Shouldn’t the clap and the thumbs up be the other way around?

Annoys me that the clap reaction is for ‘thanks’. Who claps to say thank you?? I more imagine people clapping in agreement a la Question Time / Rikki Lake. And then the thumbs up for ‘thanks’ like someone has answered your question on WhatsApp or whatever.

Just a minor but frequent gripe. Surely lots of people at MNHQ agree with me 😂

I agree. It's bonkers that it is that way. Who thought it up? Or rather didn't think...

But I can't hover on my phone touchscreen 😭

I just put my finger on the relevant email and rest it there, instead of doing a quick tap to select it.

Omg it works. Thank you!

Glad it worked. And obviously, I meant emoji not email!😂

Petition for MNHQ to immediately replace the current emojis with Flowers Grin Confused Angry Biscuit and of course Gin

You missed the 🖕🏼

Whereas I would see it as 'sending love'.

God, none of us know how to use these emojis do we? Absolute mess!

It was much better when we just used actual words!!

In my mind a thumbs up is a “like”. More than”agree”. Sometimes that might be interchangeable but sometimes it’s not.

but not sure I’d use clap for thanks or for like. A clap is a “well done”.

I don’t know what icon would be good for thanks. I don’t think a thumbs up.

🙏🏻 is what my iPad keyboard suggests for thanks or 🤩

That looks like praying, not thanks!!

GarlicStyle · 28/02/2025 16:42

I agree with OP!

If extra emojis are on the table - I want a 'Wow' and a 'Care', please - you know the Facebook 'kind heart' one? I keep sending hearts to posters of sad stories, hoping they'll know I mean I feel for them, not that I'm loving their distress!

longtompot · 28/02/2025 16:45

I agree @pearbottomjeans and it makes it difficult to know which one to press sometimes.

Echobowels · 28/02/2025 16:48

I agree - it's really annoying as it is!

It really does. Friend of mine uses it in texts to me and I thought she was praying for me for ages. I mean she might be 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

I couldn’t disagree with this more! Of COURSE thumbs up is for agree! (The only change I’d accept is it could be a 👌🏻) And of COURSE clapping is thank you! We didn’t all stand on our doorsteps thumbs-upping NHS workers in the pandemic did we?

God. I’ve not been so furious about something so inconsequential on the internet since Twitter changed its star favourite to a heart. Outrageous.

Nor do audiences such as in my OP sit there thumbs-up-ing 😂

I’m assuming/hoping your rage is semi-lighthearted, like the rest of this thread. Hope so as this seems to be an uprising and a change is gonna come!

Semi-lighthearted. Semi! Fully committed to my being on the right side of history versus your egregiously bad hot take but I’m not going to burn down the internet over it. I shall consider my next move carefully. Perhaps I will quote posters and simply ADD a clapping emoji and a clarifying comment to say it is a thank you clap not an agreement clap. Won’t be annoying at all!

I think we need a flow chart and various degrees of emotion assigned to multiple emojis so we’re all on the same page. This is where online communication falls down, lack of nuance.

I like how some posters are like 'I want more care and flowers emojis' and others are like 'I want more ways to tell a poster they're talking shit'. I suspect there are no overlaps between the two groups!

saraclara · 28/02/2025 22:19

I don't think any negative emojis, including the biscuit, should be used with the present system.

If it's public, it's kind of okay. Because you know that others are seeing it too, and will make their own judgment about the person being unpleasant. But if you're the only person who sees it (and you probably even got an email that pointed you to it) I think it'd be hurtful and you'd feel much more vulnerable and unsupported.
