Muslim Board

Hi @mnhq is it possible to please request a Muslim Board on here, a safe space for Muslims to have to speak freely about things that matter and should be discussed? Similar to that of the Jewish board.

This thread is showing in the Active list so hopefully will generate more traction!

yes pls 🙋🏻‍♀️

Adding my support - come on, MNHQ!

Is that the basis for creating a board? How much interest there is? Doesn’t that put minority groups at an automatic disadvantage?

I’m atheist yet I’d like to see a Muslim board. If anyone from a minority group would request one I’d support it as well. You don’t have to be a member of a community to support their request

Parkingt111 · 06/04/2024 12:53

@Scirocco hmm it depends
Was the pay rise intended for you pre zakat date. I'm just wondering if its similar to a loan then, as the money was owed to you before your zakat date but due to circumstances you recieved it later.
Would it then be similar to a loan as you would need to pay zakat on any money owed?
Also congrats on the pay rise!

MermaidEyes · 06/04/2024 13:06

So you can have your own board if you're Jewish, South Asian, Black, Australian...but not Muslim? Because from the response that's what it seems like.

(Not Muslim but adding my voice seeing as this thread is currently trending.)

anotherlevel · 06/04/2024 13:34

I think we need a better explanation than the "As with all new board requests, we're keeping an eye on the level of interest." reason as no one is buying into this.

Yes, and figures to show how many posts were required for other areas to be approved

IClaudine · 06/04/2024 13:38

Just posting to bump.

I am an atheist (or maybe agnostic!) but I support the request. You only have to read the recent thread about the poster who was asking what to serve her daughter at Eid to see why it is needed. The Islamophobia soon crept into that thread.

anotherlevel · 06/04/2024 13:40

It should be made fair. Every request should have the same number of request/support/interest or whatever you want to call it before an approved decision is made. And at the very very least acknowledge the thread much earlier on.

Yes. It was a disgrace that it took MN so long to respond.

Yes there needs to be a clear transparent process about how much interest is needed

Otherwise it looks like Muslim people are having to jump through extra hoops to other people for previous requests

And that would be incredibly disappointing.

SiennaSienna · 06/04/2024 14:17

I cannot believe MN are dragging their heels on this. Way to make people feel less than.

PinkTeaForMe · 06/04/2024 14:19

Quite reflective of real life really. Having to jump through hoop after hoop for things that come to others without them having to give it a second thought. But of course it's just all in our heads and we're being difficult about nothing.....

deconstructingKaren · 06/04/2024 14:29

MHNQ your lack of response is appalling

JazakAllah khair.

It's a complicated one in that it was proposed a couple of months ago but had to be approved through a management meeting that didn't have a set date - I wasn't expecting it to be approved pre-Eid but was aware it was a possibility. So, now that it's been approved earlier than anticipated, but I won't actually receive it until after Eid, BIL and I are having a debate about loans, fiqh, how different schools might differ... I'm thinking maybe I should recalculate zakat and pay it on the proposed new amount just to be safe...

@MNHQ doesn't go anywhere - the only way to draw their attention is to report a post/thread, email them, or tag an individual mod.

Which is part of the problem.

This is in Site Stuff - a small topic set up by MNHQ for queries and issues relating to their own site.

If a SM provider can't even read the small topic they set up for site related issues that is poor management.

The rest of the site is auto moderated and post moderated but this topic should be monitored without users having to report their own posts to be taken seriously.

Everyone - it’s a Saturday. Most office jobs where you make decisions are Mon-Fri and even then decisions aren’t immediate. People have to be consulted. I know they have a Jewish board but I imagine they’re now debating the wiseness of that decision and whether they now want/ should have boards for every religion separately - and the optics of that.

They’ve responded and said they’ll look into it - and I’m sure they will. But it’s not an emergency thing that needs doing over a bloody weekend during half term!

I’m not sure accusations of Islamophobia as a reason to them not making a business decision and responding in under 24 hours are helping anyone!

The thread has been opened for a few days

WTAF?

Of course that was a wise decision - Jewish posters wanted the board.

Same as it would be a wise decision to have a Muslim board as quite a lot of Muslim posters have said they want that.

Suddenarabia · 06/04/2024 16:03

@RavenswoodFalls ok - then if they agree boards for every religion is wise then I’m sure they’ll make a decision to have one. Not sure why you’re wildly angry!

Do you really think questioning whether MN should get rid of a Jewish space is acceptable?

Suddenarabia · 06/04/2024 16:06

@EasterIssland - less than 3 full working days. Most businesses don’t make decisions in those kind of timescales unless it’s urgent, let alone on a site mostly staffed by parents during Easter holidays.

Suddenarabia · 06/04/2024 16:11

I didn’t @RavenswoodFalls I said they might be. The board was launched 6 months ago and only has 2 pages of posts so maybe they don’t think lots more boards are viable.

Mumsnet, is primarily a business and they do what is good for them as one. It’s not about what people want always. I don’t know I don’t work there but am just postulating why snap decisions aren’t being made

If they had said that that would have been understandable. But they didnt.

I know they have a Jewish board but I imagine they’re now debating the wiseness of that decision and whether they now want/ should have boards for every religion separately - and the optics of that.

If that was true the optics of debating the wiseness of the decision would be terrible. Providing boards wouldnt be terrible.
