Muslim Board

Hi @mnhq is it possible to please request a Muslim Board on here, a safe space for Muslims to have to speak freely about things that matter and should be discussed? Similar to that of the Jewish board.

I've generally found that ignoring negativity is the quickest way to make it go away.

oh good, you are back. was getting worried about you there. glad you are back commenting on a topic that you have absolutely no investment in

well I use this site as much as anyone else and would like it to be inclusive and supportive of everyone.

you’re right in that I don’t believe there should be lots of specific religion boards, whatever ones they are. However, if people want a space to discuss cultural religious topics could there be Religious Culture board which is inclusive of all religions and where people know they can go to discuss and find likeminded people?

Not all religions have the same culture - I thought that would be obvious, but clearly not…

Hopefully MNHQ will be working on this board and launch it in time for Eid!

Actually it's been really positive! A couple of the dads in particular have been really respectful. DC pulled my hijab off in the pool the other week and the only dad present, without saying anything, moved round so he was obscuring me from the view of the other male swimmers while I fixed it!

that's really good to hear Mash'Allah.

@Suddenarabia okay bloody hell, we ALL get your opinion - you couldn't make it any clearer you don't support a Muslim board, I honestly feel you are stirring here.

@therealcookiemonster, it was anti climatic actually! No one seemed to give me a second glance Grin. In following visits some women actually complimented me and it was interesting that quite a few said they wished they could do it too. I still get comments all the time in different settings, and every single one has been positive.

Interested to hear your experience @Scirocco. Do you feel too hot if you're covered?

@ShoesShoesShoesAndMaybeMoreShoes

I suppose it depends on the context as to how hot I feel, but I do notice people around me who don't cover as much saying how hot they feel when I'm not feeling particularly affected.

In general hot weather, a loose flowing dress or tunic top often feels cooler to me than a more fitted outfit. Most of the things I wear aren't specifically Muslim or from a specific culture - today, for example, I'm wearing straight leg jeans, a longer length top, and a longline open cardigan, much like a lot of people.

Pre-DC I used to go jogging several times a week, and found sports hijabs a real pain at times because of the fabric. I tried a few until I found options that didn't leave me feeling too hot. These days, most of my exercise is either walking (love hill-walking) or my exercise bike/fitness videos at home so I don't need a specific hijab for those. I'll find a link to something similar to what I wear swimming - I also wear a conventional swimming costume underneath because DC can cause wardrobe malfunctions...

Oh @Scirocco thanks for that - now I really really want to buy this Grin

I'm also a fan of Zanzea which I think a lot of people choose for modesty reasons, I just like their clothes anyway.

I like swimming mainly for the hydrotherapy pool/steam rooms etc and obviously they're very warm with just a "normal" swimming costume so wondered how that would feel with more covering.

GoodOldEmmaNess · 07/04/2024 14:03

@ShoesShoesShoesAndMaybeMoreShoes Thanks very much for the mention of Deresina. And bloody good for you for embracing the bald. I wish I could. I have seen one or two women doing this and I just think (1) they look fine - what's the big deal EmmaNess? and (2) I want to go up and hug them.
Unfortunately, speaking as we were of potatoes, I feel blessed with such a potato-like head that I'm not sure I could summon up the courage to embrace the bald.
Scirocco I'm so glad you have had a positive experience in the pool. How sweet of that man.

that’s kind of the whole point. Understanding each other not segregation

this here is why separate boards aren’t always such a good idea. If everyone ‘stays in their lane’ we don’t get closer together as humans.

When I expressed a concern not to be intrusive by going into Muslim or Jewish boards, it wasn't about 'staying in my lane'. It was more to do with the way in which I have seen threads get disrupted a bit when people from outside of a thread-community (to coin a phrase) come in and (sometimes in a well meaning way but sometimes in a virtue-signalling way) start to ask questions.
It means the people in the thread get a bit side-tracked by politely explaining things to someone uninformed. But I guess that with a whole board (rather than a standalone thread, the dynamics would be a bit different. You wouldn't need to trample into an already ongoing conversation - you could start your own.
I might still feel a little reluctant to post there (despite a couple of people upthread kindly saying how welcome anyone would be) but I certainly wouldn't experience that reluctance as 'staying in my lane'. It would just be a combination of basic courtesy and my trademark social anxietyGrin
I actually think that boards dedicated to a particular faith community could be a lovely location for conversations between different faiths. Sometimes it seems like faith-observing people from different religions have such a lot in common and such a lot to bring to one another

I appreciate the irony of saying this given I asked a question up thread which posters very kindly answered but not everything has to be a learnjng experience. Sometimes posters with a specific experience just want to talk to people who understand without having to explain to other people who don't share their culture. It's not the job of a Muslim poster (or indeed any other poster on a particular 'group') to have to educate non-Muslims.

How is everyone's Sunday? We're finally sorted for Eid outfits and it feels like such a load off. My mum bought me shalwaar kameez but she must think I'm slimmer than I actually am so I've just exchanged for a bigger size 😳 Now to think about the menu....

exactly.

I don't mean to brag but I can genuinely make a small baby chicken last a whole week for myself (family of 1) ... as long as I add sufficient amounts of steak, pizza, battered fish etc to the repetoire

It must be such a relief to have it all sorted.

Oh that reminds me I still have to wrap gifts up for the kids. How many do you all get your DCs? I've gone for 4 each but I don't know if that's too many or not enough lol.

I'm preparing an order so Eid cleaning has been delayed but I've got my husband on it. It's not going to be the same as it's not my way lol.
As for Eid clothes, well I have an outfit planned but it's cream and my period is due so might have to re evaluate this decision now. I've never been able to wear Asian clothes since having kids, my figure doesn't do it any justice anymore.

Oh no. I'm working on Tuesday. Got Wed to Friday off but haven't anyone to cover on Tuesday so I have to go in...

Ok. Quick change of plan...

DH will need to take DC to Eid prayer and do present opening and taking things to friends, we can do most of the food prep the night before, then DH and DC can still have Eid dinner and I can have some when I get home. Then we can do our Eid day stuff the next day. DC's 2, they won't realise iA.

Just need to break it to DH.

@Scirocco I might be wrong though so don't stress and of course it depends when you started Ramadhan too x

But even if Eid is on Tuesday, there's nothing wrong with celebrating on Wednesday too and as you say DC won't have a clue lol x
