What is this ‘You might also like’ clutter?

PalatineHill · 15/11/2022 14:07

Hi MNHQ. Please just take it out. Or let me opt out of it? It looks a mess.

If here’s something that I might also like to read, I’ll find it by using the search function.
These suggestions are just encouraging the posting of the same points on multiple similar threads, and that will discourage healthy normal thread death.

It’s really distracting to look at visually, I really liked the uncluttered ‘clean’ MN format compared to other forums.

Agree completely. MNHQ are acting a small child being caught in a lie and instead of appologising and admitting their mistake they double down and start spouting rubbish to try and justify their angle.

It doesn't need to be tweaked, it just doesn't need to be there full stop.

No wonder MNs cost and outgoings are so high if they are splashing money on such unnecessary nonsense.

I think this new feature is a bit crap but I have no idea where people get off talking like this.

MN isn’t a small child to apologise to you, it’s an established business and forum that mostly takes on board the suggestions of users and is free to use.

As for “the site is unusable!!!”, no it isnt, it’s a bit inconvenient to scroll an extra click but doesn’t make it unusable

minipie · 16/11/2022 15:50

Another one saying please get rid.

Or if that’s not an option PLEASE can it be moved to underneath the posting box rather than above.

When I am using MN on my phone (I don’t use the app just the site) this new feature means I have to scroll down a long way to be able to post a reply. And half the time I cba, especially if phone is being a bit slow.

If others are the same, it’s losing you posts.

You do realise that MN aren’t providing the service out of the goodness of their hearts - it’s a business and we are the product. It’s not unreasonable to think they could spend a bit of time listening to what people actually want, or to take proper action when users point out how unsuitable a feature is for this site. Given that if we weren’t here they wouldn’t really have a business, as others have pointed out

I am waiting expectantly for the carpet fitter thread to resurface for the umpteenth time now.

Thank the lord that one actually got filled up and won't accept more posts 😁

Plenty more out there though!

MN are always saying that they can't do anything about zombie threads (when they absolutely can) and now they are actively encouraging them.

Appalling.

Ah no! I really liked that thread...
And the way it kept reappearing every year...without the need for a box saying "You might also like" 😂

TrashyPanda · 16/11/2022 15:59

nobody has asked MN to “tweak” this.

they’ve asked for it to be made optional or to be ditched.

the users do not like this function or it’s prominence.

why won’t you address why your are ignoring user feedback?

TrashyPanda · 16/11/2022 16:03

if it is such a great feature, then why not have it on Site Stuff?

if the reason is to assist users with searching, as stated above, then surely it would be beneficial on Site Stuff, which is where users post about issues?

FaazoHuyzeoSix · 16/11/2022 16:05

I agree it's awful. I resurrected a 2-month old thread (so only very mildly zombie) earlier today by accident because of this. I hadn't noticed the feature when I am browsing on my phone but today I am on my laptop and it's a lot more prominent.

BoobsOnTheMoon · 16/11/2022 16:26

Oh god it's awful, why the fuck did anyone think this was a good idea?!?

@LilyMumsnet @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet can you at least make it appear under the reply box? Please?

BoreOfWhabylon · 16/11/2022 16:27

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet @LilyMumsnet
It's a hard 'no' from me as well. I really can't understand why this unasked for and unwanted feature has been introduced. Especially now that the search function is working well.
Please get rid.

You don't understand why people talk like I did? It's simple, it's out of pure frustration that every bloody 'tweak' makes the site less user friendly.

We are the reason MN exists. We are their product and surely it's common bloody sense to listen to the people who make the site when they almost unanimously agree these so called upgrades are anything but. However time and time again MN show they don't actually listen and instead plow on regardless.

FaazoHuyzeoSix · 16/11/2022 16:31

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet @LilyMumsnet whatever "tweaks" you have put in place are not working. On this new thread started today the 5 "you might like this threads are:
1 from February 2022, 3 from August 2022 and 1 from a mere 3 weeks ago (where any advice given now is long past useless anyway). The whole thing is junk and it just going to lead to people wasting their time trying to help with problems that were resolved months ago!

If it isn’t a site that you want to or can use, alternative sites are available!

Beees · 16/11/2022 16:35

If it isn’t a site that you want to or can use, alternative sites are available!

Of course there are other sites for people to use and it's clear from the amount of posts since the last major update that many have chosen to use these other sites.

Nevertheless people don't actually want the site to close entirely and therefore offer criticism and alterative ideas yet when posters helpfully take time to give feedback which is constantly ignored it stands to reason people will get frustrated.

Itwasntevenblackpudding · 16/11/2022 16:36

I had to pop out to deal with something and there are loads more posts on this thread.

It's not appearing in "active" though.

Funny that!

Sound like the shit kind of manager that says "I'd you don't like, it get another job"

Itwasntevenblackpudding · 16/11/2022 16:41

It is in active now.

As you were.

TimBoothseyes · 16/11/2022 16:48

Maybe MNHQ might want to just take on board what happens when the people you want to use the service are unhappy with that service. The overwhelming majority neither like this function nor do they want it. Maybe they should look at whether they want to keep people using this site or they don't. Because right now it seems like they are not bothered either way which smacks of arrogance IMO.

As for the PP's comment "other sites are available" yes they are, just like there are lots of other clothes shops available if people don't want to shop in a particular place.....that ended well for Joules didn't it? If you want to keep people coming back give them what they want otherwise lose them forever.

Agree. ^

@GoodnightGentleBoris that is such a shitty comment, saying 'if you don't like it, just leave!' How rude. Hmm If something that was previously OK has gone to pot, then people have a right to complain, without being told 'well bog off somewhere else then!'

It's like when people complain on Twitter that one of their (previously) favourite TV shows is a bit crap now, there is ALWAYS someone who comes along and says 'don't watch it then!' Hmm People want it it improve and get better and be as good as when it started, and how it used to be. Not be told 'if you don't like it F-off!' Hmm

NadjaCravensworth · 16/11/2022 16:56

I don't hate it, but would like a 'first posted' (thread started) date clearly on the link

And maybe a restriction on started in last 6 months?

AnApparitionQuipped · 16/11/2022 16:58

The cremation thread is still being recommended on the Bake Off thread.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 16/11/2022 17:01

Just adding to what everyone else has said. I don't like this feature and I don't need it. It also doesn't work well. I start the Archers threads and the Archers spoiler threads, both in Radio Addicts. Every single thread currently recommended for me under the newest thread is one I started myself, months and months ago, each of which ran until it filled up and then I started a new one. Why would I want to look at them again? Even if I did, they're easily found. I imagine the same goes for many other long-running threads with a small group of posters contributing. Utterly pointless.

I'm also really shocked at some of the crass and insensitive links people have been confronted with, as mentioned above. Why didn't anybody realise this would happen? Didn't you test it?

MsPinkMarshmallow · 16/11/2022 17:03

Just wanted to add to what everyone else is saying, it's a shit feature, please get rid of it.

How dramatic, I wasn’t rude at all. Where did I tell people to F off? 🙄

I find it much more rude when posters are rude to MNHQ and demand changes to what is a free site. Of course, feedback is important and MNHQ are generally pretty good at listening to users so I don’t think it’s necessary to be rude to the admins how some posters are

AriettyHomily · 16/11/2022 17:05

Is it because they locked down new posters and now there is nothing new?
