What's this 'show more/show less' nonsense for?!

Bloody hell, it's back. Still don't like it. I can see the point with long quotes but not posts. Could it at least be optional?

It's awful. I read the conversations here, I don't scan them. It makes me engage less, not more because it puts a barrier between me and what's being said.

MN conversations feel very natural. They flow. If I don't want to read a contribution in full, for whatever reason (and I decide if it's too long, or boring or irrelevant, not MN) , then I'll skim or skip to the next one in the same way I might tune out someone in real life. This feature feels like a third person putting up a hand to stop someone finishing their point and I have to ask that they be allowed to finish.

Please remove it altogether. As others have said, the reason I still continue to MN after all these years is because I enjoy reading the longer, and often more thought provoking responses.
If I wanted short and snappy rather than reasoned and with depth, I would use other sites.

Another one here who doesn't like this feature at all. Very annoying and unnecessary; please, if you insist on keeping it, give us an opt-out option as others have suggested. Thank you!

I have just rad a post with 14 lines (in paragraphs, not a wall of text) before the "read more." It expanded to 16 lines. Surely that wasn't long enough to require truncating?

I think it is the regular and long time posters that hate it, I recognise so many of you from long running threads.

In an AIBU thread it doesn't matter if you skim it, or don't read every post. However in the sub forums where posters are having a full conversation it really interrupts the reading.

I am reading every post, and I have the attention span to even read long ones.

@AmeliaPMumsnet It’s an utterly pointless update. It doesn’t enhance anything, in fact as has been evidenced from all the posts here, it’s actually making the user experience worse.
Can you please either get rid of it or make it optional.

No one has asked for this @AmeliaPMumsnet . Not sure why it’s been decided to bring it in as a feature. It’s not necessary and hugely annoying. Please make it optional or rethink having it at all.

I like it. It will teach everyone to be brief.

But sometimes posts don't need to be brief. Some of us are capable of reading long posts.
If you want brief then stick to X or whatever other sites have a character limit.
