Pregnant people?! It's 'women'

BIWI · 19/09/2023 14:57

Two links to surveys today, from Kings College London and Cardiff University. Both surveys wanting to speak to 'pregnant people'.

It's women who get pregnant and give birth. Male members of our society are unable to conceive, grow and birth babies.

Please, please, please - why are you accepting these requests? Do you not read them first? (Especially seeing as you allow them to post their links for free).

I'm appalled that Mumsnet is now complicit in erasing the word 'woman'.

Where did your identification with the gender of woman come from if it wasnt socially constructed?

From your lady brain, or from your special gendered soul?

I don't identify with any gender at all.

I have been female since conception and I will die female

And "woman" is not a socially constructed gender identity, it's the word for a human of the female sex.

AliOlis · 19/09/2023 18:33

This is because the person is female (material sex) and not because they are a woman (socially constructed gender)
Why are you happy to make an absolute fool of yourself telling women that a woman is a socially constructed gender? It's fascinating, in a really weird way.
What possessed you?!

NutellaEllaElla · 19/09/2023 18:38

Woman is not a dirty word. How misogynist.

Woman is not a gender. "Lady brain" and "special gendered soul" are bollocks.

I do not identify with the gender of woman, I just am a woman. Because I was born one.

Right now I am wearing a plaid work shirt, jeans and redwings. I have short hair and no make-up. How am I identifying with the gender of woman in a socially constructed way? What nonsense.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 19/09/2023 18:38

Pregnant people suggests that there are those in addition to women/females that can be pregnant. Which we all know is bollocks regardless of 'identification'.

That is why 'pregnant people' can get in the bin. Language is important. People tie themselves up in knots trying to be soooo inclusive but just make themselves look like misogynistic fools in the process.

Sueretiredawhileago · 19/09/2023 18:38

Hear hear. Mumsnet should not be supportive the eradication of the very people they set out to support

Ereshkigalangcleg · 19/09/2023 18:44

It's not a "gender" and "identifying" with it is just a name for knowing which sex you are, of the two. Gender itself is socially constructed, but a woman is an adult female human, it's simply the name we give to it, like a mare is an adult female horse. Gender" is a framework entirely based on stereotypes and expectations of the two biological sexes. It can't exist without them.

Female and woman are sex

Feminine is gender

We don't see 'people with prostate cancer', men have this type of cancer, no need to confuse the issue, is there?

Yet if someone goes down the route of insisting on pregnant people, then people with prostate cancer should be mandated too, because transwomen who have not had surgery will still have prostates.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 19/09/2023 18:47

13 year old pregnant person.

Girl. Not "person". Don't pretend that's why this language is adopted.

People who have male-to-female gender-reassignment surgery retain a prostate.

I welcome the term "pregnant people" because it is shit being a pregnant woman. Personhood should be centred first and foremost at a time when that person is physically, financially and emotionally vulnerable.

Because those "people" are women and girls. Join the dots.

newhere24 · 19/09/2023 17:22

Women are people. So people is inclusive. Are you seriously saying that women are not people????

^ That.

The whole of my feminism has been based around the fact that female people are people.

People get pregnant.
People have abortions
People give birth

Human rights includes the full range of human's capacities, including gestation and birthing. Human rights should not be restricted to only those rights which matter to non-female people.

Human rights includes the full range of human's capacities, including gestation and birthing.

Welcome to logic by catch phrase!

males get to pick if and/or how the gestation and birthing happens.👏

Human rights should not be restricted to only those rights which matter to non-female people.

Great, You have just sucessfully halved the stats for deaths of people engaged in growing and/or birthing new humans!

Go you!

However while you are cheerleading for 100% of the population how about spending 50% of that time on the issues which only effect 50% of the population

Women need women's rights because they are not men

People Only women get pregnant.
People Only women have abortions
People Only women give birth

And if you think being a pregnant woman is shit imagine how great it will be to be a breeder person.👍

Potential breeders who face discrimination will be so thankful to be reclassed from women to bleeders and non-breeders👍

SoundTheSirens · 19/09/2023 18:50

If you’re spouting bollocks about “woman” being a “socially constructed gender” you’re no feminist, no matter how much you might try to identify as one.

GoodOldEmmaNess · 19/09/2023 18:51

This is because the person is female (material sex) and not because they are a woman (socially constructed gender).

The term 'woman' doesn't come to mean 'socially constructed gender' just because a few fifth-rate academic texts and over-excited undergraduates decide to legislate that new definition on behalf of the rest of us.
'Woman' means 'adult human female', like it always did. 'Feminine' is the term for the socially constructed gender - you cn backform a noun from that. 'Woman' is taken.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 19/09/2023 18:51

It's been explained in detail why many women have an issue with it. All "pregnant people" are women and girls. It's alienating, gaslighting language. Why don't the feelings of women and girls without special identities matter?

RedRosie · 19/09/2023 18:52

Please MN HQ, take these down.

If there's one place on the internet that women are allowed to exist, it should be here.

That's just great. Presumably your support for the social justice claims of other disadvantaged groups are also based on the fact that they are people, so let's just progressively dismantle the language we have for naming each of these groups so that we can advocate on their behalf without the shamefully regressive tactic of naming them.

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 19/09/2023 17:54

Why mention anti-gay, racist and right wing?

Because only bad people want to keep the two sex classes that humans have to describe sexual reproduction in humans

Subtext:
[Gay men should do mangina, lesbians should do girl dick]
[Black women are the same as a human with a penis]
[Only Left wing people are good people]

Bla bla and any other foolish points that are TRA talking points.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 19/09/2023 19:02

Female people are people. Male people are people. The reason we need feminism, or women's liberation if you prefer, is because for much of human history women have been treated as second-rate humans, subservient to men, often considered as defective, ridiculously overcomplicated variants on the perfect version of the human form, i.e. the male. Annoyingly, these weak creatures are the only ones capable of gestation, birth and making milk to feed a baby. So we are tolerated, but not always credited with any intelligence or resilience or capacity to do anything very much except pander to the male, do the cleaning and cooking, and bring up the children. It's taken generations of women working tirelessly to get away from this nonsense. And it's taken just a few short years of gender ideology to put all of that into reverse.

@actualpuffins

What I would say is while I have some concerns over male bodied people being allowed to be in female only spaces, I am dismayed to see how the right wing anti-gay, misogynistic, racist, PC gorn mad types have managed to recruit people who would never be racist etc in their lives to be transphobic and go on about women being erased because of the use of a word.

It's not right wing to object to being defined as fluffy pink ladybrain, which is the logical consequence of allowing the term woman to become about gender souls rather than sex. In fact, right wingers are quite likely to agree with the trans lobby on this point - the only difference bring that to right wingers, ladybrain inescapable follows from being born female. I think you underestimate the extent to which many actively gender non conforming women on here resent being forced into a femininity box just because we're born female.
