We've deleted the Madeleine McCann thread

JustineMumsnet · 04/05/2009 22:34

Because had we deleted all the posts that were worthy of deletion contained within it we would have lost half a thread, and what remained would have made no sense.

We would like to remind folks that Mumsnet's central philosophy is to make parents' lives easier. The McCanns are parents, they haven't been found guilty of anything and they have lost a child. By all means discuss the issues around this tragic case but please don't attack them personally here.
Thanks,
MNHQ

WTF?

chequersmate · 05/05/2009 09:58

You know the McCann's still have two young children to bring up and probably from time to time could do with advice and shared expereiences from other parents to help them do that.

I hope to god they don't come here for that

haveilosttheplot · 05/05/2009 10:01

how do you manage to be on here pretty much 24/7 then, daftpunk, moralising and browbeating about bad parenting in your own inimitable style?

This comment:

"it was a discussion, and quite frankly posters who are calling certain other posters "vile" and "disgusting" should be ashamed.......we are all parents on here you know!"

...is astoundingly hypocritical. If you and a few others had spared a moment's thought for the McCann family a great deal of those repugnant posts would never have been made. That thread really highlighted how divorced from reality some of you are. It's the same people who turn up on these threads time after time, vicariously picking over the grief of others, either piggy-backing on it or banding conspiracy theories about with gay abandon without one single thought for the real people involved. Including Madeleine on that thread I thought. It's stomach turning really.

Yet you continue in your self righteous ignorance, as though you think you are somehow a cut above. Unbelievable!

mamadiva · 05/05/2009 10:02

If you are on about me saying I was going to leave onebat sorry to burst your bubble but I ain't going anywhere

The sleuths and Miss marple thing was a piss take out of the people who were getting far to into teh research especially when someone said they knew the outcome, that was met with well would you care to inform the police taht you know what happened that night. I don't think anyone said that being serious.

Palliser I think that was the point that thread was trying to make...

But ach well movin on eh?

FelineFine · 05/05/2009 10:07

cute kittens??

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 05/05/2009 10:07

The point the thread made, whether it was trying to or not is that there are a lot of mothers out their who are quite astonishing in their lack of not just empathy for a fellow mother in the most tragic of circumstances, but even the smallest grain of compassion.
When I was at school and learned about public executions in history class I used to wonder what sort of person could possibly want to attend. I don't now.

mamadiva · 05/05/2009 10:07

awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

How old are they?

Niftyblue · 05/05/2009 10:08

Can`t believe its happening again on this thread

feline like the pics

mamadiva · 05/05/2009 10:09

I've explained my standing on this issue.

I won't get into it again, I don't feel the need at the time it was a discussion now it's just pointless.

And FWIW regards to public executions... depends on te crime and who it was against.

SallyJayGorce · 05/05/2009 10:10

I didn't see this thread but I have heard comments about the McCanns which made me feel so disgusted I left a baby group I used to attend. Someone was saying it served them right, essentially and went on about all the sacrifices she had made in terms of never going out in the evening etc. Resenting people for having a holiday didn't seem the response of people I wanted to hang out with.

The McCanns will regret their decision forever. They are in hell. I feel desperately sorry for them.

daftpunk · 05/05/2009 10:13

my youngest is at f/t school..i only joined mn 18 months ago...i wouldn't have had the time when my dc were babies. (i'm actually not on here that much)

i don't think i'm a cut above anyone on here, i like everyone on mumsnet, i just can't understand why i'm so disliked.

btw, i actually said i thought maddie was still alive, so not sure how that makes me negative??....

no point talking about this anymore.

rutyfruty · 05/05/2009 10:15

Yes LGP. Guillotine knitters.

Idranktheeasterspirits · 05/05/2009 10:16

I haven't read the thread, endless rehashing of the same points by the same people holds no interest for me.

However, can i ask mumsnet a question? If the Mcann thread has been deleted because of personal attacks, why weren't all the Jade threads deleted because of personal attacks?

Surely if it's one rule for one thread it should apply to all?

Am not wishing to rehash all the Jade stuff by the way but i would like to know.

haveilosttheplot · 05/05/2009 10:17

I didn't mean that to come across as strongly as it did - you are (believe it or not) one of the posters I like reading on MN. I am just horrified by the smug satisfaction that existed on that thread and that the hard core of conspiracy theorists didn't show a modicum of compassion for that poor family.

One poster notable by her/his absence is Saphire1 who was plainly in need of either psychological assessment or a good kick up the arse imo.

All just too dark for me.

onebatmother · 05/05/2009 10:17

I can't really understand you md.

But yes, I was talking about you and others. Daftpunk was equally without thought.

haveilosttheplot is quite right - it's vile, this regular invocation of some kind of sainted status as a 'mum' to cover an obsessive, salacious picking-over of this horror.

The thing is, see - this event is not part of a soap opera. The contemplation of it requires an entirely different set of responses and standards of humanity, but you and others seem unable to grasp that.

daftpunk · 05/05/2009 10:20

what? talking about the MM case on mumsnet means i'm into public executions ?

mamadiva · 05/05/2009 10:24

LOL Onebat, yes mam opinion differing to yours should be firmly shoved back down my throat to ensure nazi like planet...

I'm not going anywhere why should I?

I have'nt done anything wrong, I did'nt actually say anything in the way of a personal attack to anyone infact I was one who kept saying I felt sympathy for them but I did think they did a stupid thing and that they did not deserve what happened to them.

So that makes me unreasonable oh well? That's your problem not mine obviously...

ChloeOBrian · 05/05/2009 10:24

Good call MNHQ

onebatmother · 05/05/2009 10:31

It's not about an opinion which differs from mine though, mamadiva (though thank you for entirely matching my expectations, with your nazi comment)

You have no idea what my opinion is, precisely because I think it would be loathsome of me to express it on a public forum when I don't. know. the. facts.

I am accusing you, not of being wrong in your opinion, but of lacking any judgment in the expression of that (necessarily speculative) opinion.

mamadiva · 05/05/2009 10:36

Thing is though I did'nt speculate what I thought happened, your making out I did.

I did'nt actually say anything in the sort of a personal attack, theory and I also said there will always be speculation but there is no point in going on and dwelling on it because the 'facts' taht were being claimed were mainly biased against the McCanns infact I told the ones who went to far to wisen up and got shot down for that too.

Please do explain how that makes me vile, loathesome and nasty?

onebatmother · 05/05/2009 10:41

you're treating it as entertainment - like a bit of fun gossip. that's why.

haveilosttheplot · 05/05/2009 10:41

Partly because you so clearly revel in these threads perhaps?

haveilosttheplot · 05/05/2009 10:42

x-posts - maybe that should tell you something.

AitchTwoOh · 05/05/2009 10:46

idranktheeasterspirits, i presume it's because some comment over the Jade situation is inevitable because she is a celebrity and made her living (and then her boys' living) from being in the press. i don't think anyone accused herself of giving herself cancer or said they were glad she was dying etc, it was more about the press coverage and her and her family's role in that. quite different i think, although some discussion at some point of whether or not the McCanns might retire from the public arena is inevitable. poor, poor people, to think that they might still be searching for her in twenty years' time, i hope it's not the case and they can get some peace.

LooptheLoop · 05/05/2009 10:59

Very good decision to delete - there were some truly vile comments.
