What is this ‘You might also like’ clutter?

Hi MNHQ. Please just take it out. Or let me opt out of it? It looks a mess.

If here’s something that I might also like to read, I’ll find it by using the search function.
These suggestions are just encouraging the posting of the same points on multiple similar threads, and that will discourage healthy normal thread death.

It’s really distracting to look at visually, I really liked the uncluttered ‘clean’ MN format compared to other forums.

A thread from yesterday in The Litter Tray about a cat with an inoperable tumour is bringing up a recommendation for a thread in 'Life Limiting Illness' about someone's dying parent. I don't think threads in 'Life Limiting Illness' should be being recommended in other topics.

Beees · 16/11/2022 17:08

I find it much more rude when posters are rude to MNHQ and demand changes to what is a free site. Of course, feedback is important and MNHQ are generally pretty good at listening to users so I don’t think it’s necessary to be rude to the admins how some posters are

You do realise that some people pay for MN dont you? Are they entitled to complain because they pay for the site or do they have to put up and shut up too?

AlisonDonut · 16/11/2022 17:10

It is so so bad. Who the heck thought this was a good idea?

AutumnCrow · 16/11/2022 17:13

GoodnightGentleBoris · 16/11/2022 16:31

If it isn’t a site that you want to or can use, alternative sites are available!

God no really??!

barskits · 16/11/2022 17:20

Tweaking?

The only thing that needs tweaking is the 'off' button.

daisychain01 · 16/11/2022 17:23

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/11/2022 09:04

Agreed, how on earth is this going to encourage good mental health? It's had enough when people feel compelled to look this stuff up, but now you are literally shoving it in front of people.

Absolutely dreadful for MH and perpetuating fear, how is that consistent with MN being a supportive parenting website/forum?

and if there are Russian bots spreading misinformation and lies, then this widget is spreading it around like poison.

AutumnCrow · 16/11/2022 17:33

Maybe we should start a load of really boring threads and all join with 'yeah', 'nah', so MNHQ gets its content-worth out of us.

We write the content. Many users pay.

MNHQ isn't a charity.

Saucery · 16/11/2022 17:35

Or just comment on the recommended Zombie threads with ‘.’ or ‘F’. Or a 👍.

WorldWideNomad · 16/11/2022 17:37

MsPinkMarshmallow · 16/11/2022 17:03

Just wanted to add to what everyone else is saying, it's a shit feature, please get rid of it.

This

AnApparitionQuipped · 16/11/2022 17:45

Or, if MNHQ believe some people like it, why not make it a customisable feature, that can be switched on or off?

SoupDragon · 16/11/2022 18:08

The simplest tweak would be to make it appear after the "add message" box rather than before.

I cant see how that would work, so even if everyone on this thread opted out the posters who didnt would still be bumping zombie threads into active.

ZeroFuchsGiven · 16/11/2022 18:31

It would depend how many opted out. If it does turn out the feature is hugely popular, aside from those of us on this thread who have expressed a dislike of it, you couldn't blame MNHQ for persisting with it really.

Sparklingbrook · 16/11/2022 18:54

We need a vote thread.

Whinge · 16/11/2022 18:59

Still no response from MN about why it's not on any of the site stuff threads?

Someone has made a deliberate decision to exclude this topic, but thought nothing of leaving suggestions on relationships, bereavement and other sensitive topics. Sad

MNHQ, you can tweak all you want, but it's clear how poorly thought out this new feature was and how little you care about your users.

They could make it opt in but they know nobody would go for it

JassyRadlett · 16/11/2022 19:06

I noticed this today. Explains why 'threads I'm on' has become totally unusable with all the old/dead threads that have suddenly been bumped up.

Really, really dislike it. Why promote stuff from months ago before active stuff?

I've mentioned twice now that a thread about a cremation is appearing as a 'you may like' on a thread about 'The Great British Bake Off' and it's still there about six hours later.

saraclara · 16/11/2022 20:47

I honestly don't see the benefit of this feature. Mumsnet is basically a real time chat board where people ask advice about something that's happening now, in real time. Most of us aren't looking for a particular subject, we're just chatting when people bring in their latest news or issue to the board. We're not looking for a subject were just listening and responding to whatever comes up.

The feature seems to just go by thread title. So this is what I get when I read the thread about whether someone was rude to their colleague. I mean, what on earth is the benefit of suggesting other threads that just happen to have 'rude' in their otherwise unenlightening titles?

ChatterMonkey · 16/11/2022 21:07

Just seen this feature, and came straight here to ask wtf??

Its awful, clunky, insensitive and completely unnecessary...

AgathaMystery · 16/11/2022 21:11

Agh please make it go away!!

unfortunateevents · 16/11/2022 21:39

Who is this "feature" supposed to help? If someone wants to start a thread about a topic, either they will do a search beforehand to see if there is a similar (and recent!) thread about the topic or they will just create the thread. Once the thread is running, they will respond to people who are posting on that thread, having a "threads you might like" stuck on the bottom of the page is pointless for them because they are already getting current, tailored responses on their own thread. People who respond on the thread don't care about "Threads you might like" because they are responding to the OP, they are not interested that someone had a similar issue three months ago.

Also, whenever someone does do a search on an old thread and posts a question on the bottom they are invariably - and correctly - told that posters won't realise that the thread has a new question/direction and that they should start a new thread. Occasionally someone doesn't realise there is a new post and answers the original, now months-old question, until a few posts later someone realises it is a zombie. By which time, the thread is in trending!

Why on earth has MNHQ released such a half-baked idea, what is the point, take it down until you have made your "tweaks"!

unfortunateevents · 16/11/2022 21:42

The Christmas bargains thread is currently recommending the previous threads from September and October! Most of those bargains last a day or at best a week - who are those recommendations supposed to help?!

paranoidmumdroid1 · 16/11/2022 21:54

This at the bottom of a Black Mumsnetter thread - not about S&B about being Black!

What is this ‘You might also like’ clutter?
BIWI · 16/11/2022 21:57

FFS!

@LilyMumsnet @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet if you didn't want any more proof, this is yet more that this algorithm is far too crude.

It makes you look insensitive - at best. Very foolish at worst.
