Adverts with sound

What fresh new hell is this?

Am on an iPad (Safari browser). Am now getting adverts on the right-hand bar playing with bloody sound/video. Please make it stop.

I may well be an “outlier”, but more forced advertising is going to drive people away, not encourage them to look at said adverts. I can’t even tell you what the advert is for - my only instinct was to hit the pause button to make it shut up!

HebeMumsnet · 12/07/2023 11:11

Hi there @Furries . That does sound annoying. Can you send us a link to the page you were on when you saw it, and if you can, click on the ad so you can send us a url to it? As soon as we can track it down we can look into it. Thank you!

@HebeMumsnet it’s still happening this morning. Here’s a screenshot - clicking on the ad took me to Amazon.

Can we confirm this advert played audio prior to clicking, and please could you paste the direct URL to where the ad takes you? It's going to be a bit tricky to locate from the screenshot as it's an ad choices ad!

LilyMumsnet · 13/07/2023 10:59

Thank you for the link!

We're on this now and we're looking for a fix ASAP.

Can we ask that you clear your cache in the meantime? We think this may prevent it from popping up in the meantime.

LilyMumsnet · 18/07/2023 15:40

@sorrynotathome sorry to hear this. Can you let us know what device and browser you're using, and can we have a screenshot of the advert and a link to the place it takes you when you click it?

JoMumsnet · 28/07/2023 09:01

Thanks for posting those screenshots, @sorrynotathome - we're taking a look now. Sorry for any inconvenience in the meantime.

And thanks for posting the link, @BestIsWest - are you still seeing these ads?

JoMumsnet · 28/07/2023 11:13

Thanks very much, @BestIsWest - which thread did that one pop up on?

JoMumsnet · 01/08/2023 10:29

Oh @Furries, we're really sorry you're still being blasted with these (blasted) ads Sad

We've raised this with the MediaTrust (who help track down bad ads) as we've been struggling to reproduce or find the culprit with these ads on tablets.

On the plus side, @Bumply - we have managed to track down the ad you flagged and have now blocked it. It's much easier to find rogue ads on the app, apparently - whereas the desktop site is more of a wild west...

We'll hopefully have some positive news for the rest of you before long. Thanks again for bearing with us.

JoMumsnet · 01/08/2023 11:07

Afraid we can't offer you even an old Tom Cruise, Furries!

We don't blame you for turning the volume off for now, though. We'll let you know as soon as it's safe to turn it back on.

HebeMumsnet · 09/08/2023 09:12

Morning, everyone. Thanks for your patience on this. We are working hard on tracking the problem down but as yet haven't managed to find the issue. We will get there, but this one is taking a little time unfortunately. As soon as there's any news we will update here.

JoMumsnet · 18/08/2023 11:14

We're so sorry that these noisy ads have cropped up again for several of you. The more details we have, the more likely we'll be able to stop them, so can you please let us know which device and browser you're using, and the thread or topic you're on when they start playing.

If it's possible to grab a screenshot of the advert and a link to the place it takes you when you click it, that would be a huge help.

Thanks in advance.

LilyMumsnet · 22/08/2023 18:58

Hi all

We still haven't managed to replicate this yet, so we wondered if anyone would be able to try the following for us. It will really help us track down what's going on here.

Preparation

  1. Go to any web page in your browser and create new bookmark, save it somewhere so it's easy to find/click
  2. Once created, Right click the bookmark and select Edit
  3. Replace the URL with "javascript: googletag.openConsole()" Then save!
  4. You have now created your "Bad ads button"!
Take action
  1. You see a bad or broken ad on mumsnet site
  2. Locate and Left click the new bookmark
  3. Screenshot the ad with the Overlay (PC = Win+Shift+S // Mac = CMD+Shift+4)
  4. Send it to us!

@LilyMumsnet I have some screenshots - how do you want me to send them?

Can you please email them to [email protected] FAO Lily?
