would have made no sense.

We would like to remind folks that Mumsnet's central philosophy is to make parents' lives easier. The McCanns are parents, they haven't been found guilty of anything and they have lost a child. By all means discuss the issues around this tragic case but please don't attack them personally here.
Thanks,
MNHQ

Star and Daily express had to pay damages for inferring parenting responsibility

Well done MN - I kept reading because I couldn't believe my eyes - spent a lot of time sat on my hands and resisting posting.

AitchTwoOh · 04/05/2009 23:10

that thread about the dad was NOT much nastier, not at all. it was actually a rather interesting discussion about culpability, i thought,

ShinyPinkShoes · 04/05/2009 23:14

Very glad it's gone

Good call MNHQ

scaredoflove · 04/05/2009 23:16

and the people on this thread would say that, the same people that wanted all talk 2 years ago bumped away, that still want it gone now

That poor man was crucified on here and so was the woman and many others

MintyyAeroEgg · 04/05/2009 23:18

Thank you for getting that vile thread off this forum.

TheFallenMadonna · 04/05/2009 23:19

Can you not see the difference?

FWIW, I did find that thread unpleasant, as well as an intersting discussion about culpability, but it was completely different to the McCann thread.

rutyfruty · 04/05/2009 23:23

Was surprised it stayed so long.

JodieO · 04/05/2009 23:26

Agree with SOL. I'm still surprised nothing happened in legal aspects, if they were; for example, a family on the "dole" I'm sure they would have been hung, drawn and quartered both in the papers (all of them) and by the police as they left their children on their own.

Not going to say anything else but I find the class differences quite disturbing.

Zinaide · 04/05/2009 23:27

Very glad it has gone, good call MNHQ

scaredoflove · 04/05/2009 23:28

I don't see a difference

I see parents that have lost children, parents that made a mistake/took eyes off the ball

one set no one is allowed to critisize

the other hateful things said freely

If this last thread was removed as this place is to support parents only, that one should have gone too and so should any others, I don't get the double standards

The world has discussed this case and will continue to do so, bad, good or just mad, but not here...why?

TheFallenMadonna · 04/05/2009 23:30

Pretty sure it wasn't the criticism of leaving their children that was the reason the thread was pulled. Did you read it all?

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 04/05/2009 23:32

the thread was deleted to stop this

-------------

PieceNharmoknee · 04/05/2009 23:33

The MM thread was awful, I was truly at the levles some posters had gone to get their point across.

scaredoflove · 04/05/2009 23:33

I did

Nasty things were said agreed but they were on other threads too, the dad one made me feel sick

I've seen much much worse on other sites, this is the only site that doesn't/members don't allow discussion/thought or speculation, which is human nature

AitchTwoOh · 04/05/2009 23:33

there was one thread on that buggy case, there was (eventually, thank god) one thread on the mccann case. seems quite equitable to me.

bigted · 04/05/2009 23:33

good call.
Some truly vile contributions on that thread.

Greensneeze · 04/05/2009 23:35

scaredoflove nobody is stifling discussion/speculation - that thread was full of outright accusations and really cruel comments

stop trying to revive it!

AitchTwoOh · 04/05/2009 23:35

"this is the only site that doesn't/members don't allow discussion/thought or speculation."

hardly.

scaredoflove · 04/05/2009 23:36

paulayates this isn't talking about events, this is asking why all opinion isn't allowed

I wasn't on the other thread as I don't have anything to say about it, I do hate censorship and only some peoples thoughts, no matter how nasty, are not allowed and quashed

so again you are trying to stop discussion

MintChocAddict · 04/05/2009 23:36

Some of the personal attacks against the McCann's on that thread were nothing short of outrageous. Hope certain posters are hanging their heads in shame, but I very much doubt it. Particularly when a few of them broke off midway through the thread to have a lighthearted discussion about their 'black' senses of humour.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 04/05/2009 23:37

well said greeny

Mumcentreplus · 04/05/2009 23:39
Hmm
LadyGlencoraPalliser · 04/05/2009 23:41

Thank you, Justine. That thread was making me feel ill.
