Adverts with sound

What fresh new hell is this?

Am on an iPad (Safari browser). Am now getting adverts on the right-hand bar playing with bloody sound/video. Please make it stop.

I may well be an “outlier”, but more forced advertising is going to drive people away, not encourage them to look at said adverts. I can’t even tell you what the advert is for - my only instinct was to hit the pause button to make it shut up!

@HebeMumsnet youve been asking lots of detailed questions on this thread for several weeks, but has your tech team or your advert/marketing team been able to resolve this problem please.

Its really intrusive and quite frankly offputting from a user experience perspective going onto your site and suddenly having music randomly inflicted on us.

The advert sound needs to be disabled and default to silent just like every other commercial site with adverts on, so if you choose to run it with the sound on, you click the sound on. It's awful.

sorrynotathome · 30/07/2023 07:40

Just happened again. The advert sound kicks in and I can’t mute it but I’ve realised I can pause the advert. Very annoying though.

Pepperama · 30/07/2023 07:53

Happening in this very thread, please can you take this seriously and sort it. Makes Mumsnet unusable because I scroll at night but it wakes folk up if it starts blaring. I have iPhone settings on stop auto play but it doesn’t touch it.

daisychain01 · 31/07/2023 06:10

I've come to the conclusion the advert needs to be taken off and permanently ban the advertiser the MN carousel, just like the other problematic ones have been in the past. When it gets to the stage where I don't want to use MN anymore, because of one advert, that says something! @HebeMumsnet please come back with and update?

daisym00n · 31/07/2023 07:34

I’ve just had an advert for this product start playing https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0B1VGKP5T/ref=syn_sd_offsite_desktop_50?ie=UTF8&psc=1&sp_csd=d2lkZ2V0TmFtZT1zZF9vZmZzaXRlX2Rlc2t0b3A&tag=dradisplay0bb-21 on this thread https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/relationships/4859590-marriage-issues-leading-to-friend-issues but it’s almost every other thread at the moment.

I’m using Safari on an iPad. The advert always shows that it’s on mute but the x over the loudspeaker icon doesn’t work if you try to toggle the sound on or off.

Bumply · 31/07/2023 08:31

Using the app on iPhone 14.
I didn't click on the ad, but it has an irritating pinging sound that only goes away if I quit Mumsnet and open the app again.

Very loud Transformers ad on Active Threads right now, and you can’t click on either pause or volume off symbols 😩

Furries · 31/07/2023 13:37

I remember watching a film years ago - I think it was Minority Report.

At some point, main character is involved in a chase scene through streets and a shopping centre. I remember loads of digital ads on walls, all of them blasting out their advertising message. I thought “jeez, imagine being blasted with that when you’re going about your day”.

That’s kind of how I feel now!

Oh @Furries, we're really sorry you're still being blasted with these (blasted) ads Sad

We've raised this with the MediaTrust (who help track down bad ads) as we've been struggling to reproduce or find the culprit with these ads on tablets.

On the plus side, @Bumply - we have managed to track down the ad you flagged and have now blocked it. It's much easier to find rogue ads on the app, apparently - whereas the desktop site is more of a wild west...

We'll hopefully have some positive news for the rest of you before long. Thanks again for bearing with us.

Furries · 01/08/2023 10:56

@JoMumsnet - thanks for the update. I wouldn’t mind as much if younger Tom Cruise was thrown in with it!

Just fyi, I won’t be able to update with any other adds as I’ve just turned the volume off on my iPad. Good luck with finding the issue.

JoMumsnet · 01/08/2023 11:07

Afraid we can't offer you even an old Tom Cruise, Furries!

We don't blame you for turning the volume off for now, though. We'll let you know as soon as it's safe to turn it back on.

Tom Cruise Goose GIF by Top Gun

I’ll accept the Top Gun soundtrack for 24 hours 🤣

This is still happening. Are you actually doing anything about it @LilyMumsnet ?

MissMuffetisin · 08/08/2023 22:43

It’s getting worse ! Loads of random noisy adds - although the speaker symbol on the ad has a cross next to it. Including this thread .

HebeMumsnet · 09/08/2023 09:12

Morning, everyone. Thanks for your patience on this. We are working hard on tracking the problem down but as yet haven't managed to find the issue. We will get there, but this one is taking a little time unfortunately. As soon as there's any news we will update here.

Waxlyrically · 09/08/2023 21:16

This has just started for me today on safari. It keeps making me jump! It’s very annoying.

SleepyMathematician · 11/08/2023 04:47

Same here, it keeps on happening to me and pressing the sound icon on the ad makes no difference. I keep jumping out of my skin and have largely stayed off of Mumsnet the last week because I can’t bear it. Will send a screenshot next time it happens but it’s constant. I’m on iPad with chrome.

SleepyMathematician · 11/08/2023 16:45

This is the most recent advert that’s done it. Clicking on it didn’t take me anywhere, weirdly, and clicking on the sound button never turns the sound off.

SleepyMathematician · 11/08/2023 23:22

It’s happened over and over tonight and they’re all taking me to amazon.
the most recent one took me to an ad preferences page on amazon.
i can’t do this any more, especially not at night. Many of the ads have loud fighting noises and are totally inappropriate to suddenly come on when you have children asleep nearby. Sort this out, mumsnet. Your site is unusable like this.
below is where it’s taking me to if I manage to successfully click on it ( mostly it’s unresponsive, just keeps playing)

LindseysDoily · 13/08/2023 15:23

Just found this thread. Its been happening to me for a couple of weeks now.
Really really annoying. It is amazon ad. Loud, blaring music. Please can you fix or I’ll have to stop visiting.

LindseysDoily · 13/08/2023 15:25

Ok, and again. Ad for Revival.

SoosanCarter · 13/08/2023 22:53

It’s really annoying. Wakes up the cat

WelshNerd · 15/08/2023 23:27

Adverts with sound are annoying for me because I listen to music whilst I browse. Whenever I'm in a thread with a auto play advert, my music player cuts out. My epic Taylor swift playlist keeps getting interrupted.

BestIsWest · 16/08/2023 10:00

After a peaceful week without them, they are back with a vengeance today.

mum11970 · 16/08/2023 22:27

Does it constantly for me too. Drives me mad.
