Shouldn’t the clap and the thumbs up be the other way around?

pearbottomjeans · 28/02/2025 11:50

Annoys me that the clap reaction is for ‘thanks’. Who claps to say thank you?? I more imagine people clapping in agreement a la Question Time / Rikki Lake. And then the thumbs up for ‘thanks’ like someone has answered your question on WhatsApp or whatever.

Just a minor but frequent gripe. Surely lots of people at MNHQ agree with me 😂

Would the poo emoji - for when you disbelieve the veracity or good faith of the poster - count as troll-hunting?

Could also be a picture of Jay from the Inbetweeners, or Jimmy Hill Grin

noblegiraffe · 28/02/2025 12:23

Everyone saying 'I want a poo emoji' is thinking about them casually flinging it at other posters.

Can you imagine how devastating to your ego it would be to discover that your (self-imagined) carefully crafted gems of wisdom that you sprinkle over the site are actually as welcome as Ebola?

I agree with the OP. 👏

I like the idea of a "wow" button.

However, above all, I really want a "disagree" option. Or a WTF option would do it.

No to disagree or wtf buttons
If you feel that strongly say it in public.
Otherwise it would be used to bully people
Some people have said that posters are already using the buttons to bully.

As for emoji

👍= agree or good job so thanks
Hand clap is a bit iffy
⭐️🌟 so I vote for the your a star for thank you

Comedycook · 28/02/2025 12:26

I'd quite like a shocked face emoji

There's clearly dissent and/or confusion about what the emoji mean, as I've had a lot of mixed ones: i.e. I post something that (I think) is amusing or jokey, and might get at least one of each kind of response emoji (a full house?!).

Yep, I tend to get thumbs up and clapping on the same posts. I think everyone's a bit confused about how they should be used.

I wasn't in agreement with being able to just like a post, I think there was a lot to be said for people having to use their words, but it's gone that way now so I think they need to be more options

I'd like a couple that represent

You have to be fucking joking

Oh come on now

And a few other, even less civilised comments!!

Along with some nice ones to say

That's shit, I hope it gets better

I'm really sorry to hear that

etc

Maybe a "Chapeau!" option for an outstandingly excellent post - with somebody raising their hat aloft?!

Nooooo the Chapeau trend really really grinds my gears!!

Oh, I'm not afraid of saying when I disagree. But sometimes, when posters are really just posting a load of shit, I just can't be arsed.

I know that MN is unlikely to give us a WTF button, but it doesn't stop me wanting one.

Absolutely - it would be abused and frequently not come across in the jokey way that it was intended.

Or indeed not actually be intended as jokey.

Darkclothes · 28/02/2025 12:40

Completely agree OP! I often have to double check which one means what.

I'd also like a thumbs down option. Considering only the poster can view it, it would be handy if I don't agree with their comment.

saraclara · 28/02/2025 12:41

I end up pressing the wrong emoji nearly every time, because of this. I'm glad someone brought it up.

It wouldn't bother me in the slightest. I'm self aware enough to know already that people will disagree with me on some topics, and my ego doesn't depend on the approval of random strangers.

I don't really see the difference between getting a load of WTF emojis in response to a particular post and a resounding YABU vote. Lots of OPs already get their arses handed to them on a plate.

saraclara · 28/02/2025 12:47

Thumbs up for agreeing
Star to express appreciation for a really articulate and intelligent post
And we need a care emoji.

The difference there is you can see the names of people who put emojis on your post and you can't see those who vote against you so it feels less personal/targeted, I think.

There have already been complaints about posters passive-aggressively putting 'laugh' emojis on serious posts from posters they don't like. You could really piss someone off by following them around the site putting poo on all their posts.

scalt · 28/02/2025 12:49

It must be a hangover from that utter nonsense when clapping meant “thank you NHS”.

For me, there’s not a lot of difference between any of them: they’re just four different “like” symbols. I don’t mind the “laugh” one, and I feel honoured when someone uses it with me.

Darkclothes · 28/02/2025 12:57

As I said up thread, I'd like a thumbs down option. If people are worried about seeing which posters have given a thumbs down/thumbs up etc- why not just remove that option to see who sent it @MNHQ?

What is the purpose of being able to track who gave what emoji?

I have the same person that seems to like every, single post I've ever made! I only know if I open the daily update thing I get emailed. TBH, its a bit weird and I'd prefer the emojis were anonymous.

noblegiraffe · 28/02/2025 13:00

If the emojis were anonymous it would be even easier to follow a poster around putting poo on everything they write without the poster being able to call them out for it.

The problem with emojis is that they are specifically targeted at that poster and that poster alone, as they are the only person who can see them. Nice when it's positive, not so nice when it's not.

I would actually find it quite interesting to see who had disagreed with me.

Perhaps we could give people the option of hiding all reactions if they're of a sensitive nature and don't want to see them?

It's wishful thinking anyway, as MN are not going to give us a WTF button, no matter how much some of us would like it. So those who don't like the idea need not worry.

If you know me, you'll know I'm always up for a ruck (and if I was of a sensitive nature I'd have never made it through covid on here!) but I think I would find it immensely frustrating to have someone lazily click 'disagree' without having to give any reason, and without me being able to have it out with them because I'm the only person who can see it.

Yeah, I am well aware that you're not afraid of a debate Wink, and I get that it could be frustrating not to be able to have it out with people. And in general, I do agree that people should take the trouble to engage and explain why they disagree.

But there are some posts - and frankly some posters - that simply don't warrant that level of effort. There are times when I just want to be able to register my disagreement without having to explain to someone who is clearly posting with a particular agenda without any intention of engaging in proper discussion or debate. And I think there would be value in some posters seeing that a large number of people reject what they're saying even if they don't want to get into a discussion about it.

In any case, I'm a realist and I don't think it's ever going to happen. Sadly.

I agree tbh and I almost mentioned having a disagree button in my OP. But I think it's 'not in the spirit of the site' (although if you ask me, MN is built on bunfights).
