Muslim Board

Hi @mnhq is it possible to please request a Muslim Board on here, a safe space for Muslims to have to speak freely about things that matter and should be discussed? Similar to that of the Jewish board.

Since we're back on biryani I need a dispute settled - how do people feel about fish biryani??

Scirocco · 07/04/2024 10:30

Assalamu alaikum everyone.

We're now on page 20 of this thread.

There are quite a few 'small' boards on Mumsnet, to meet the needs of specific groups.

If MNHQ are concerned that Muslim parents might not have faith- and culture- based questions and issues around parenting, here are a few examples of things that would include specific elements meaning they probably wouldn't get as useful responses in a more generalised board.

How do I explain my faith-based wishes as part of my birth plan?

What shop-bought baby foods are halal?

The debate around male circumcision - lots of different opinions and faith brings in an extra layer of complexity to how people feel about this.

When and how should I start teaching my child how to pray, read Arabic letters, etc?

How can I encourage my child's nursery or school to talk positively about Islam?

How do I start a halal savings account for my child?

Should we pick an Islamic school or a non-faith school? Has anyone got any experience of [a particular Islamic school]?

How do we find a good madrassa? What should we look for? How should we balance this with other extra curricular activities?

My child wants to learn a musical instrument - what advice should I give them?

Does anyone have access to appropriate educational resources about sex education?

My child has told me they have a boyfriend/girlfriend - how should I navigate this?

Divorce, re-marriage and child custody in Islam.

Just a few examples.

We really like salmon in biryani. I'm not a huge fan of haddock or cod though.

But now I'm wondering if lemon sole could work too...

I have a cheeky question. I wouldn't go onto a Jewish or a Muslim board to ask it since that would be intrusive, But since I am already on this thread and yammering about carbs I wonder if I could use the opportunity to ask a question that some Jewish and Muslim women might be in a position to answer?
It's about head coverings. I have alopecia and wear a wig. When exercising at the gym I would prefer to wear a turban or some such, and I am perpetually on the lookout for something super, super cool.
If there is anyone here who wears a head covering of any sort - whether hijab, wig, whatever - and sometimes needs to find the coolest option available, do you have a website that you can recommend that supplies turbans or similar for sport? I do have a range of go-to online shops, but have never found anything as sport-friendly as I would like.

Look for pre-tied bandana/tichel. I have definitely seen ones designed for sports/swimming (made of v lightweight fabric, I think like that thin stretchy sports fabric, possibly lycra?)

I'll have a look because I've definitely seen it

Scirocco · 07/04/2024 10:44

Hi @GoodOldEmmaNess you'd be very welcome to ask about scarves/turbans/etc on any Muslim board!

Some of the major sports brands have hijabs for sale but they often feel quite heavy and don't sit that well. I remember being all excited about one and spending my entire run having to re-adjust it while overheating!

Some of my favourite scarves are from Aab. They have lots of options for thickness, they do specific sports hijabs but even their normal scarves tend to sit really well. My current swim hijab is from them and other than the time my DC pulled it off (🙈) it's held up really well.

Imaan activewear also does nice sports turbans and scarves - they can often be out of stock though.

Dri-fit material, that's what it's called. To be honest, most pre tied bandanas are so lightweight, you'd probably be fine exercising in them.

I have never ordered from this brand, so I can't comment on it but looks like they have some nice ones, and dri fit also.

I frequently wear pretied bandanas (am wearing one now), and they usually come with a thin strip of velvet inside, to stop them from slipping. They are lightweight (I wear them instead of a wig in the heat of the summer when it is 35-40 celsius) and they are comfortable.

not biryani...

but in Bangladesh (where we are experts on everything fish and rice) we make a hilsa (type of mackerel, but not as strong smelling) pilau and king prawn/lobster pilau. both extremely delicious.

we use coconut milk instead of yoghurt in the prawn pilau.... although there is no marinating anyway

however hilsa while being available in UK is not a fish for non bengalis as it is full of millions of bones. even the most avid bengali fish eater ocassionally ends up in a&e with a bone stuck in their throat

GoodOldEmmaNess · 07/04/2024 10:57

Ooh, thank you both. Tichel is a really good new-to-me word to google and I have already spotted some useful looking results, Ella. Dri-fit is also proving a useful term.
And Scirocco, there is a really suitable looking turban in that shop (https://imaanactive.co.uk/collections/hijabs/products/imaan-turban-crimson?variant=41838837334214) for only 5.99!!
I couldn't wear anything that was too hihab-like as that would feel v cultural-appropriationy (and hot!) but the turban looks spot on. And has some volume, which would help to obscure the lack of hair underneath Blush

I recently bought sport/swim hijab from Adidas that I found to be quite good. I wore it without the inner cap. it wasn't too slippy and was very light.

bandanas will probably look nicer though?

