Adverts with sound

What fresh new hell is this?

Am on an iPad (Safari browser). Am now getting adverts on the right-hand bar playing with bloody sound/video. Please make it stop.

I may well be an “outlier”, but more forced advertising is going to drive people away, not encourage them to look at said adverts. I can’t even tell you what the advert is for - my only instinct was to hit the pause button to make it shut up!

It’s still happening. Annoying and intrusive. Tonight it’s Amazon books.

Happened to me just now, it's really annoying. I don't want sound, I use MN at DC bedtime!

We're so sorry that these noisy ads have cropped up again for several of you. The more details we have, the more likely we'll be able to stop them, so can you please let us know which device and browser you're using, and the thread or topic you're on when they start playing.

If it's possible to grab a screenshot of the advert and a link to the place it takes you when you click it, that would be a huge help.

Every time I get it the advert is for Sky Broadband and it just starts playing when you scroll past it and is hard to get stop. After a while the advert with switch to a non-noisy one. The video doesn’t appear to have a link.

But if I hear the words Sky Broadband again I’m going to install an adblocker because it’s just unacceptable to have auto playing adverts.

Still happening. Why can’t you make it stop? Surely you are in control of your own systems?!

I think you just don’t want to do anything about it as having adverts automatically playing gets peoples attention (and keeps them off the site altogether in my case). You’ve had plenty of information.
I’ll repeat what I said already -
ipad, chrome and safari (happens on both), won’t take you anywhere when the ad is playing because you can’t stop or interrupt it, takes you to amazon or sky afterwards. I’ve provided plenty of screenshots above.

To keep asking more more info when there are scores of posts on here saying the same thing is ridiculous. It’s completely unacceptable to have ads auto playing with loud sound and the only way to stop it is to close down MN. Which is what I do every single time, meaning I’m rarely on here more than 5 mins nowadays.

Have been annoyed by this for some days now. Horrible.
There’s one ad with spooky, whispery voices that is distinctly unsettling. I’ve had to turn the sound off on my iPad, and then turn it on again to do other things eg watch Netflix.
Please stop these ads!

Hi all

We still haven't managed to replicate this yet, so we wondered if anyone would be able to try the following for us. It will really help us track down what's going on here.

Preparation

1. Go to any web page in your browser and create new bookmark, save it somewhere so it's easy to find/click
2. Once created, Right click the bookmark and select Edit
3. Replace the URL with "javascript: googletag.openConsole()" Then save!
4. You have now created your "Bad ads button"!

Take action

1. You see a bad or broken ad on mumsnet site
2. Locate and Left click the new bookmark
3. Screenshot the ad with the Overlay (PC = Win+Shift+S // Mac = CMD+Shift+4)
4. Send it to us!

I was just listening to "My Tears Ricochet" which sadly got interrupted by a Daz advert.

Just happened again. Had forgotten to turn the sound off after something I was doing earlier.

Sorry, I’m not going through the stages above. Get the tech team to sort it out. It’s really not believable that no one can replicate this. It’s really not a good look to tell your users to take the above action to “maybe” sort out a problem. The onus is on your tech team to find and resolve the issue.

As an aside, I don’t get the obsession with advertising. Maybe I’m an old git now, but I’ve never been influenced by adverts - doesn’t matter whether they’re in print, on tv or on sites like this. They have the opposite effect to what I think they’re meant to have!

Tonight I was enjoying Dear John (Taylors Version) which was rudely cut off by an Amazon books advert.

It pisses me off that I get 30 seconds of a podcast then one of these ads cuts in and completely stops the podcast and I have to go and search for it again and restart it only for another ad to cut in a minute later.

Still no response Mumsnet? It’s been 36 hours since I took the screenshot for you. Are you too busy faffing with the edit button?
