Is it just my PC or is Mumsnet slower lately?

Pages are taking ages to load/refresh....

I may end up internet shopping while I'm waiting and will have to ask Mnet to fit the bill for any Jimmy Choos I may order.....

ooh! I can help you I think! IMO it's those blinking ads slowing down the pages- a lot of them are flash movies so when you load a page you're waiting for the ads to load which takes the time. A nice dad on here pointed me in the direction of an ad blocker which has really helped me, but it's a mozilla firefox thing so if you're using internet explorer I can't help after all!!!

look here for links

Twinklemegan · 17/05/2008 22:10

I still use the classic view and it's fine. And I'm on dial-up.

LIZS · 18/05/2008 15:43

me too today

BecauseImWorthIt · 18/05/2008 15:46

Really slow here, and if I click on 'topic list' nothing happens at all!

Heated · 18/05/2008 15:50

It's gawful

MrsWeasley · 18/05/2008 15:50

mine is really slow today I am playing 2 games of bubblets whilst waiting for the page to refresh.

Lubyloo · 18/05/2008 15:50

Very slow for me today. It keeps loading up blank pages and I have to refresh several times to see the page.

Carmenere · 18/05/2008 15:51

Mine too is really crap today and it is the ads as I get the banner ad on top and then a blank screen below for about a minute If I wasn't such a hardened addict I might lose paitence.....

BecauseImWorthIt · 18/05/2008 15:52

topic list working again

southeastastra · 18/05/2008 16:01

get firefox, then instal and ad blocker, slow for me on ie for ages now.

barnstaple · 18/05/2008 16:12

Mine's very slow atm, though I think it's partly to do with my rubbish wireless card which is only managing to give me 18Mbps right now but has never managed more than 54Mbps (dh is getting up to 100Mbps on the other side of the room, but he's not wireless). I use firefox and will try this ad blocker, see what happens.

barnstaple · 18/05/2008 16:16

Ooh I think my laptop heard me complaining - it's gone up to 24Mbps!

janeite · 18/05/2008 16:19

It's awful today - never known it so bad.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/05/2008 16:23

My speed massively improved (I mean absolutely hugely) when I adblocked doubleclick, wunderloop and google-analytics. Doubleclick was the main problem, it was awful. I didn't like doing because the revenue must be important for running MN but it was bad enough that I did almost give up MN.

lol I just spotted this thread and it's taken the best part of five minutes to open it so a resounding 'yes'!

I'm on Mozilla Firefox on a Mac and I'm sure it's the ads. I've tried an adblocker but, tbh, it only seemed to get worse. Will try the doubleclick thing now. Thanx.

bratnav · 18/05/2008 16:59

Oh bliss, the ads are all gone, soooo much quicker

evenhope · 18/05/2008 17:32

So pleased to (finally) read this thread. Have had to refresh 3 times and nothing would open. Have now followed the instructions to block the ads and it is working again (phew!)

SaintGeorge · 18/05/2008 17:33

I'm on Mozilla and (touch wood) so far no problems.

barnstaple · 18/05/2008 17:37

I've done both the addons mentioned in yetihead's linked thread and it's much much quicker - this with a connection speed down to 11Mbps!

Thanks everyone.[emoticon for happy]

southeastastra · 18/05/2008 17:42

i installed this on firefox to block ads.

really though i don't know what's happening, it's been bad for me for months (on ie)

MrsMuddle · 18/05/2008 18:32

How do you get rid of them without installing Firefox? It's a work laptop, so don't want to install anything. I'm about to give up with MN - I'm refreshing each page about three times before I see anything. So slow...
