Muslim Board

Hi @mnhq is it possible to please request a Muslim Board on here, a safe space for Muslims to have to speak freely about things that matter and should be discussed? Similar to that of the Jewish board.

Using @MNHQ doesn't go anywhere, @dangerrabbit

I'm amazed, shocked and very disappointed to see that MN still haven't commented on this thread. Speaks volumes, doesn't it?

Judging by how prevalent Islamophobia, racism and prejudice is on Mumsnet, I’m not surprised, but it still hurts to see it so blatant.

ColumboOnTheCase · 06/04/2024 10:17

Wow 13 pages in and no response.

I fully support a Muslim board, I can't believe there isn't one already.

BeckyAMumsnet · 06/04/2024 10:18

Hi @anotherlevel thanks so much for the suggestion. As with all new board requests, we're keeping an eye on the level of interest. We'll discuss this and get back to you ASAP.

BIWI · 06/04/2024 10:27

I think, @BeckyAMumsnet, the very fact that there are well over 300 posts on this thread should tell you just how much support for this board there is, especially given that the vast majority are positive.

Scirocco · 06/04/2024 10:32

By page 15 and over 300 posts, a definitive answer was given and a new board created in response to a previous similar request...

PeasfullPerson · 06/04/2024 10:32

Is that the basis for creating a board? How much interest there is? Doesn’t that put minority groups at an automatic disadvantage?

mynameiscalypso · 06/04/2024 10:33

How much more interest does there need to be?!

Ferretaria · 06/04/2024 10:33

I'm Christian and support a Muslim board.

ParsonsPont · 06/04/2024 10:34

Hmm, I wanted to assume MN were discussing it in the background. Judging by the latest update, it’s obvious they hoped we would forget about this thread eventually.

PinkTeaForMe · 06/04/2024 10:35

Whether it is five people or five hundred, surely the sanctity of a safe space should be offered to all in an inclusive environment. Or must we just continue to have to prove ourselves worthy over and over again?

TheShellBeach · 06/04/2024 10:35

It's a great shame @BeckyAMumsnet that it's taken MNHQ three days to respond to the OP.

I'd have thought that the mere fact that this thread has continued for that time is testament to the fact that there is, indeed, support for the setting up of a Muslim board.

Scirocco · 06/04/2024 10:35

In the absence of a relevant board, quick zakat query. I've just had a pay rise confirmed - it'll be backdated to a couple of months ago but the first actual payment won't hit my bank account until after Eid. My understanding is that it counts to next year's zakat, but having a debate with someone who says it's this year's as well. Any thoughts?

TheShellBeach · 06/04/2024 10:39

I know there's a South Asian board.
I wonder how long it was before that board was set up.
I recall that the Black MNetters board wasn't set up until the whole of MN was in uproar.

Efacsen · 06/04/2024 10:46

One of the problems with doing some kind of audit of interest by means of the number of posts on this thread is that the vast majority of Mumsnet users- Muslim or otherwise won't even know about the existence of this thread in order to express an opinion

It's really quite a strange strategy

anotherlevel · 06/04/2024 10:48

@BeckyAMumsnet thanks for responding. I would echo PP in saying there is absolutely a definite need and interest for it. You only have to look on other threads across the CIME and other boards to see that there is. I don't think it's an unreasonable request as I'm sure others don't too. What would be unreasonable is to deny the request.

Yes I was thinking this too. It's unreasonable to expect every single Muslim mumsnetter to have seen this thread given that it doesn't always appear on active feeds.

Conversely the Aussie & NZ board was set up in less than a day and with far fewer posts requesting it.

Surely 300+ people is enough? Never heard of this for any other board.

Kasperber · 06/04/2024 11:11

Maybe they find more strength in their identity and with each other because people are so disgustingly prejudiced against them

This. As I said, I’m an atheist. I’m also Orthodox Jewish by birth. I also have a strong Jewish identity. There are some situations in my life that are uniquely related to my ethnicity. I can post in chat, AiBU or Other Subjects about them. Since a Jewish board was set up, I know there are going to be other posters on there who totally ‘get it’ and the nuances that are often involved, it’s nice to be able to post something without having to explain what I mean and why i feel as I do.

I love the Telly and Radio addicts boards, Style and Beauty, Chat, AIBU, News, What We Are Reading boards. I don’t segregate on here, I don’t segregate myself in RL either. As a British Jew, I do however feel increasingly guarded, fearful, conflicted and beleaguered since 7th October. It’s good to have somewhere specific to go with all that.

MNHQ if there was enough interest for a Jewish Board, which is bound to have very few posters compared with a Muslim Board, I’m struggling to see why you have to question whether it will be used

Which makes it entirely obvious that there is support for this thread.

LifeofBrienne · 06/04/2024 11:33

I'm not Muslim, but wanted to express support and bump this thread. It makes sense that Muslims might want to discuss all sorts of things - Ramadan, clothes, bereavement, whatever - that have a cultural and faith dimension, and not have to deal with random unhelpful comments about the hijab or the ridiculousness of religion (or at least to a lesser extent!).
And it's not segregation. It's not like anyone would be prevented from posting in Chat, Gardening or Style and Beauty because they're Muslim and there's a Muslim board.

SevenSeasOfRhye · 06/04/2024 11:34

Islam is the second most common religion in the UK (6.5% of population at the last census) so I would expect MN to have a good number of Muslim members.

Efacsen · 06/04/2024 11:38

Dilbertian · 06/04/2024 11:17

But BeckyMumsnet's post is asking for more interest than already posted - so new posters expressing interest

JamTartLover · 06/04/2024 11:42

I support this board!

It will be very interesting shameful if MNHQ choose to not have a board for Muslim Mnetters.

These boards aren't designed to be divisive, they are designed to be a safe space to discuss topics that people from that community understand. I've seen so many threads regarding Islam where Mnetters have said that the OP is better posting in a topic more likely to seen by other Muslims as they understand the nuances of the topic.

If people want a board for different religions/communities, create a thread and ask MNHQ for one.
