Muslim Board

Hi @mnhq is it possible to please request a Muslim Board on here, a safe space for Muslims to have to speak freely about things that matter and should be discussed? Similar to that of the Jewish board.

Maybe but then mn should remove those existing boards (who some members of the mn community feel they’re their safe space and I respect that ). You can’t grant it to some and reject it to others

100%

Suddenarabia · 05/04/2024 21:34

Because a faith is not a topic or an interest @GoodOldEmmaNess

it’s a belief system

RavenswoodFalls · 05/04/2024 21:34

@Suddenarabia The thing is, if you don’t want a board you don’t have to post there.

People have said they do want a board. There are plenty of other boards that cater for particular subsets of posters. Why are you so against this one?

TheShellBeach · 05/04/2024 21:35

@Suddenarabia the thread has started to discuss recipes because MNHQ haven't answered the OP and her supporters yet.

I'm not a Muslim and I object to your accusation that I'm virtue signalling.

Suddenarabia · 05/04/2024 21:36

Samosas are not only a 'Muslim food' or whatever you think it is

@Parkingt111 yes. You’ve grasped the point. I’m pointing out the ludicrousness of such posts as

Count me in for a Muslim board!
To be honest, I need some really good recipes from different parts of the world

Suddenarabia · 05/04/2024 21:37

@RavenswoodFalls im not SO against this one. I’m just pointing out that I don’t think there should be any faith boards and that there’s more that unites than divides us

RavenswoodFalls · 05/04/2024 21:37

If I want a safe space for Furries, or Bondage lovers, can I demand that too.

If you want to, although I imagine it’s already catered for in the Sex board.

MNHQ might get back to you more quickly on that than they have done here!

TakeMe2Insanity · 05/04/2024 21:37

11 pages in and mumsnet are ignoring..interesting.

Kasperber · 05/04/2024 21:38

Because there’s no need for divisive religious boards.

Im an atheist. I was brought up with no instruction , information either positive or negative of my religion. I am 100% Jewish Orthodox by ethnicity.

I find the Jewish MNers board very comforting, helpful and important. Since 7th October I’ve experienced the most antisemitism I’ve ever been subjected to in my life. I’m not on the board because I’m religious. I don’t want to separate myself from other people of other faiths or none.

I use the board because there because posters on there understand, are going through similar and support each other. You can be an atheist Muslim, Jew, Christian, Hindu etc. You still won’t be immune to prejudice and you will still have cultural shared experiences and problems that you might want to share with others within your community . We live in an increasingly polarised and divisive world. Sometimes you need others who know what it’s like to be judged, stereotyped, abused and blamed. Sometimes you just want a good recipe or a whinge or someone’s opinion about something you’re going through,

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 05/04/2024 21:39

My dog has a topic.
Vegans have a topic.
Aussie and NZ has a topic.
Muslim is a perfectly reasonable request.

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 05/04/2024 21:42

We could even preempt a Hindu board.

Parkingt111 · 05/04/2024 21:42

I would just like to say that even if for any reason mumsnet deny the request for a muslim board I personally wouldn't like to see any of the other boards that were created for minorities or as safe spaces for other groups taken away as I don't think that's right either

Because the point of a site for women is meant to be uniting women - not creating smaller and smaller pockets of people in their own bubble not talking to anyone else. Isn’t that a fundamental problem of the internet?

Do Muslims fundamentally have different issues to anyone else? Of course not. And there’s enough Muslims on mumsnet to speak on a general topic if it was something very specific - it’s a population of 7m not a tiny minority.

this made me laugh.....

please please advice me on the fiq of periods .... and while we are at it what suraahs should I recite when my SIL is in labour

how about the Prophetic advice on what is the best way of sleep?

can you also advice the Jewish mumsnetters on their religious practices or South Asian mumsnetters on how to deal with the particularly unique toxicity that they might experience with their families?

you are the one being divisive. this thread has been lovely with mumsnetters of many backgrounds chatting on various topics. Muslim topic wouldn't be password entry only to Muslims! all will be welcome, but it will be a safe space for Muslim mumsnetters.

therealcookiemonster · 05/04/2024 21:44

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 05/04/2024 21:42

I would welcome this. ♡

GoodOldEmmaNess · 05/04/2024 21:46

Because a faith is not a topic or an interest ...it’s a belief system

What a strange thing to say. Why can't a belief system also be a topic and/or an interest?

anotherlevel · 05/04/2024 21:47

@Suddenarabia can you please explain if it is sunnah or not to move from your current prayer space after completing a fardh prayer and starting a sunnah prayer? Or can you pray in the same spot?

this is an excellent question. I look forward to @Suddenarabia 's advice regarding this including all appropriate references as well as a discussion on differences of opinion that exist regarding this among the four schools of fiqh

Kasperber · 05/04/2024 21:50

Do Muslims fundamentally have different issues to anyone else? Of course not

How do you arrive at this conclusion ?

TheShellBeach · 05/04/2024 21:53

Do Muslims fundamentally have different issues to anyone else? Of course not

Oh for goodness sake.
I'm a Christian and I do not presume to decide for Muslims what their issues are.

The fact is that there has been a request for this board, and I fully support the request.

Dilbertian · 05/04/2024 21:54

Suddenarabia · 05/04/2024 21:21

Because there’s no need for divisive religious boards.

Faith-specific boards are no more divisive than any other special-interest boards. The majority are supportive for posters trying to navigate life in a society that may not reflect their lives - a person in a naice Home Counties town may feel very isolated by virtue of their differences, be it skin colour, country of origin, non-Christian faith, disability, financial situation or niche hobby. These boards are not exclusive (nor are they so-called safe spaces) as any of us may read or post. We may find things that bring us together (love of carbs!) and gain understanding, even make friends with people who are not, after all, so very different to us.

do Black mn ers have different issues ? And Australia ones ? And Jewish? And south Asian?

these are existing boards in mn … why aren’t you complaining about them ?

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 05/04/2024 21:56

Do gold fish keepers fundamentally have different issues to anyone else?

My fish has fin rot, I know AIBU is the best place to post.

EasterIssland · 05/04/2024 21:56

Suddenarabia · 05/04/2024 21:33

I don’t understand all this talk of ‘safe spaces’. It would be no safer than anywhere else on this forum!!!

And following your logic. If I want a safe space for Furries, or Bondage lovers, can I demand that too.

There is some for cats and dogs. If you want one for furries ask for one

BIWI · 05/04/2024 21:56

I bet you're one of those posters @Suddenarabia who claimed that if MN set up a Black Mumsnetters board that they also needed to set up one for White Mumsnetters.

Oh, and if you want a separate board for whatever your particular sexual fantasy might be, you're well within your rights to ask for one.

There is a black mn one already