Scirocco · 07/04/2024 11:00

I think turbans and bandanas can be great options for head coverage without looking too overtly faith-based. There are places I wouldn't feel safe wearing my usual hijab styles, but if I need to go there a turban style looks less conspicuous.

I don't want to start a big debate on this. but some Muslims believe that certain musical instruments are not permissable.
other Muslims believe that all are permissable as long as the music is not "unislamic" I.e. obscene lyrics etc.
as with any faith there is a spectrum of observence/belief
there is a rich musical tradition in the islamic world. here is an example of something from the middle east

South Asia

Maqbool Sabri (Sabri Brothers) - La Ilaaha Illallah - Hasbi Rabbi Jallallah - with Lyrics

This qawwali Hasbi Rabbi Jallallah (La Ilaaha Illallah - Zikr / Kalma) is from the album Ya Mustapha (1996) by the lead singer of the Sabri Brothers, Maqbool...

@EllaDisenchanted I love those prints! And they do matching mum and baby sets! I almost want another baby now so we could wear these (if I suggested matching things to DC, they'd just give me their trademarked withering "Oh mummy, no")...

Me toooooo, but I really can't shop right now 😫 I didn't even see the matching 😅

@GoodOldEmmaNess check out wrapunzel - they have a facebook group for people who 'wrap' (cover part/all hair), and it is completely inclusive. You'll learn a tonne. There are Jews, Muslims, Christians, atheists, wiccans (I think that's the right term?) and people who wrap for joy, or because of hair loss. They also have a shop. Look for volumisers (under scarf thing, which gives different shapes to scarves). There is also a youtube channel with demos, and a blog, although I don't know how current the blog is.

The facebook group is called wrapunzel community group https://www.facebook.com/groups/585885144823925

I sometimes attend Quaker meetings, and historically there have been some quite anti-music sentiments among Quakers, too, though this has changed considerably over recent decades. I think that for Quakers it partly had to do with a desire to distance themselves from the ritualised practices of the existing churches; but it also had to do with a mistrust for any 'showy', unspontaneous expression of faith, which was felt to lack the 'discernment' that was meant to be exercised before allowing any ministry to emerge from silence.

GoodOldEmmaNess · 07/04/2024 11:23

Thanks very much for the wrapunzel link, Ella. What a lovely sounding community. Unfortunately I don't have Facebook (and somehow locked myself out of it once, when I tried to resurrect a dormant account) so I can't dig into their pages, but I can check out the YouTube tutorials
I saw a grey 'terry' tichel on the other site you linked to which looks v suitable for me. Presumably I could tie the dangly bits around my head as an alternative to wearing them on the shoulder.

mynameiscalypso · 07/04/2024 11:08

@therealcookiemonster Thank you for the explanation, I hadn't realised it was a divisive issue but that's really helpful.

There can be different views, and it's entirely possible that a child could have parents with different views from each other... On a board with a higher proportion of posters from Muslim backgrounds, people might feel safer to discuss the complexities, while if it were posted on, say, the AIBU, the majority of the thread would probably be taken up with explanations and the OP being attacked for either having concerns/questions or for being part of a faith and culture where some people have concerns/questions.

TheShellBeach · 07/04/2024 11:44

When the Muslim board is set up, would non-Muslims (like me) be welcome to ask respectful questions (such as the musical instrument one)?

Also it's a no to fish biryani from me. I personally don't eat fish at all 😬
As a child I felt utterly betrayed when we were invited to eat over at my aunties and I mistook the small prawns in the biryani as chicken and had a big mouthful 😂
I had no idea prawn biryani existed
