Muslim Board

Hi @mnhq is it possible to please request a Muslim Board on here, a safe space for Muslims to have to speak freely about things that matter and should be discussed? Similar to that of the Jewish board.

You do know nobody would make you post on a Muslim Mumsnetters board?

Luckily you wont need to post on the new board if its created, or even read the threads if you dont want to

In fact it may mean the threads about Islam end up more in one place, which means you wont need to accidentally find yourself talking about Muslim men on threads about Eid any more...

So your issue isn’t the religion but the way South Asians live their lives…ok then. Makes complete sense.

Suddenarabia · 04/04/2024 21:46

I guess the difference is there are around 7million Muslims in the UK which doesn’t really make them a massive minority.

Jewish people - 270,000

Suddenarabia · 04/04/2024 21:49

Hopefully Muslim members will be able to post on it without facing the quite frankly shitty attitudes from some people

but MN is pretty much characterised by shitty attitudes from people. Why do some groups - whoever they are - need to be protected or segregated. I think there should be interest based groups but religion based is the wrong way to move for MN - and the country in general

How would a Muslim board be a problem, though?

Just like other boards, people could choose whether or not to visit it, post on it, etc. If you prefer not to read things about Muslims, it could even be helpful for you because you might be less likely to come across threads chatting about things you don't want to read.

therealcookiemonster · 04/04/2024 21:55

100% needed.

EG94 · 04/04/2024 22:01

I’d love it! Non Muslim but partner Muslim. We have very in depth and interesting debates but would be good to see and understand perspectives other than his. I have a lot of questions 😊

TrickyBiscuits · 04/04/2024 22:02

If Muslim posters would like a board surely they should be able to have one.

Although I’m surprised there’s any Muslim women left on here, it’s become so vile recently.

anotherlevel · 04/04/2024 22:09

I've contacted MN via the report button on my OP about an update and whether we can have a board but I haven't heard anything back yet. How long do they normally take to reply to threads on this board and email?

Funny because they delete comments pretty bloody sharpish 😂😂

WhatsUnderneathTheClothesBrookeDavis · 04/04/2024 22:11

I think this is a great idea. There’s always so much Islamophobia whenever a thread around it comes up and it’s so disheartening to see in this day and age. I also agree with it not appearing in active as I don’t think some people will bother to look at the board it’s under and offer up thinly veiled racist comments.

anotherlevel · 04/04/2024 22:13

@EG94 yes just like the one I reported on here!

OnBoardTheHeartOfGold · 04/04/2024 22:13

most of the time no one would know who's Muslim here. They're pretty normal and contribute to many discussions, not just about religion.
It would be good to have a space for them to discuss things that affect them.

EasterIssland · 04/04/2024 22:13

@anotherlevel they’ve replied in a thread that was opened today in site stuff. So they should have seen this thread as well

on a similar vein I think it is absolutely bloody criminal that women vote these days. my great great grandmother's didn't vote and thT was good enough for them. we should just stick to all our ancestral practises. especially those from South Asia, definitely not a place known for ingrained misogyny. let's forget all about burning women(often actually little girls) on the funeral pyres of their dead husbands, casting women out of their villages when they are on their periods (still happening to this day), treating widows like they are animals, ridiculous amounts of gang rapes happening all the time, women of Lower castes being abused endlessly, I could carry on... I have lived in South Asia and know all about the disgusting misogynistic, toxic culture. but no, @LampShadeTaj 's problem is with her friends wearing headscarves. have you actually lived in south asia @LampShadeTaj ?
I mean you don't have to hang out with muslims/agree with their practises or even like them so why not find some new friends. because you are definitely not friends with these ladies who you clearly despise.

MrsTerryPratchett · 03/04/2024 15:24

Does everyone always have to be so suspicious of each other's motives? Muslim and Jewish people both suffer discrimination, both may have things they would like to discuss off the (frankly sometimes psychotic) main boards, both can share concerns and celebrations on their boards.

It's nice if you want it to be.

So we're psychotic and islamaphobic? That makes a lot of sense. You insult people and that's OK, but if we dare say any hurty words, we're psychotic?

Kasperber · 04/04/2024 22:39

The Muslim community is a lot bigger than the Jewish community. But that doesn’t mean a board for Muslim members isn’t something that wouldnt be very useful and supportive and interesting those who post on it.

Both our communities are up against it in terms of racism, stereotyping and judging. I’m an Orthodox Jew but atheist and have found the new board we have very comforting, supportive and helpful, since 7th October when I’ve felt really unsafe and scared. I hope you get a board OP. Our communities are both having a particularly tough time of it.

anotherlevel · 04/04/2024 22:45

Thank you @Kasperber :)

Seeing the few posters disturbingly trying to stir up anti-Muslim sentiment here is depressing but ultimately supports the OP’s cause. And it’s heartening to see the majority of supportive posters too. 😀

BIWI · 04/04/2024 23:04

I would definitely support this request. And I'm amazed that it's taken so long for MNHQ to bother to respond to this - despite it being posted in Site Stuff. Hmm
