Shouldn’t the clap and the thumbs up be the other way around?

pearbottomjeans · 28/02/2025 11:50

Annoys me that the clap reaction is for ‘thanks’. Who claps to say thank you?? I more imagine people clapping in agreement a la Question Time / Rikki Lake. And then the thumbs up for ‘thanks’ like someone has answered your question on WhatsApp or whatever.

Just a minor but frequent gripe. Surely lots of people at MNHQ agree with me 😂

Yeah, I am well aware that you're not afraid of a debate Wink, and I get that it could be frustrating not to be able to have it out with people. And in general, I do agree that people should take the trouble to engage and explain why they disagree.

But there are some posts - and frankly some posters - that simply don't warrant that level of effort. There are times when I just want to be able to register my disagreement without having to explain to someone who is clearly posting with a particular agenda without any intention of engaging in proper discussion or debate. And I think there would be value in some posters seeing that a large number of people reject what they're saying even if they don't want to get into a discussion about it.

In any case, I'm a realist and I don't think it's ever going to happen. Sadly.

💩

(No offence @MrsBennetsPoorNerves , just trying it out). How did that make you feel, your lovely reasoned post being so abruptly dismissed?

I think it would wind people up even more than MN needs right now!

Darkclothes · 28/02/2025 13:30

@noblegiraffe Out of interest, is the poo emoji only available to paying members?

noblegiraffe · 28/02/2025 13:32

Grin I'm not a paying member, it's just from my normal emoji keyboard.

Nooooo the Chapeau trend really really grinds my gears!!

I seem to have thankfully missed this, but people writing or saying chefs kiss makes me feel the same way!

I agree tbh and I almost mentioned having a disagree button in my OP. But I think it's 'not in the spirit of the site' (although if you ask me, MN is built on bunfights).

Public bun fights.

Proper Public Pugilism Please!!

No offence taken...I found it funny!😂

Though poo is a bit juvenile for my taste. I would prefer something a but edgier!

Perhaps a compromise might be to offer the traditional MN biscuit?

pearbottomjeans · 28/02/2025 13:51

God why on earth is there not a biscuit reaction? Seems an obvious initial choice!

YES.

MrsMitford3 · 28/02/2025 13:54

Completely agree.

They are very counter-intuitive.

Would be lovely to see them swapped!

OriginalUsername2 · 28/02/2025 13:54

Clapping for thanks has felt wrong to me too! Clapping should be “agreed”.

SoManyTeeth · 28/02/2025 13:54

Surely the "thanks" symbol on MN is traditionally 💐? Typing [ thanks ] (without spaces) has produced Thanks for as long as I remember.

Edit: and yes, I find the symbols for "thanks" and "agree" reactions confusing, and have to double-check every time I want to use one of them.

That is very true. Would have been a better option than the applause!

CerealPosterHere · 28/02/2025 13:59

In my mind a thumbs up is a “like”. More than”agree”. Sometimes that might be interchangeable but sometimes it’s not.

but not sure I’d use clap for thanks or for like. A clap is a “well done”.

I don’t know what icon would be good for thanks. I don’t think a thumbs up.

🙏🏻 is what my iPad keyboard suggests for thanks or 🤩

Maybe a "Chapeau!" option for an outstandingly excellent post - with somebody raising their hat aloft?!

Good one!

PragmaticIsh · 28/02/2025 14:00

Completely agree, confuses me every time.

SoManyTeeth · 28/02/2025 14:06

TBH I'd be perfectly happy with a little text label above each emoji when you click the react button, like "THX~AGR~LUV~HA", just to remind me which one is which, but suspect that wouldn't mesh with modern design principles Grin

Tarantella6 · 28/02/2025 14:08

I've never noticed the words. I only seem to be able to see pictures. So we could all be using them differently!

I don't use the clapping in case the person thinks I'm being sarcastic.

I can already see a text label over each emoji if I hover over them?

maudelovesharold · 28/02/2025 14:15

Can I just say how much I dislike the current ‘funny’ emoji? The original MN grin was so much better!

Garlicgarlicgarlic · 28/02/2025 14:19

I'm left handed and have accidentally 'reacted' to posts while scrolling with my left thumb.

Doggymummar · 28/02/2025 14:20

I think the same as you, I often have to correct myself when using them.

noblegiraffe · 28/02/2025 14:20

Petition for MNHQ to immediately replace the current emojis with Flowers Grin Confused Angry Biscuit and of course Gin
