Racist thread

There is a thread running in AIBU where people are being openly and freely racist. You've already deleted several posts on there so you're aware of it. Why are you allowing it to run?

Also why do you allow racism against travellers on here?

OP posts:

IDK it sounds a bit like White Lives Matter too stuff

And the whole post seems like a long-winded version of 'you can't say anything these days' so won't be paying it much attention

Hmm but I’ve had a very similar all views aired-even the uncomfortable ones email from MN when I complained about their moderation on racism 🤔

Interesting observation Smile

It’s difficult when your whole experience of Travellers is a bad one. We have Travellers regularly popping in and out of our town, and without exception, they’ve all left a whole lot of mess and criminal activity behind. A lot of people on that post were just expressing their own experiences. You can’t state positive ones when you don’t have any. Some were rightly deleted however…

Sparklybutold · 11/08/2025 19:53

JaneJeffer · 11/08/2025 18:47

It's also been co-opted into a narrow victim/oppressor narrative, where racism is only acknowledged if it flows in one direction.
I don’t even understand this sentence. What do you mean?

I’m referring to critical race theory and the white privilege rhetoric.

The problem is that you've had countless positive ones and you just don't know it. We live in every part of the country. Why would you notice normal people being normal? A family of white people going about their daily lives doesn't attract attention does it? You only notice the bad.

"How arrogant would you have to be to never hear things you don’t like?”

We're are not talking about "things we don't like".

We are talking about hate, lies and the whipping up of racism on this site.

‘Hate and lies’ - now I don’t know exactly which parts you are referring too but which is better - they discuss it openly with the hope that they perhaps learn something or they don’t and there thoughts go unchallenged?

Sparklybutold · 11/08/2025 20:06

MiloMinderbinder925 · 11/08/2025 18:58

I think this attitude is disingenuous because most people know what racism is. If you hold a prejudiced view about an ethnicity or race, for example people from this country are predisposed to be rapists, paedophiles, savages, backwards, woman hating, criminals or other sweeping negative generalisations, it's racist.

You can discuss issues in society for example immigration, without making racist and inflammatory comments. I don't want all views aired because I don't want to hear racist bile and I'm glad to hear it's being shut down because it's never positive.

If you're uncertain about what constitutes racism the Declaration on Race and Racial Prejudice should help clarify it for you:
www.unesco.org/en/legal-affairs/declaration-race-and-racial-prejudice

The problem here is there are groups of people who hold views and behaviours that are inconsistent and in complete opposition to ours - to point this out is not racist but stating fact.

PurpleChrayn · 11/08/2025 20:08

Stifling discussion about topics like this is what allows parties like Reform to flourish.

Absolutely Agree. We cannot expect to live in a world where we don’t hear something that we find offensive - it is within this scenario we have a choice, challenge or walk away. But to expect deletion (head can’t find the word!) is unrealistic and is exactly where hatred will flourish. Instead I’m curious about whether there is something about resilience in this scenario - resilience to acknowledge and accept that there are opposing views and that these views have as much of a right as yours.

Ours meaning who exactly?

AWitchCalledMeg · 11/08/2025 20:24

I haven't seen any racism. I what I have seem is a great many threads baying for mumsnet to censor the site of anything that could possibly even be conceived as racism. Where is this obsession coming from? Is it genuine, or AI bots?

No.

Hate allows parties like Reform to flourish. The likes of Farage manipulate that hate via lies and distortions into legitimacy.

Concerned citizens, etc.

Two threads about travellers have been deleted by MNHQ. So have quite a few racist posts. Nothing to do with bots.

No one is baying.

Yep that's toxic stuff. Absolutely nothing good can come out of that.

SkylarFalls · 11/08/2025 20:33

Exchange the traveller description in the OPs recounting of events, with a skin colour. ...

And the thread wouldn't stand.

It just wouldn't.

JaneJeffer · 11/08/2025 20:21

Ours meaning who exactly?

‘Ours’ - I am referring to western values.

but this thread isn’t about actual content of views so I won’t go down this rabbit hole, but the merit of open discussion of contentious, opposing, and yes, sometimes, hateful views.

‘western values’ includes free speech - albeit this very freedom is being compromised deeply at the moment. This thread highlights that.

Are travellers not western then?

The problem is we end up going round and round with actual debate being censored. I think the issue here is the strength of tolerance and resilience when hearing views that challenge ours.

That’s really up to them to decipher. I’m also fairly certain their views would vary from person to person.

This is certainly an option. When someone/their views gets under your skin, sometimes it is best to move on - I know I have. The reasons for this can vary from not having the emotional bandwidth, to not knowing enough about it, not caring, and sometimes feeling fragile for whatever reason. Disengaging is not a sign of weakness but demonstrates self control.
