Jewish Mumsnetter Section

Asthebellcurves · 14/10/2023 14:43

I was asked by Mumsnet to start a post here to request a Jewish Mumsnetter section. This request comes out of a thread where Jewish people were discussing ethnic and religious identities that was then co-opted by others refusing to provide space for those conversations. Thus illustrating the need for a distinct Jewish space on here. Of course, Jewish conversation and contribution is valuable across mumsnet, but a neat space for Jewish perspectives to be protected and valued is a great addition - just as Black, South Asian, Welsh, Irish and Scottish mumsnetters have and benefit from.

”When it comes to starting new boards, we're pretty much guided by what our users want. The Black Mumsnetters, SE Asian MNers, Craicnet, etc came about because users started threads requesting their own space. We'll certainly give consideration to a Jewish Mumsnetters section if there is demand. You're quite welcome to start a thread in Site Stuff to ask if others feel the same.”

I know many of us have felt very hurt by the moderation of Mumsnet this week, as anti semitic posters have been allowed to run wild while many factual comments that are supportive of the Jewish community have been deleted. I hope this may serve as an opportunity for Mumsnet to build much needed bridges.

IDK but maybe 3 months of posting would be better - as was the case originally with the Sex board at least whilst it is so febrile?

Too many foxes already in the hen-house who have joined recently?

BlurredEdges · 16/10/2023 13:36

The 'threads I'm on', apart from this one, which is a haven, are an absolute bonfire of lies, insults, conspiracy theories, and outright racism. Don't understand why MN just lets them run and run.

Meanwhile they deleted the thread supposedly started by someone concerned about her Jewish friend wanting to support Israel.

While the op of the thread may have been not above board, it was actually a really valuable collection of the experiences, trauma and fears of Jewish people in the UK. So of course it's been zapped...

Enyo2 · 16/10/2023 14:02

@BCCoach On that basis are you for or against a section for Jewish posters? Or not taking a stand either way? I ask because the OP needs the figures - statistically :)

Other posters are indicting if they want one as. Jewish person, or support as not. I’d imagine that helps statistically too :)

Hi all - we've created a new board:
https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/jewish-mumsnetters

We haven't imposed any time restrictions on posting but will monitor the situation. Please do use your new space. Periodically, we review the boards and may close those with minimal activity.

Thanks, everyone.

@Enyo2 I'm not Jewish and have no opinion either way. However I am predicting it will not be a safe haven for discussing matters that affect Jews, as the antisemites who freely post on the rest of the site will happily post there too, much as the racists who post all over the site also happily post in the Black Mumsnetters chat (usually to tell black people that <insert racist stuff> isn't actually racist at all and they are just being oversensitive).

Almahart · 16/10/2023 14:15

My grandfather was Jewish and much of his extended family is in Israel. I completely support the need for a Jewish board here and also agree that moderators need better training in understanding what anti semitism looks like.

Almahart · 16/10/2023 14:16

Posted too late, I'm glad to see this.

Thank you much appreciated

A minimum time of account user ownership would surely be a no brainer considering the current situation globally though wouldn't it. So anyone with an account less than say 3 months old can only read and not post.

I mean these are not normal times for the Jewish users or mumsnet. In fact if you added that restriction now you would save your moderators a lot of work!

I've posted several times on this thread, including on page 1, and said unequivocally that I am in favour.

SadlyACupOfTeaDoesNotSolveEverything · 16/10/2023 14:51

Great outcome.

SpuytenDuyvil · 16/10/2023 14:52

Thank you, @Asthebellcurves and @BeckyAMumsnet.

Maatandosiris · 16/10/2023 15:06

Well done

SurprisedWithAHorse · 16/10/2023 15:27

I'm cautiously optimistic. We still don't have an answer as to how many blatantly antisemitic posts a poster is allowed to make before being banned. At the moment, based on posters in threads elsewhere, the number would appear to be at least 3. They're still here.

I hope it goes well.

BeginningToLookALotLike · 16/10/2023 17:52

Thank you.

I reported a post by FairyLights who spread fake news about 6000 bombs in one day which Mumsnet deleted.

This morning I've found the whole thread hidden which is usually what happens when they're getting hammered with facts in the form of links, screenshots, actual statements, etc. It just degenerates after that.

For one reason and one only - to try to ensure most people no longer see their distortions or rebuttal posts. It's predictable.

A Jewish community section will be important for collecting Jewish experiences, imo.
