Shouldn’t the clap and the thumbs up be the other way around?

pearbottomjeans · 28/02/2025 11:50

Annoys me that the clap reaction is for ‘thanks’. Who claps to say thank you?? I more imagine people clapping in agreement a la Question Time / Rikki Lake. And then the thumbs up for ‘thanks’ like someone has answered your question on WhatsApp or whatever.

Just a minor but frequent gripe. Surely lots of people at MNHQ agree with me 😂

These are perfect

I can already see a text label over each emoji if I hover over them?

Oh, I'm on the mobile site so I can't hover. Yes, that sounds more sensible.

The clap symbol for me is "well said". Have used it several times recently, as no better option available, even though it is worded "thanks". To me, 'I agree' would be a tick or handshake symbol. The thumb up, I would generally think of as a more casual 'okay' or 'that's good'.

I agree with this.

An "I don't agree" button would also be good.

WorriedRelative · 28/02/2025 14:27

I agree that the thumbs up and applause seem the wrong way round.

I think a care/sympathy reaction would be good, just to show support where you have nothing to add or the discussion has moved on.

Isn't that what the ❤️ is for?

I'm also on the mobile site so maybe it depends on the browser?

That's what I thought.

Jabtastic · 28/02/2025 14:31

I agree 100% please switch them around! I don't know why they were put this way to start with it makes no sense!

pelargoniums · 28/02/2025 14:33

I couldn’t disagree with this more! Of COURSE thumbs up is for agree! (The only change I’d accept is it could be a 👌🏻) And of COURSE clapping is thank you! We didn’t all stand on our doorsteps thumbs-upping NHS workers in the pandemic did we?

God. I’ve not been so furious about something so inconsequential on the internet since Twitter changed its star favourite to a heart. Outrageous.

I would be totally on board with that. I'm a fan of the old MN emojis.

Choccyp1g · 28/02/2025 14:38

I agree OP.
I suspect this is why language developed; because facial expressions and hand gestures are not clear enough.

noblegiraffe · 28/02/2025 14:40

I like Biscuit as 'you ain't worth it'. Not sure there's a similar, quite so scathingly dismissive emoji anywhere else.

SwedishEdith · 28/02/2025 14:43

I want a skeptical 🤨 🤔 fact. I dish out a 👏 if I really agree/good post and a thumbs 👍 if I agree more mildly or to acknowledge a response. Sometimes throw in a heart 💗 and a laugh 😂 as well. Definitely need some less positive ones though. Maybe a 😶. Ha ha.

noblegiraffe · 28/02/2025 14:43

I think I would like the biscuit emoji to be added, but to be public, and only to be available to long-standing MNetters.

I'm left handed and have accidentally 'reacted' to posts while scrolling with my left thumb.

You don't need to leave an emoji on there if you clicked in error! You just click it again and it disappears!

I usually don't notice I've done it unless I scroll through the thread again and notice a react has been left.

Like, I scroll, react buttons appear, I keep scrolling on past, but sometimes doing that selects one. It doesn't really matter, but I hope I don't accidentally leave a laugh react and get banned.

When you hover over the heart it says “love” so I wouldn’t want to use it as a caring type emoji. If someone’s cat has died I’m not going to love their post. For me the heart is if I really, really like what they’re saying.

Whereas I would see it as 'sending love'.

God, none of us know how to use these emojis do we? Absolute mess!

It’s a minefield for sure. I see your point about sending love but someone else could misinterpret that and think why do you love the fact they’re having a shit time. Aggghhhh. 🙈😁

MoralOrLegal · 28/02/2025 15:15

I always get them confused and always have to hover for the text. Agree that we should have a Biscuit reaction!

I think anyone trying to be unpleasant would use the laughing emoji. The heart would be understood as sympathetic, whatever the label.

whydear · 28/02/2025 15:31

I'd like the reactions and the voting feature in the app!!

Yeah, I’ve seen threads (::cough the royals board cough::) where posters have done a deliberate laughing reaction to every single one of a single user’s posts as an invisible means of driving people off the thread. Would love a means of reporting misuse of the reaction button tbh!

one pass-agg laugh is reasonable; when it’s every single post on a thread it’s spiteful.

MNHQ have said if this happens you should report your own posts so they can deal with the poster.
