What is this ‘You might also like’ clutter?

PalatineHill · 15/11/2022 14:07

Hi MNHQ. Please just take it out. Or let me opt out of it? It looks a mess.

If here’s something that I might also like to read, I’ll find it by using the search function.
These suggestions are just encouraging the posting of the same points on multiple similar threads, and that will discourage healthy normal thread death.

It’s really distracting to look at visually, I really liked the uncluttered ‘clean’ MN format compared to other forums.

Oh my god. That’s idiotic. Are you saying you’re happy with this then @HQ?!

This at the bottom of a Black Mumsnetter thread - not about S&B about being Black!

I'm cringing on Mumsnet's behalf.

I’m sure black MNs who spent months arguing for their own space to post will be really happy that their experiences are on par with wearing black clothes FFS! Surely this shows why you can’t just remove a couple of the most sensitive boards from the algorithm - sensitive threads will appear throughout the whole of talk.

Surely MNHQ understand the sunk cost fallacy. Just because someone thought it was a good idea and you’ve spent time and money on it (although no where near enough time), it’s not a reason to continue flogging a dead horse.

KozmicBlue · 16/11/2022 23:00

It was so easy to predict what could happen.

There is no way an algorithm can be sensitive enough to avoid potentially inappropriate and offensive suggestions.

And I'd put money on mischief-makers creating threads just to see what nonsense gets suggested. It will be Mumsnet's equivalent to the Wikipedia game.

2bazookas · 16/11/2022 23:01

I don't like it and don't need it. Zombie threads don't need any encouragement.

TattiePants · 16/11/2022 23:03

I’m also pissed off that I wasted my time reporting so many zombie thread trolls last week. What was the point when MN are basically trolling themselves!

AutumnCrow · 16/11/2022 23:06

And MNHQ are letting this happen also in Elderly Parents and with OCD / Anxiety threads.

MissMarpleRocks · 16/11/2022 23:25

Just voicing I’m not keen either.

Newlifestartingatlast · 17/11/2022 00:22

Your algorith is still causing lots of frustration of zombie threads
the “ you might like this” may be a good intent for boards where old info on things like childcare, divorce process etc , but for debate, conversation, peoples individual problems, a the “ might like” merely resurrects zombie threads where the issue is long over, past it’s sell by, or other events taken over in the world.

It’s a waste of time directing peopl to them. What’s the point of reading about someone’s dramatic issue, or even parking diagram if it was 3 years ago - no one is interested except if they don’t notice it’s 3 years ago.

please just make it stop. Nothing was broken and you didn’t need to “ fix” anything by doing this.

maybe think about your intent- if it is to direct people to threads where there is useful older info. - how about highlighting these somewhere with a star system users can add ( “likes?)

MadelineUsher · 17/11/2022 02:05

Just when the forums are being spammed with zombie threads, MN decides to create their own plethora of ancient threads! Every one I have clicked on idly has been several months if not 11 months old.

It is also stuffing the threads I'm on function - which was much better when the threads dissolved and vanished from the list after a few days; unlike now, when they hang about in perpetuity, and bob up to the top a year later when someone posts on a zombie, and have to be hidden...

vodkaredbullgirl · 17/11/2022 04:55

Needs sorting out, seeing threads, from beginning of the year and people still replying. Although OP only posted the one time.

SuperCamp · 17/11/2022 06:01

Active Convos full of pointless out of date threads from several months ago.

It’s like being in a dentists waiting room surrounded by out of date magazines.

There is NO POINT to anyone being directed to a thread about someone’s lunch date from 4 months ago. Just silly. The event is long gone, there is no ‘information’ that might be useful.

You are killing your site, MNHQ.

SuperCamp · 17/11/2022 06:15

3 of 5 threads in ‘trending’ are pointlessly revived out of date threads.

Whinge · 17/11/2022 06:40

You are killing your site, MNHQ.

I'm beginning to think this is their aim. Other than bringing back advanced search (which should never have been removed in the first place) all of the recent updates have been a backwards step, or in some cases several steps backwards.

There's no communication with users about the introduction of new features or site wide changes, they just happen, and often come with bugs or break other site features. This new feature is pointless on a site like MN, but are MN listening to the 100s of posters who have taken the time to say why they don't like it or discuss why it's problematic... No.

WhatTheHellIsAQuasar · 17/11/2022 07:07

maybe @mnhq are stuck in an endless loop of old threads. Or the lights went out and they couldn’t find their back here.

or maybe they’re just ignoring it. If they wait long enough people will forget about it.

Beees · 17/11/2022 07:11

It’s like being in a dentists waiting room surrounded by out of date magazines.

This is a great analogy. I've clicked on 8 threads this morning from active and all 8 of them are months or even years old! What's the point in even coming on to post and engage in threads if all the content isn't current.

I also agree if I didn't know any better I'd say it seems like MNHQ are actively looking for ways to make the site used less. However I genuinely don't think they are, I think they are just that clueless as shown time and time again and yet they will be the only ones surprised in a few months when they turn around and say hmm it's not working well any more any suggestions why? Hmm

I hope not. Apart from here & a cruise site (which I only go on if I’m about to go on a cruise) I don’t post anywhere else. I’d be lost without MN. Mind you I’d have more time on my hands!

Yes, all but one of my trending threads are old threads that have been ressurected. Interestingly this this thread isn't in trending... I wonder why that might be. 🙄

BlackCatTabbyCat · 17/11/2022 07:26

This is rubbish almost every thread I click on is old to the point I'm almost surprised when I click on one and it's new.

That's how I'm feeling this morning. I've found a total of 2 threads in active that are new and my response was genuine surprise.

Everything in trending is old and my active threads is now bogged down with threads that have been inadvertently resurrected because of the new feature.

I'm beginning to think last week was better when the trolls were purposely bumping the old threads at least active had some new content at that point.Hmm

ZeroFuchsGiven · 17/11/2022 07:35

There are posters giving advice to someone in active on a thread from may this year. A thread about someones new boyfriend pressuring them to have sex. This is so fucking insensitive.
