Jewish Mumsnetter Section

Asthebellcurves · 14/10/2023 14:43

I was asked by Mumsnet to start a post here to request a Jewish Mumsnetter section. This request comes out of a thread where Jewish people were discussing ethnic and religious identities that was then co-opted by others refusing to provide space for those conversations. Thus illustrating the need for a distinct Jewish space on here. Of course, Jewish conversation and contribution is valuable across mumsnet, but a neat space for Jewish perspectives to be protected and valued is a great addition - just as Black, South Asian, Welsh, Irish and Scottish mumsnetters have and benefit from.

”When it comes to starting new boards, we're pretty much guided by what our users want. The Black Mumsnetters, SE Asian MNers, Craicnet, etc came about because users started threads requesting their own space. We'll certainly give consideration to a Jewish Mumsnetters section if there is demand. You're quite welcome to start a thread in Site Stuff to ask if others feel the same.”

I know many of us have felt very hurt by the moderation of Mumsnet this week, as anti semitic posters have been allowed to run wild while many factual comments that are supportive of the Jewish community have been deleted. I hope this may serve as an opportunity for Mumsnet to build much needed bridges.

Also not Jewish but have friends directly affected by last Saturdays attacks so have been following the news closely. I've had to step away from so many threads due to the amount of blatant anti semitism.

CesareBorgia · 14/10/2023 19:14

I'm not Jewish but I hope you get a board. I'm surprised there isn't one already!

Teddleshon · 14/10/2023 19:14

I’m not Jewish but I am sickened to the bone by the anti semitism on display this week and I support you 100%.

AtmosAtmos · 14/10/2023 19:15

Not Jewish, support this. I’ve kept off most of the threads. As PP said will need something at the top and likely better not appear in Active.

Maireas · 14/10/2023 19:15

I'm on another thread and have just reported an antisemitic post. It has been removed 👍

etmoietmoietmoi · 14/10/2023 19:16

I actually feel tearful at some of the lovely posts from non-Jewish people here. It's such an antidote.

And it's a relief tbqh. In some of the other threads I found myself sending a 'thank you' post to replies from posters that had managed to interact with me without 'doing an antisemitism', or just being a trolling twat. But I shouldn't have felt that I had to say thank you. I shouldn't have felt so utterly grateful not to have had a goady, Jew-baiting reply.

BananaPyjamaLlama · 14/10/2023 19:18

Not Jewish but I support this.

Just bear in mind that you'll still get comments from "others"
eg people who arent Irish/Welsh/Scottish often accidentally (or deliberately) comment on Irish/Welsh/Scottish threads.
Ditto parents with no experience of boarding schools offering their thoughts on the Parents of boarding school kids threads.

I wish I didn't want to say 'yes' to this – the thought crossed my mind: "Surely this too shall pass? Surely in a few months it won't be needed?"

But as many, many other PPs have said, the baked-in antisemitism around here has shocked me this week, and I genuinely don't know how things are going to progress.

Add my name to the request: in a world where we're never truly permitted to feel safe and 'home', let's attempt a little space where we might feel it here.

Lindos1 · 14/10/2023 19:22

I'm not Jewish but I've been feeling absolutely sick & shaken all week. I'm screaming inside thinking about those who've been taken hostage. I don't know why there isn't more outrage about this world-wide.
I can't imagine what you must be going through if you are Jewish. I'm so, so sorry.
I totally agree you should have your own space, but it's so sad that it's come to this.

PollyPaintsFlowers · 14/10/2023 19:24

Great idea. This would be great

Teddleshon · 14/10/2023 19:25

@quantumbutterfly I wish there was a way us non Jews could show our support for the Jewish community at this terrible time.

saturnspinkhoop · 14/10/2023 19:25

I also think that a Jewish mumsnetters section is a great idea.

DuskyBlueDepartingLight · 14/10/2023 19:26

I fully support this.

The antisemitism on MN this week has been appalling.

loveforallhatredfornone · 14/10/2023 19:26

I'm not Jewish but also want to lend my support for this proposal.

Some of what I have read on threads this week has been utterly horrifying to see,

Sending my support and love to you all

Not jewish but support this. The antisemitism and open vitriol has been horrific on mumsnet this week.

I agree.

SorrelForbes · 14/10/2023 19:30

Yes please.

BeggyMitchell · 14/10/2023 19:31

Well done Mumsnet HQ 👍🏻.

bananasplitsarefab · 14/10/2023 19:34

Not Jewish but I fully support this.

I have been horrified by the blatant antisemitism on some threads. I have reported several posts and they have been removed.

This is in Berlin today (see pics) graffiti marking the homes of Jews.

I am glad my grandparents are not around to see this, but it would not have surprised them. 😞

That is so so upsetting to see.

I fully support a Jewish board despite being an atheist myself.

I've been utterly horrified by some of the excuses for inexcusable Hamas atrocities and the rhetoric that Israeli Jews should not be entitled to protect themselves.

I really hope that Jewish Mumsnetters can feel some support and empathy on here. No one deserves what Jewish people have been subjected to time and again the world over.

@BlurredEdges that's disgusting, it's 2023.
