Why so much hate on MN?

@MNHQ
Why so much hate on MN?
Posters hiding behind complaints about the government, presenting themselves as reasonable actors, to push hate about asylum seekers, people with disabilities, benefit claimants..Mostly the same names all day everyday.
I am told to report - MN just not interested.
I am told to hide the thread..
Why isn't moderation better?
I know this will always exist and exists on other platforms but MN makes no effort to even try to anything about it.
You can't really sell MN as a caring, supportive site with all this stuff offered on a daily basis in active.

Around a quarter of voters currently plan to vote Reform or Restore, so doesn't it make more sense to assume that most right wing posts are real people (capable of being debated) rather than bots?

True. It comes up a lot but the site is better with the spectrum of voters, as much as some won’t like it.

I've just realised.

"Hate" is a word that is used in online discourse to avoid having to recognise anger.

Because if you acknowledge someone is angry, you acknowledge there's a reason they feel as they do. You may disagree with that reason vehemently, but you recognise there is a reason and you have to know what it is before you can dismiss it.

Whereas "hate" - well that's just irrational, just blind emotion. You can dismiss "hatred" without ever asking a single question.

Just thought that was interesting.

I don't think blocking posters is a good idea. Echo chambers don't help anyone's understanding. Whole boards fine, whole threads maybe, but not specific perspectives. Very slippery slope that.

@NormasArse , there was an interesting article in today’s Telegraph on that very subject if you can access it, it’s a good read. I hadn’t realised that the term was initially utilised by the left to describe themselves.
I once saw a post here from someone asking what is ‘our’ position on a particular issue. I find that incredibly sad the poor soul was desperate to know the ‘right’ way to think. We should all be able to listen to as many different opinions and perspectives as we can and then make up our own minds what we think. I tend to think there is a certain type of person (not necessarily on the left of politics but often) who just adopts whatever the current group think is without much actual thought. These people very much consider themselves to be morally superior and that their views are unquestionably correct. There are a few videos I’ve seen of American college students being interviewed after having protested and chanted ‘from the river to the sea etc. When asked which river and sea they are talking about they are clueless. That sort of thing. Woke.

I agree about the certain type of person who thinks like that and believes they are unquestioningly correct, but I suspect that these days, there are far more of them on the right than the left.

By the way, it is possible to be left-leaning and not be woke. Still, I'd rather be called left wing and woke than be right wing and racist.😁

Yeah get rid of name changing. I'd be well up for that.

Having been on the reseaving end of true nastiness to the point of thinking of doing something stupid I disagree.

I'm glad I'm neither - certainly not a left leaning hypocrite who calls everyone with a different political opinion, a racist.

Isn’t it just. Differing views are one thing, the level of hatred on some threads these days is something else. I’ve been here a decade and it’s completely different now.

Isn’t it just?

There are some threads where the rest of MN is compared to a cesspit.

Isn’t that hate? Horrible.

I’d say it was factual.

Anti-immigration rhetoric should not be tolerated anywhere, least of all a public forum for anyone to view. It's not an 'opinion' its hate pure and simple and the government needs to clamp down on it, if nobody else will.

Morning Debs. Awful isn't it. I'd say having an opinion on a forum is a hanging offence, or is that a far right metaphor to use?

It seems that most of the 'political' posters assume that "Brexit was bad" which can be debated but they go further in asserting that everyone who voted for Brexit is a twat or mentally deficient and they keep on saying these things and worse to be deliberately insulting as if that helps to strengthen their argument.
You have opinions so do we.

An opinion on a forum like mumsnet is talking about whether a work colleague is getting too close to your husband or not. Saying there are too many 'forreners' in the country is not an opinion, it is hate speech. And if this government actually believed in what it espoused they would be drafting up legislation as we speak to give police the powers to prosecute people in the same manner that they would if they decided to go on some hate rampage against gay people.

I don't have a problem with wanting to manage immigration. I just have a problem with the rhetoric used by so many, implying all asylum seekers are criminals, rapists and fake. People who knowingly whip that up are dreadful. The comments around the women who drowned earlier this year were horrific. Ditto the comments about the Huntingdon train attack and Southport. People use any adverse event to froth about evil immigrants. Then when they're shown to be wrong, they refuse to acknowledge that or veer into whataboutery.

Why do you not? By saying that you are implying that there is a limit for too many people who don't look like you being in the country. Why would that be a problem exactly? Please do share your reasoning, I am curious to know whether your excuse will be economic or cultural.

The comments about Charlie Kirk and Ann Widdecombe were awful as well. It's not just immigration that drives unsavoury opinions. Let's not keep pretending It's only one side that's driven by hate.

Yes, they were. Let’s not keep pretending that everyone with similar political views is equally hateful. There are right leaning posters here who manage to articulate their views without spite and venom, just as there are those at the other end of the spectrum who do the same.

I agree that there were many unpleasant comments about Charlie Kirk and Anne Widdecombe. However, there were also attacks on anyone posting legitimate criticism of their politics and behaviour. It was as if performative mourning was the only acceptable response.

Well I suppose when you prioritise critiquing the behaviour of murdered people, over the behaviour of their murderers, it tends to leave a bad taste.

Amazingly enough, some people can hold more than one thought in their heads at the same time. It is not wrong to acknowledge the reality of who the dead person was and at the same time be appalled at their murder. Life isn't simple and black/white.

So you it isn't just about numbers, it's about the number of people "who don't look like you"?

Exactly. It’s not necessary to canonise someone in order to abhor their murder.

I agree, it's amazing that some people can recognise true asylum seekers and people wanting to migrate, as opposed to those coming through the illegal route and destroying their ID. Appreciating two things at the same time, is such an understated approach.
