Muslim Board

Hi @mnhq is it possible to please request a Muslim Board on here, a safe space for Muslims to have to speak freely about things that matter and should be discussed? Similar to that of the Jewish board.

When the Muslim board is set up, would non-Muslims (like me) be welcome to ask respectful questions (such as the musical instrument one)?

Absolutely!

Everyone's welcome!

There can be different views, and it's entirely possible that a child could have parents with different views from each other... On a board with a higher proportion of posters from Muslim backgrounds, people might feel safer to discuss the complexities, while if it were posted on, say, the AIBU, the majority of the thread would probably be taken up with explanations and the OP being attacked for either having concerns/questions or for being part of a faith and culture where some people have concerns/questions.

have actually seen this exact thing happen and then the thread was taken down due to how intense the islamophobia was

@TheShellBeach in the meantime if you wanted to ask anything at all you can ask here or head over to the AMA I started a while back https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/AMA/4818978-im-a-practising-muslim-ask-me-anything

I still respond to it and a lot of common questions are already answered xx

As a Jew I totally support the calls for a Muslim board. I do understand people have concerns about "safe space/echo chamber/segregation" but I think a specific board is about commonalities for posters and not division.

It's like the Litter Tray and the Doghouse (not that I am equating religion with pets!) Specific interests/cultures/disabilities can all be catered in separate topics for where people can talk to others with similar background/knowledge. AIBU shows that threads so easily turn into Fight Club when posters with lack of knowledge barge in and derail. I was here when AIBU was set up as I'm such an old timer Smile but quite frankly now I wish it would fuck off as it's taking all the traffic eg I have a health issue, a health board query gets three replies, an AIBU thread gets tonnes and half the posters don't know what the fuck they're talking about yet dispense useless advice. Dedicated topics are great but under utilised and usage should be encouraged.

Anyway. I may start a Chat thread about food from different cultures - celebratory/traditional/favourites etc, hopefully it will as lovely as all the recipes etc upthread. I'm TeamPotatoes - for everything! Seriously though apart from the food, the friendliness and sharing and harmony was heart warming. Anyone think a dedicated thread would be good?

Also, I'm sorry I can't see amongst the posts which poster wanted hair covering recommendations - I have hair loss and like Deresina, especially their soft caps for sleeping. It makes me smile that my local pool used to ask me to wear a swim hat even though I was bald Grin

Thank you. I can't link on app but there was also an AMA about Orthodox Judaism - it was fascinating and IIRC peaceful and friendly!

I think it's so important we learn about different cultures and it also shows areas of harmony eg some Jewish and Muslim women have really useful head covering advice. I am actually atheist these days and don't really agree with religious head covering - but I still respect peoples' wishes to discuss. Plus alopecia doesn't care about religion - it can affect anyone! I've had so much useful information from MN about wigs and tying wraps and scarves (anyone remember the MN scarf? Grin) which I am really grateful for.

TheShellBeach · 07/04/2024 12:40

I loved the AMA about Judaism.
It was very peaceful, apart from one annoying man who kept interfering, and even answering questions on bedikot cloths.
🤣

I have a cheeky question. I wouldn't go onto a Jewish or a Muslim board to ask it since that would be intrusive, But since I am already on this thread and yammering about carbs I wonder if I could use the opportunity to ask a question that some Jewish and Muslim women might be in a position to answer?
It's about head coverings. I have alopecia and wear a wig. When exercising at the gym I would prefer to wear a turban or some such, and I am perpetually on the lookout for something super, super cool.
If there is anyone here who wears a head covering of any sort - whether hijab, wig, whatever - and sometimes needs to find the coolest option available, do you have a website that you can recommend that supplies turbans or similar for sport? I do have a range of go-to online shops, but have never found anything as sport-friendly as I would like.

Found you! Re: sport, I used to just wrap a microfibre sweat towel into a knot, but the best solution I found was to actually embrace the baldness. I don't know your level of hair loss though. I had hair loss which graduating from cutting my long hair into a bob to reduce the weight, then a pixie and then as the sides were completely bare, I gave in and shaved it.

For the gym (and actually in every day life), it was the best thing I ever did! At first I found it hard as I felt so self conscious, but I used the Women Only room which helped me feel more comfortable. The first time was the hardest, I took a friend which helped. I actually received a lot of positive comments which was lovely. I feel so much more empowered and proud of my head which sounds odd I know. Hard but worth it, just like the gym itself.

(I sometimes used a sweat headband depending on amount of effort required working out )

yes I have read the orthodox jewish AMA and found it very interesting. although I have jewish friends and lived in North London for a long time, didn't have any orthodox jewish contacts, so it was eye opening.

@ShoesShoesShoesAndMaybeMoreShoes the first time making a visible 'statement' with how we look can feel really daunting.

I was really nervous taking DC swimming for the first time as I just didn't know how people would react to me in hijab and a swimming outfit from a different culture in a Western swimming pool...

this here is why separate boards aren’t always such a good idea. If everyone ‘stays in their lane’ we don’t get closer together as humans.

the black mumsnetters board is very clear it’s only for black mumsnetters - who decides which boards are for who and regulates this?

MNHQ ultimately have the final say, since they can delete posts which are reported to them.

But you know that. Why do you keep coming back to this thread? You obviously don't support the setting up of a Muslim board.

Actually that's not entirely true about the black mumsnetters board

Ive seen threads where they specifically say that are after the experiences of black people bevause its specific to their experience, such as schools or areas to live etc.

But Ive also seen white and mixed race people ask question about curly hair care and been answered with lots of help and kindness.

So in the spirit of the query above, about hair covering, if the jewish and muslim boards operate in the same way, then there is no reason at all for posters with alopecia to not ask questions about hair coverings. In fact as some black women also wear hair coverings that particular poster could probably have gone on black mumsnetters and also recieved some lovely replies.

But go you for using someones health condition to justify your fairly isolated opinion 🙄

Parkingt111 · 07/04/2024 13:05

The Jewish Orthodox AMA's were amazing and I learnt so much! More than i ever did at school, they would actually be great resources for teachers to use who cover Judaism in school as additional knowledge as with my experience with learning about Islam in RE the textbooks dont always get it right. I'm glad they were added to classics and extremely grateful to the lovely ladies who conducted them.

ShoesShoesShoesAndMaybeMoreShoes · 07/04/2024 13:13

@Suddenarabia okay bloody hell, we ALL get your opinion - you couldn't make it any clearer you don't support a Muslim board, I honestly feel you are stirring here.

@therealcookiemonster, it was anti climatic actually! No one seemed to give me a second glance Grin. In following visits some women actually complimented me and it was interesting that quite a few said they wished they could do it too. I still get comments all the time in different settings, and every single one has been positive.

Interested to hear your experience @Scirocco. Do you feel too hot if you're covered?

Suddenarabia · 07/04/2024 13:18

well I use this site as much as anyone else and would like it to be inclusive and supportive of everyone.

you’re right in that I don’t believe there should be lots of specific religion boards, whatever ones they are. However, if people want a space to discuss cultural religious topics could there be Religious Culture board which is inclusive of all religions and where people know they can go to discuss and find likeminded people?

Scirocco · 07/04/2024 13:18

Actually it's been really positive! A couple of the dads in particular have been really respectful. DC pulled my hijab off in the pool the other week and the only dad present, without saying anything, moved round so he was obscuring me from the view of the other male swimmers while I fixed it!
