What's this 'show more/show less' nonsense for?!

It completely breaks up the flow of a thread.

Do you really think we haven't got the brain power to read a post that's longer than two paragraphs?!

The aim was to make threads, particularly on mobile, easier to scan.

And this, in one sentence, shows just how much Mumsnet has changed and is changing. No longer a place for discussion and debate. The introduction of 'feeling' emojis was a big influence - no longer do people have to bother with actual words - and now posts longer than a short paragraph are deemed too much for people to bother with.

Thank you again for all your feedback on the truncation feature released last week.

We've just released it again with a change based directly on the feedback we received last week. The original cut-off point was too short, so we’ve increased it. This means posts will need to be considerably longer before they’re collapsed.

Long quoted sections will continue to be collapsed, as we hope this will make lengthy posts in quotes easier to scan and read. They can still be expanded and collapsed using ‘See more’ and ‘See less’.

We hope this change is less intrusive while keeping the benefit for particularly long posts and quotes. Please let us know how you find it.

Why is it not optional?
I don't have any need for it, it's pointless and irritating.

Can it at least be optional for premium members?

Its still irritating even with the longer cut off. I can see the use with the quotes. But not on normal posts.

Actually it's more than irritating. I actively hate it.

It's awful - still too short, a pain for those of us that have to make an effort to click, and effectively encourages people not to read whole posts!

Why are you all spending time on something no one wants, while ignoring the more pressing issues you have with moderation?

I've just quickly scanned the posts in site stuff but cannot see any requesting this - perhaps @AmeliaPMumsnet or someone from MNHQ could link to any threads requesting it so those of us that hate it can understand the rationale better?

As PP have said, I dont 'scan', I read.

If others don't read and wish to just blurt their thoughts rather than engaging with debate, most mobiles have the option of a 'jump to end of page' button. Although I wish they wouldn't, because it diminishes the quality of the conversation - I don't understand why you'd want to encourage that.

Repeated clicking is physically harder than scrolling, on both mobile and desktop, and is poor for accessibility. I would imagine it's a nightmare if using a screen reader. Have you tested that?

On most of my regular threads - because I favour long-form discussion and engage most in conversations where that happens - I'm having to click on virtually every post.

Please, at least give us an opt out.

Plus I want people to read the posts, because that is how people have a conversation.

If the goal was less engagement, it's working.
I'm already not bothering to click to read comments (why should I?) and just give up on the threads.

Your own post detailing the new improved cut off point was cut off, clearly it's too short as you'd only written a few paragraphs.

Mumsnet has always had a low tech, slightly crap UI and that is one of its strong points. People want to read and post not click like demented teens on Insta.

I thought I had a glitch on my phone and looked for a thread to explain it - and then see it's an actual thing that MN have introduced as a result of mysterious feedback. I didn't see an posts asking for such feedback - did anyone else?

It's a horrible feature - breaks up the reading flow and forces posters to write soundbites rather than measured, thought out responses. Please get rid of it MN.

So it's back. It's dreadful. Especially on FWR, we have very long posts, and I would hazard a guess that most of us read ALL of it. This is important information for women to be aware of their rights, and the news about efforts to curtail those rights. It now means that posters need to make their entire argument in the first two paragraphs or so. Otherwise, I fear we will miss a lot of information, and posters will miss out a lot of readers. If I were a conspiracist, I might think this was deliberately censoring women's words.

But, I'm not. I understand it's a feature, but, as someone rightly said previously, we aren't scrolling aimlessly because we are bored. We are reading. Please give us the option to disable this feature.
