Dear MN Towers, could we consider moving the Buying and selling listings to a separate board?

That Accessorize jewellery thread highlights the problem nicely ! I can't beleive someone has just admitted buying a load of stuff off Ebay & then trying to sell it on here.

twospecialgirls · 17/01/2008 20:01

OMG how many time do i have to say i would happily pay the fees and no i dont think im taking the piss saying that i only use buy and sell just because i dont want to sit on here and tell my life story or bitch and moan
and i dont take advantage of anything

FrannyandZooey · 17/01/2008 20:07

"usually about 50% of the threads in active convos are sales threads"

I really don't feel that is true. I use active convos all the time, have nothing hidden, and as I say, it just doesn't bother me

southeastastra · 17/01/2008 20:07

it's nice to buy stuff off fellow mnetters you know too. i've bought stuff in the past. now don't bother looking. it's like wembley market on there.

FrannyandZooey · 17/01/2008 20:08

and while I can see it is annoying for people like sgk, her being a regular poster doesn't mean she has any extra rights or privileges to sell her stuff here, over and above any other punter who wants to sell something

Whizzz · 17/01/2008 20:11

OMG - I've just seen the thread that's selling off the contents of an actual market stall I thought it was a joke !

VictorianSqualor · 17/01/2008 20:12

Do you not think Franny? That people coming here purely for free use of a for sale board is underhand??

I just think it goes against the whole principal of it being free to sell if it's going to be used as a forum for free business.

PaulaYatesBiggestFan · 17/01/2008 20:12

thats it SEA its the sheer numbers of them - too too many and that;s what annoys me

Whizzz · 17/01/2008 20:13

it's just wrong that's still running a business even if it is winding it down

MillieMooMoo · 17/01/2008 20:15

Would it be better to have a For Sale section as such with sub forums with catagories, so it's easy to find something specific you're looking for,

i.e.

Baby Boys Clothes
Toddler Girls Clothes
Baby Toys
Toddler Toys
Nursery Furniture
Feeding Equipment

etc

Each person can then list in those what they have to sell under that catagory and would make things easier to find for buyers.

southeastastra · 17/01/2008 20:16

surely that post should be in small business ads whizzz

southeastastra · 17/01/2008 20:16

thread i mean

sparklygothkat · 17/01/2008 20:17

I am not saying I should have extra rights, but it used to be posters that we all knew that used the B&S, as it stands now, you have no chance to sell anything because there is 3-4 pages a day of for sale items...

off to pick up DS1 from youth club now anyway!

Whizzz · 17/01/2008 20:17

yes, I will have to post on it

FrannyandZooey · 17/01/2008 20:20

"That people coming here purely for free use of a for sale board is underhand??"

why? it isn't against the rules of MN, and MN allow it to happen - in fact i would imagine they like it as it must generate a lot of traffic

I know they try to crack down on businesses, and we can all help with that, but people coming on to flog their stuff is as much a part of what MN is about, as me wittering about vegetables, or someone asking for help with something major

one isn't more valid than the other - they are all legitimate ways of using the boards - ways that MN allows

southeastastra · 17/01/2008 20:23

it may be within mn rules but it isn't fair on regular posters who want to sell something.

SoupDragon · 17/01/2008 20:24

I always report Taking The P*ss for sale threads. It's why I don't hide the whole topic.

If I'm in a really foul mood, I'll search them out rather than just spot them in active convos

twospecialgirls · 17/01/2008 20:25

i agree franny it cant be underhand if its allowed and if its there to use y shouldnt people use it

Aitch · 17/01/2008 20:27

well, qoq says that of 50 threads she's counted over 20 sales threads at a time, and so have i, franny, so perhaps you're on at different times of the day from us.
i do think the issue of special privileges is key here. we're all members, right? we all should have the right to buy and sell? i can't buy because i can't read normal ads by normal women wanting to sell normal stuff.
it's all picturetrails and random shite that basically unless you're die-hard you simply don't have time to investigate.
skg, dg, qoq and others can't sell or pass on stuff because the threads are being bumped by serial traders.
so all we're asking is to be able to use the sale boards in the way they were intended, as it says at the top of the board, to pass on unused and unwanted goods. this is emphatically not the same as buying stuff on ebay and selling it on here with a sob story about how they need the money. that's taking advantage imo.

FrannyandZooey · 17/01/2008 20:28

"it may be within mn rules but it isn't fair on regular posters who want to sell something."

what? what are you on about? Should we count how many posts people have made that day and allocate them a score card? Regular or old timer posters don't have any more rights or privileges than anyone else - why should they?

Suggesting that people buying and selling are being unfair to regulars who might want to sell something, is like me saying "I don't like all these other chat threads on the board that some new people started, when I wanted everyone to read MY thread. It's not fair."

it's just a load of bollocks

FrannyandZooey · 17/01/2008 20:30

aitch I am not saying you or qoq are mistaken in that you may have seen that, but I am on here at all times of day except late at night, and it isnt the norm, at all

I agree there are legit ways to use the selling boards, but if we see people abusing them, then we can report them to MN, yes?

SoupDragon · 17/01/2008 20:31

By "regular" poster, most people simply mean one who isn'y just a Hun.

southeastastra · 17/01/2008 20:31

what am i on about, it's clear enough isn't it

Aitch · 17/01/2008 20:31

"Note: The For sale topic is intended for Mumsnet members to sell used or unwanted goods.
...
If you are a small business there is a Small Business classified topic where, for £30, you can advertise your company or products for 90 days."

nah, buying stuff on ebay and flogging it on here is bollocks and against the rules. and it goes on a lot, imho.
