Racist thread

There is a thread running in AIBU where people are being openly and freely racist. You've already deleted several posts on there so you're aware of it. Why are you allowing it to run?

Also why do you allow racism against travellers on here?

Oh the irony of this poster pushing misinformation on a thread discussing racism and misinformation.

Fair point @C8H10N4O2 I can't say I liked the response to just challenge on thread - it seems to resolve MN of responsibility and doesn't help us much.

And of course, challenging misinformation/disinformation on thread can result in deletions for troll hunting. We are also told not to call out liars, to report them instead.

I am not disputing those were horrifically let down by the absolute failure and corruption of the authorities.

Weaponising the events to smear a good man is in poor taste.

Edited

As is weaponising the events to smear an entire group of people.

It's almost as if there's no actual interest in sorting this problem out. 🧐

PandoraSocks · 11/08/2025 17:14

I reported the lie in that post, which has been deleted when posted previously, I am sure. The reply:

Thanks for reporting this post. However as it's not breaking our Talk Guidelines, we won't delete it on this occasion. We'll continue to keep an eye on things for the time being and please continue to report anything you think we ought to check out.

Yes. Remember the Lorena Bobbitt story went all around the world, and that was pre-internet I think?

That's been going round about the Mafia since the 1940s. Somebody thinks that no one's ever read a book or watched a TV programme about them. I've also heard it shortly after each time it's been wheeled out onscreen about the IRA, Yardies, the Yakuza and Muslims. All from idiots, obviously.

Anyhow, I think the official response is woefully inadequate and unacceptable. It was a clear 'I'm not being racialist [sic], but...' and now we're getting a 'It's free speech, you know' response.

And those self same Police also raped and abused the same children. As though they weren't any different from other predatory males.

I have just reported that post and said I'll send a link to Gordon Brown to see if he wants to take it further. I'm absolutely fed up seeing people like Gordon Brown - a man of immense integrity who has contributed greatly to public life - being maligned with lies and fabrications.

PhilippaGeorgiou · 11/08/2025 17:28

So a lie stands, but calling someone an idiot is deleted. I return to my earlier comments. It is almost as if MNHQ doesn't want the misinformation, lies and racism (etc.,etc) to stop because they want the clicks. Hmmm.

I totally agree. Gordon Brown is a very decent man.

This actually made me laugh out loud! I have grown up with and worked with the Traveller/gypsy community extensively. They are among the most racist people ive ever met and they are very very open about it!

I was called a bigot and a moral coward by the infamous hate spamming poster. That was allowed to stand.

Yeah right.

Every community has its racists. It still doesn't mean it is OK to be racist about that community as a whole.

So you're saying the government control what the police can and can't investigate?

Disgusting.

I think everyone should adopt my new response. I might answer once. Then it simply becomes "I see you". Makes for a really boring one sided debate for them. If they want to spew hatred in a void, everyone else can see them too.

Anyone recommend a site where moderators are decent and debate is informed? I doubt I'll last much longer here. Too much hatred.

When we talk about racism, at its core it involves making assumptions about a group of people and projecting those assumptions onto everyone within that group. But the leap from making a general observation to being labelled racist is not always straightforward—especially when cultural norms and behaviours genuinely differ between groups.
There are communities whose attitudes and behaviours may clash with those of others, and sometimes observations about these differences are dismissed as racist without proper consideration. So the question is: when does a generalisation or critique cross the line into racism?

It seems to me that the term “racism” has become heavily loaded. These days, expressing an opinion—even one that might offend someone—is often immediately branded as racist, regardless of whether it’s factually wrong or rooted in malice. I’ve noticed the word being thrown around so frequently that it’s starting to lose its impact. It’s also been co-opted into a narrow victim/oppressor narrative, where racism is only acknowledged if it flows in one direction.

In my own experience, I’ve seen how certain opinions are quickly shut down, and I find that deeply concerning. Personally, I’d much rather see all views aired—even the uncomfortable ones—so that we can have open, honest discussions. As Ricky Gervais once said, “How arrogant would you have to be to never hear things you don’t like?” I think he’s spot on. We don’t have to agree with everything, but silencing differing perspectives only stifles meaningful conversation.

We're are not talking about "things we don't like".

We are talking about hate, lies and the whipping up of racism on this site.

I think this attitude is disingenuous because most people know what racism is. If you hold a prejudiced view about an ethnicity or race, for example people from this country are predisposed to be rapists, paedophiles, savages, backwards, woman hating, criminals or other sweeping negative generalisations, it's racist.

You can discuss issues in society for example immigration, without making racist and inflammatory comments. I don't want all views aired because I don't want to hear racist bile and I'm glad to hear it's being shut down because it's never positive.

If you're uncertain about what constitutes racism the Declaration on Race and Racial Prejudice should help clarify it for you:

IDK it sounds a bit like White Lives Matter too stuff

And the whole post seems like a long-winded version of 'you can't say anything these days' so won't be paying it much attention
