Ideas for a black section on mumsnet.

Should we have separate sections i.e black hair and beauty, black parenting, black cooking or a general black section?

FWIW I'm beginning to no longer see these comments as derailing. They are such perfect examples of the crap we need to wade through just to have a basic experience like anybody else. Every couple of hours a parrot appears with their Afrophobic comments - StartingGrid literally joined the thread to call OP hostile. You literally can't make this stuff up.

Totally agree. Like I said it has really reduced the amount of explaining I've had to do. What is most telling is refusal to apologise and accept when they're wrong. We'll have to further discuss moderation in the morn! Clearly we may need to freeze threads overnight. Although nightwotcha and HQ are being amazing!

I think these comments should be left up for all to see them as they are.

EchoCardioGran · 13/09/2020 03:26

Off to bed. Take it easy out there!

NiteWotcha · 13/09/2020 03:29

will keep popping back here in any case!

@EchoCardioGran marrow peas - 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 this is exactly how I see the board. Serious topics, how do I type stuff, and frivolous stuff like ‘shit, have you seen this vid on making rice and (marrow) peas’.

@PatricksRum 💐. You’ve empowered me a bit, I’m in total awe at the bravery and strength you are showing.

Naysayers - all you e done is prove to Mumsnet that such a safe space is needed. Like relationships/lone parents/step parent LGBTQ/pets etc.

A ‘black’ board isn’t about only black people can post, or black people post over there. Like the disabled board the intention is one of support.

I spent YEARS on the infertility and miscarriage boards. A subgroup where people can get tailored and specific help be that a rant or advice. A black board is the same difference, and if you feel uncomfortable with that you really should be asking yourself why?

captainjacksparrow · 13/09/2020 07:38

I really want rice and peas now

Phoenix21 · 13/09/2020 07:38

A poster said - it scares me that some of these respondents could be my children’s teacher, my boss etc. Me too.

@PatricksRum when will the board be up, I have some questions that I’d like to ask.

Sorry my post is all over the gaff - can I vote for Black Perspectives again please? I think it’s more inclusive than black net, if I wanted to ask what frozen peas I should put into my rice, then BP looks more inviting then Black Net.

Im definitely up for a meeting (post Covid world) and I’m determined to help make this board work. I’m a firm believer in inclusivity, but I’m also aware that some groups need a safe space.

Oh and while I’m at it, I want to say thanks to all the allies here, I’m relieved to see so many people who may not be black who just ‘get it’. Or don’t really give a shite but are, cool go ahead. It restores my faith in society.

Kidney beans or marrow? 🤣🤣🤣

That quip has made my morning tbh.

captainjacksparrow · 13/09/2020 08:16

Not sure @Phoenix21, spoilt for choice now Grin

Is this an overseas Thread? why are the comments by OP only made after Midnight? 🌺

anewdispensation · 13/09/2020 09:08

@Phoenix21 I was the one who said this about the teachers etc and it really does scare me but the allies on this post gives me some hope.

Like you I am determined to make this board work as a safe space and also as a real tool of change. In real life I do work in helping black people progress at work and have access to all sorts of resources including employment lawyers who specialise in race discrimination cases and I think as a collective we can effect so much change.

I always say to my black friends that it is time for us as a people to organise and work to change outcomes for us and our children and for me that’s why @PatricksRum is a rockstar! This is a Masterclass in how you make change happen.

PersephonePromotesEquanimity · 13/09/2020 09:15

I have a thought for another potential topic!

A list of phrases used by people who are not black that immediately cause one to regret the very existence of humanity ...

Duppy.

EchoCardioGran · 13/09/2020 09:26

hmm technology is not my strong point.....Grin

NiteWotcha · 13/09/2020 09:29

Nice tune, Echo!

@BlueThistles this is not an "overseas" thread and the OP does not only post messages after Midnight

flyingsnozwanger · 13/09/2020 09:33

We do need a section for those from Africa and the diaspora. Just don't call it "black".

Why not?

Yes I know this song well, nice avoidance.

So Mumsnet aren't creating a Section then? if not why not ?

captainjacksparrow · 13/09/2020 09:54

Blue

Mumsnet are creating a section, they agreed already. The discussion was supposed to be about what topics were wanted, the name and how it should be moderated etc

But it keeps getting derailed...

captainjacksparrow · 13/09/2020 09:55

And I imagine the op isn’t posting every 5 minutes because she’s too busy banging her head against a brick wall... Wink
