Muslim Board

Hi @mnhq is it possible to please request a Muslim Board on here, a safe space for Muslims to have to speak freely about things that matter and should be discussed? Similar to that of the Jewish board.

But as many others have said in various ways how on earth does the existence of different topics amount to segregation? People aren't being asked to separate their whole posting behaviour into a faith-based silo. They are just being given (or hopefully being given) a topic in which to discuss matters that are specifically about faith, or faith-related cultural things, or any other matter that is specifically to do with being Muslim.
Are dog owners and cat owners segregated by the existence of dog and cat boards?
And I would respectfully suggest that if you have had some aggressive replies it maybe because the bristling tone with which you entered the thread (which was was in fact beautifully cross-cultural and warm )suggested that you hadn't read enough of the thread to understand people's actual motivations in requesting or supporting a Muslim board.

Suddenarabia · 05/04/2024 23:59

@ADoggyDogWorld I clearly meant attacking me for putting forward an alternative position not for requesting a Muslim board 🙄

@dimllaishebiaith could you have said that whilst not being attacking? Could we have chatted without that? I don’t think anything I’ve said - go through with a fine tooth comb - is showing any ‘true motives’ beyond what I have stated?

Suddenarabia · 06/04/2024 00:05

@GoodOldEmmaNess you make a good point in a respectful way. There’s something in me that doesn’t like dividing things by religion but maybe I am incorrect. I am probably driven by personal motivation which is that, despite growing up and living in London I had never had a proper Muslim friend until a couple of years ago. I genuinely thought we probably wouldn’t get on with me being an atheist. But we do. Really well. And it made me think how segregation might stop those relationships.

Iamtheoneinten · 06/04/2024 00:07

Wow, 13 pages in on a site stuff post, multiple (barely disguised) derailers, lots of direct reports to bring it to the attention of those in control, and still no MNHQ response.
Interesting…..

Right back at ya with your accusations of intolerance and use of the word gross...

Its depressing isnt it! I only hope MN see the light and understand that there is plenty of support here for the board and a clear need for it for people to be able to speak away from those attacking them on this thread and others

Parkingt111 · 06/04/2024 00:10

Depending on where you are in the world or which branch you follow is it your 27th night or 26th of Ramadhan?
Its my 27th night and just finished listening to the dua from my local mosque which was beautiful, a moment of reflection to remember all those suffering around the world
Hopefully we have a answer by mumsnet tomorrow
Good night to all
Also if you are muslim and observing then try to put some money in charity tonight if you can incase it's laylatul qadr, even if it's a £1

Parkingt111 · 06/04/2024 00:13

For those who are not Muslim just as a simple explanation, Laylatul Qadr is a night mentioned in the Quran as a night that is better than a thousand months. Nobody knows exactly when it is but it is commonly believed to be one of the odd nights in the last 10 nights of Ramadhan, and that's why it's encouraged to do extra good deeds then including giving in charity for those who are able to.

Parkingt111 · 06/04/2024 00:17

Also to clarify I'm not trying to initiate any moon war debates by asking if you are on the 26th or 27th night 😂

anotherlevel · 06/04/2024 00:17

@Parkingt111 it's 27th for us here. I've never really understood why some start Ramadhan earlier/later than others. Surely if you see the moon it's the same everywhere else?

Thanks for reminder, I've set up a direct debit for a site called my ten nights where it automatically takes out money for the last ten days x

@Suddenarabia discussion on the Craicnet board extends way beyond religious persuasion.

Parkingt111 · 06/04/2024 00:22

@anotherlevel as I said moon wars lol
Maybe this topic for another day
Oh yes I have heard of my ten nights that's a great initiative

anotherlevel · 06/04/2024 00:24

@Parkingt111 I've just seen it sorry my phone didn't refresh the app.

@anotherlevel no problem also thank you for requesting a muslim board, I have always thought it would be nice to have

Lovely explanation and a lovely example of having a muslim board where most people would know what it is x

its 27th for us, having a quick MN break from reading and then back to some duas.
we did the automated charity donations too - makes life a lot easier! Have also reminded family and kids to donate whatever they can to any charity they want to support and pray it is accepted.

OnBoardTheHeartOfGold · 06/04/2024 00:32

It's not hard to understand that we each have our own identity. Having a supportive space for this isn't segregation.
Our identity is made up of many aspects and it's pretty narrow minded to think that a Muslim mnetter would only segregate themselves and keep to the Muslim section. You wouldn't even know if they were on other parts of mumsnet and what else make up their identity.
Maybe they find more strength in their identity and with each other because people are so disgustingly prejudiced against them.

BunniesRUs · 05/04/2024 22:52

Still waiting I see.

And in the company of people upset Muslims exist .... should Muslims just exist mutely and passively? Not allowed to have wants and needs?

I could have done with a Muslim Board for when my ex was cheating on me a a decade ago and I had nowhere to get get useful advice from. MN mainstream advice was kind but lacking due to cultural and religious illiteracy.

Edited

@BunniesRUs I feel you. I could have done with one too when I got divorced. Whilst I dealt with the divorce (no kids, my feelings towards my ex), what was hard was facing the community again and my own feelings of failure and shame and knowing I was the sole topic of conversation amongst all the aunties out there. I'm sure they forgot about it after a while and it's been years now but the trauma has never really left me and it would have been nice to get advice from anyone who had been in a similar situation, how to deal with nasty comments etc.

BunniesRUs · 06/04/2024 07:40

Hug @Vanessashanessajenkins2 I hope you're doing great now and rolling your eyes at those aunties.

Samosas are not only a 'Muslim food' or whatever you think it is

@Parkingt111 yes. You’ve grasped the point. I’m pointing out the ludicrousness of such posts as

Count me in for a Muslim board!
To be honest, I need some really good recipes from different parts of the world

Any news?

Why so long?

@MNHQ doesn't go anywhere - the only way to draw their attention is to report a post/thread, email them, or tag an individual mod.

Scirocco · 06/04/2024 09:45

I'm really struggling to see what's so controversial about this idea. There's clear precedent for similar boards, it's still public and moderate-able, and this thread alone has shown that many people would like it.

Combined with the sheer amount of Anti-Muslim prejudice and hate that's allowed to remain on boards, as well as personal attacks (eg. just the other day it was suggested to me that it was surely understandable that civilian friends and colleagues of mine had been killed because it's hard to tell who's an enemy and who isn't, that doctors volunteering in Palestine are Hamas, and that comparing me with Mengele was a perfectly reasonable thing to do) - it does feel like Muslim posters aren't perhaps a priority in terms of safe(r) spaces.

dangerrabbit · 06/04/2024 09:57

I support this board as well (although not Muslim, dp is Jewish) @mnhq will you respond to these requests

BIWI · 06/04/2024 10:02

Using @MNHQ doesn't go anywhere, @dangerrabbit

I'm amazed, shocked and very disappointed to see that MN still haven't commented on this thread. Speaks volumes, doesn't it?

Saucery · 06/04/2024 10:06

Not even an acknowledgement message is pretty poor. No one expects an immediate decision but surely it’s good practice and community engagement to at least say they are thinking about it?
