Why do so many people get defensive about the idea that 'reasonable adjustments' should be made to assist people with a disability. I used to teach at a University, and when I attended a diversity workshop many lecturers were very keen on inclusive education, but went on to explain why their department was a special case, and why they shouldn't cater for students with disabilities. My DH was seen as being awkward when he pointed out that wheelchair users couldn't get to his office, and was told that it was OK because the students could just see him after lectures - but they couldn't even get into the lecture hall... There is too much casual discrimination against disability, as well as the truly offensive discrimination

The social model of disablity has done much to raise awareness of how the structure of society 'disables' people with imparements.

But it is also prone to unscrupulus manipulation. I can't get into specifics as I have been witness to one tribunal but some of the absurdities were explored in this film by SYMO (shameless link again )

Do you know what, until the youngsters of today realise that it is as wrong to call someone a Spaz (my ds has CP, his form of CP is Spastic Diplegia) or a Retard, as it is to call someone a Nigger; well until that happens nothing is going to change, people with disabilitys are still going to be second class citizens.
I defy anyone to tell me that they do not know ANYONE, who have used those words.

naughtalessnickerless dd has cp amd when the wankers call her a spaz to have a pop at ds, he tells them to get their facts straight and that she has athetoid cp.......then decks them.
