Jewish Mumsnetter Section

Asthebellcurves · 14/10/2023 14:43

I was asked by Mumsnet to start a post here to request a Jewish Mumsnetter section. This request comes out of a thread where Jewish people were discussing ethnic and religious identities that was then co-opted by others refusing to provide space for those conversations. Thus illustrating the need for a distinct Jewish space on here. Of course, Jewish conversation and contribution is valuable across mumsnet, but a neat space for Jewish perspectives to be protected and valued is a great addition - just as Black, South Asian, Welsh, Irish and Scottish mumsnetters have and benefit from.

”When it comes to starting new boards, we're pretty much guided by what our users want. The Black Mumsnetters, SE Asian MNers, Craicnet, etc came about because users started threads requesting their own space. We'll certainly give consideration to a Jewish Mumsnetters section if there is demand. You're quite welcome to start a thread in Site Stuff to ask if others feel the same.”

I know many of us have felt very hurt by the moderation of Mumsnet this week, as anti semitic posters have been allowed to run wild while many factual comments that are supportive of the Jewish community have been deleted. I hope this may serve as an opportunity for Mumsnet to build much needed bridges.

Please don't call yourself that @VerityUnreasonble , you are not and there is not one. People are people and their ethnicity or race does not determine whether they are good or evil. You alone are not responsible for political decisions any more than I am or anyone else in any country.

I understand that you are probably in a very confused position and place right now. But it will get better Flowers

petuniasandpetals · 14/10/2023 20:29

Yes please.
Jews have very different attitudes to their religion. Many observant Jews will be observing the Sabbath and won't be using phones etc on a Saturday.
So there may well be many more who support this idea but won't see this thread as it has gone from Active.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 14/10/2023 20:30

I'm not Jewish but I'm scared when the future holds.

I'm only here because my great great grandfather fled a massacre where his family died and started a new life and family.

PurpleChrayne · 14/10/2023 20:32

Shavua tov!

Please can we have a section of our own.

For our own safety and also just to chat to other Jewish women.

This is a good idea. I'd also like the people who moderate MN to learn a bit about antisemitism (this is a good starting point https://www.holocaustremembrance.com/resources/working-definitions-charters/working-definition-antisemitism, last three items on the list in particular).

Absolutely. The moderation quality this week has unfortunately been poor, and has allowed for the normalisation of antisemitism.

We need to do better than say never again, we have to action never again, and that means places like Mumsnet taking responsibility and learning to protect Jewish people online. I hope a conversation about meaningfully protecting the Jewish Mumsnet board but also Jewish users on the site as a whole can be had.

Not Jewish but would fully support this.

@BlurredEdges - that is frankly terrifying.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 14/10/2023 20:45

Not halachically Jewish.
and I definitely support this.

clopper · 14/10/2023 20:47

Atheist here, but hope you get your own board.

I can’t believe there is not more said about all those innocents kidnapped. Can’t bear to watch the BBC as it seems all from the other side with little discussion of the hostages and all those killed in Israel.

I feel so sorry for Jewish people across Europe who are now feeling fearful and alone after all that happened in WW2, and who are not directly affected by this atrocity ….you are not alone.

Adifferentangle · 14/10/2023 22:01

Not Jewish. Support what you need. I'm so surprised at the anti-semitism. When George Floyd - one man - was killed in the US my company offered counselling to black people and put a communication on the intranet. The Ukraine war led to a announcement. The recent Hamas attack was one of the most shocking and horrific attacks in recent years/my lifetime and not a word from my company.

Towerofsong · 15/10/2023 06:07

Yes please, mumsnet please have a Jewish section. We need it.

SpuytenDuyvil · 15/10/2023 07:11

Yes, please. I am in the US and we had to close our synagogue's campus all weekend after a notice from Homeland Security about security threats. We had zoom services and everyone was so sad and traumatized from the last week.

Rocknrollstar · 15/10/2023 07:28

Definitely yes please.

Maireas · 15/10/2023 07:38

I've been shocked by some of the antisemitism reported this morning at the pro Palestinian rallies. They're not even masking it as anti Zionism. The Jewish community needs to be protected.

BlurredEdges · 15/10/2023 07:56

I'd like you lovely people on this thread to see the sort of thing that's being posted at me as a British Jew on this thread

Have a look at the posts from mumsy27 posted overnight.

"Let's see where your allegiance is Britain or Israel"

"Guess you're used to slaughtering Palestinians after 75 years" and so on.

Just see basic antisemitism and hatred in its unadulterated form.

Due to visit London in the next few weeks. Anxious with Palestinian protests and so forth in the news. I don’t want to be near that with young chi...

WolfFoxHare · 15/10/2023 08:04

@BlurredEdges that’s horrific. I’m so sorry you’re having to see that. I really hope those posts get deleted and the poster banned.

EasternStandard · 15/10/2023 08:16

I hope mnhq are taking a hardline stance too

I’ve seen some deletions which I think have been good, some last night. Banning is a good way to go imo

BlurredEdges · 15/10/2023 08:17

@EasternStandard let's see how long it takes those to go, if at all. I guess at least it shows what they really think.

I am appalled. I am so sorry.

MNHQ, are you going to remove this antisemite's account or just delete the comments as you "feel they cross a line" - but let the poster continue the racism you know now they harbour, as long as they "moderate their language" with the right code words and dog whistles?

SugarAndSpiceIsNice · 15/10/2023 08:22

Not Jewish but support this.
Anti-Semitism running wild in threads in Mumsnet is very painful to witness. I feel very sorry for Jewish posters who've patiently put up with the appalling behaviour.

ATerrorofLeftovers · 15/10/2023 08:33

I’d like this. I’ve been appalled by the antisemitism we’ve had to deal with on here. I also think MNHQ could usefully train it’s staff in how to spot it and how to deal with it.

gingergran · 15/10/2023 08:35

Mumsnet HQ are you going to respond???

thinkfast · 15/10/2023 08:39

Yes please. Great idea. I also like the suggestion that you have to be a member for a reasonable period before you can post on it.

PeachCrayon · 15/10/2023 08:41

100% support this. Shocked by the unmoderated antisemitism on here.

LargeSquareRock · 15/10/2023 08:49

Also not Jewish but support this. No matter how much they try and wrap it in false social justice platitudes, fancy words, and student union tropes the anti-semitism of a large number of posters cannot be hidden. Their true colours are showing and they are ugly. I am very sorry to hear of the horrific experiences of so many Jewish mumsnetters on this thread.

itsmyp4rty · 15/10/2023 08:56

I support any minority group having a space to talk (more) freely - especially at such an incredibly distressing time as this. Why is MN putting you through this rigmarole?
