Jewish Mumsnetter Section

Asthebellcurves · 14/10/2023 14:43

I was asked by Mumsnet to start a post here to request a Jewish Mumsnetter section. This request comes out of a thread where Jewish people were discussing ethnic and religious identities that was then co-opted by others refusing to provide space for those conversations. Thus illustrating the need for a distinct Jewish space on here. Of course, Jewish conversation and contribution is valuable across mumsnet, but a neat space for Jewish perspectives to be protected and valued is a great addition - just as Black, South Asian, Welsh, Irish and Scottish mumsnetters have and benefit from.

”When it comes to starting new boards, we're pretty much guided by what our users want. The Black Mumsnetters, SE Asian MNers, Craicnet, etc came about because users started threads requesting their own space. We'll certainly give consideration to a Jewish Mumsnetters section if there is demand. You're quite welcome to start a thread in Site Stuff to ask if others feel the same.”

I know many of us have felt very hurt by the moderation of Mumsnet this week, as anti semitic posters have been allowed to run wild while many factual comments that are supportive of the Jewish community have been deleted. I hope this may serve as an opportunity for Mumsnet to build much needed bridges.

Not Jewish but I support the need for a space for Jewish women

Liking80 · 14/10/2023 15:05

Posting to add my voice to this. It's important to have a safe space to discuss our feelings.

ValuableLimeLesson · 14/10/2023 15:06

Also not Jewish, and also disgusted by the open antisemitism on here. Jewish MNers should have their own space, 100%.

SeaToSki · 14/10/2023 15:07

Im not Jewish but absolutely support the idea.

The amount of whataboutery, co-opting, antisemitism and thread hijacking has been awful. I would love to learn more about Judaism by lurking on threads and think that a specific (and hopefully safer) space is definitely needed for those that wish to actively post

manilafiller · 14/10/2023 15:09

Another not Jewish but utterly agree

MrsMitford3 · 14/10/2023 15:10

I'm not Jewish but have some close family by marriage etc who are.

Agree with @SeaToSki the whataboutery is to derail threads and not allow a free conversation.

Much needed @MNHQ please!!!

LoveLabradors · 14/10/2023 15:11

I am not Jewish and rarely venture beyond the usually gentle spaces of style and property/ home decor on Mumsnet as it often is so unpleasant. But I have been horrified at the abhorrent anti Jewish sentiment on MN and the attempted justification for some of the most barbaric crimes ever seen last Saturday on here. Sadly it feels the green light has been given for lavish anti semitism and I am appalled.

No1MumPendant · 14/10/2023 15:11

Also not Jewish but support this.

The casual anti-semitism is appalling on MN, as it is in wider society. At least give Jewish women a space where they can have pertinent conversations without aggressive de-railing and discrimination.

Maireas · 14/10/2023 15:12

Antisemitic incidents have increased in the UK over the last week, and it's not acceptable to have any community in this country becoming more fearful.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 14/10/2023 15:13

I'm not Jewish but so much anti-semiticism is being allowed I don't understand it and fully support a jewish group

LadyHag · 14/10/2023 15:13

I'm not Jewish but I fully support this.

25milesfromhome · 14/10/2023 15:13

Yes please.

Zonder · 14/10/2023 15:13

Interested in this. Particularly in the concerns about antisemitism on here. I've seen lots of posts in support of Palestinian civilians - is that what people mean, or has there been something different going on?

Validus · 14/10/2023 15:14

I support this.

TeenDivided · 14/10/2023 15:14

I'm not Jewish but I support this too.

Maireas · 14/10/2023 15:15

No, @Zonder . It's different. It is perfectly possible to be supportive of the Palestinians situation, and any innocent victims, yet not descend to antisemitic posts.

Zonder · 14/10/2023 15:15

Totally agree @Maireas - just wondering what is meant. I've only been on a couple of threads that could be relevant.

Dillane · 14/10/2023 15:16

Sensible idea

StillProcrastinating · 14/10/2023 15:17

Not Jewish, sad it’s needed, fully support. Please can mumsnet up the moderation. It’s so important at times like this. It’s not censorship. It’s stopping unacceptable and factually incorrect statements. It’s like we’re sleeping walking into chaos. I could never understand how the nazis took power. I can now.

GentlemanJack · 14/10/2023 15:17

Yes please. I am Jewish and reading some of the posts yesterday sickened and horrified me. I wasn't exactly surprised though.

doubleshotcappuccino · 14/10/2023 15:18

How is this even a problem? Of course this should be set up

SadlyACupOfTeaDoesNotSolveEverything · 14/10/2023 15:19

A very reasonable request.

Maireas · 14/10/2023 15:19

Zonder · 14/10/2023 15:15

Totally agree @Maireas - just wondering what is meant. I've only been on a couple of threads that could be relevant.

Oh, I see. I've been on quite a few over the last week, some are ok, and it's fine to discuss current affairs, but some posters, in my opinion, were offensive.

Sinamin · 14/10/2023 15:19

This definitely gets my vote, I was just thinking yesterday as I was reading various threads that it would be a great idea.

BeckyAMumsnet · 14/10/2023 15:20

Thanks @Asthebellcurves we will have a discussion about the board.

Please also report any posts that you think we ought to see. As a post-moderated site, we may not be aware of something unless it is reported. Thanks, everyone.
