Can you help us to improve the Mumsnet site?

Across this year we intend to make some improvements to features on Mumsnet talk with the aim of enhancing your experience of using the site. The first of which is to improve the functionality of the 'threads I'm watching' and bookmark features.

You might have used these features, or you may have no idea they even existed, either way we'd love it if you could complete this quick survey.

Any additional comments you want to add to this thread would also be welcome.

Thanks

Some sort of 'support ticket' type list where users can see the reports they've made to Mumsnet and the status of them, I.e. read, deleted, 'we have decided to leave this to stand because...' etc.
It'dbe really interesting to see the statistics for how MN is dealing with reports, as it seems to often take HOURS to receive any sort of acknowledgement on reports recently. It would also maybe mean people wouldn't need to keep re-reporting posts/threads not knowing whether the system is broken again and reports aren't being received.

Also, I'd like to see some consistency on emails from MNHQ, as some mods use their names in response so you know who you are speaking to, some only use MNHQ.
Maybe having the mods name in any deletion message on Threads I'm On would be good too.

Don't know if this has been suggested, but you could reduce sockpuppeting and also help those of us who namechange regularly by having a feature to lock individual users into one name per thread.

If you name change for a sensitive topic but want to keep posting on other threads you can get very mixed up with name changes.

If I understand how the database behind the postings work, it may be not too difficult to code in a "you have already posted on this thread as (name) so this post will be added as from that name" if someone is posting again after a name change.

Seeline · 07/02/2019 08:53

I hadn't realise the IOS app and android app were so different - having only used android. Why are we second class citizens - it seems those on Apple have a much-more user friendly experience.

Seeline · 07/02/2019 08:58

From the number of posts on here asking for the ability to highlight OP posts, and wishing thread would open up at the last point read, it would appear that many of us are completely unaware of how to make the best of MN - either on desktop, mobile or app modes.

  1. - everyone offers help and advice without making it clear that different modes operate in completely different ways eg I often see advice to 'click on the 3 dots at the top of the screen....' I don't have that on my android app.
2.- It needs to be much easier/obvioius to access the advice on customising (I don't appear to be able to customise my android app beyond the alterations I have made on the desktop which seem to feed through - eg highlighting OP posts)
browneyes77 · 07/02/2019 09:08

If I could make just one change to MN, it would be to add an Edit Post feature - even if you could only edit posts within 15 minutes of posting, and thereafter they'd be locked

Yes!! THIS!!

Also the option to delete our own posts rather than having to report them.

It would be good to have a function/option where you’re alerted whenever the original OP posts on a thread they’ve created that you’re watching. I’ve lost count of the amount of times I’ve checked a thread when a ‘new response’ email notification comes through, only to find pages of other people’s responses and the OP hasn’t been back in a long time.

An easier way to bold things etc if that’s possible. It gets tedious having to do the whole asterisk thing on every separate paragraph you want to highlight.

Better/more emoticons. The ones currently are very limited. There just isn’t many of them at all!

Faultymain5 · 07/02/2019 09:19

Any reason why, if you don't want to use an "agree" button (aka "like"), that you just don't use it. But give others the opportunity to use it if they want it. Options are good. don't see the point in I agree with Faulty taking up restricted post space.

ivykaty44 · 07/02/2019 09:21

Can we have a hidden threads for safety section - where you have to log in with your own password to view, even if you’re already logged on

wishingforalotterywin · 07/02/2019 09:27

Be able to hide topics from the app

heronsinflight · 07/02/2019 09:33

Just tried to complete the survey and got this message:

There was an error and there is no application layout in which to render it. The error reference is 352c27c50. Give this to the system administator and ask them to create at least one layout for system ID 1

LadyKalila · 07/02/2019 09:53

I'd like the ability to quote the username and thread to which I want to reply, in full easily, ie copy and paste it or have a reply button actually on every post.

Pascha · 07/02/2019 11:08

I just want to dismiss stickied threads from the mobile site when they aren't relevant or I've already looked at them. Its a right pain to swap to desktop view and zoom in on the hide buttons, then swap back to the mobile to carry on.

GreenandBlueButterfly · 07/02/2019 12:36

Stop the strike through option. People use it for entire paragraphs and it's a nightmare to read what's underneath when using a phone

SoupDragon · 07/02/2019 12:38

How about fixing Advanced Search rather than blithering on about "chasing tech" about it?

SoupDragon · 07/02/2019 12:41

TBH, the phrase "make some improvements" fills me with dread. It always goes wrong and there are weeks of people wailing about how they don't like it.

Foxyscarf · 07/02/2019 12:42

Just an android app that isn't shit would be nice

SoupDragon · 07/02/2019 12:43

Any reason why, if you don't want to use an "agree" button (aka "like"), that you just don't use it.

I think it looks like a "popularity" competition. Also, if there's a "disagree" button it's crap when people just click it and don't explain.

ReaganSomerset · 07/02/2019 12:46

I doubt people will be upvoting comments because they're friends with the poster. And there doesn't need to be a dislike button.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 07/02/2019 12:56

Just make the fricking site secure

Trumponerous · 07/02/2019 12:59

You used to have "floating" links to Active, I'm On and Watching (I think) . These were brilliant so you didn't have to scroll back up for ages on a long thread.

I'd love a customisable home page which means my favourite topics are right there, there are far too many topics and it is so laborious to find the one you want in the full list.

I use laptop with Firefox, Windows 10

I would like an easier quote function so that people replying to a much earlier comment without quoting make sense. If it seems an interesting point you've got to search for the original comment with cryptic name abbreviations or hunt through copious posts for the original snippet.

kirkandpetal · 07/02/2019 13:04

i find it frustrating to search for a subject, find a thread that looks like it would be ideal for what i'm after, only to discover it's an old chat thread, so has been deleted. Just don't return those threads back in a search please!

Trumponerous · 07/02/2019 13:08

And I agree with a PP that having deleted threads appear in Trending and Discussions of the Day is very irritating.

SoupDragon · 07/02/2019 13:08

I doubt people will be upvoting comments because they're friends with the poster.

That is absolutely the case on a particular forum.

SoupDragon · 07/02/2019 13:10

Instead of "making improvements" fix the stuff that is wrong!

The survey is about bookmarking. Why faff about with something that currently works OK (I think) instead of concentrating on the things that don't work.

ReaganSomerset · 07/02/2019 13:13

That is absolutely the case on a particular forum.

Which? I think mumsnet is too big for it to be an issue here- I recognise quite a few posters by username but don't agree with all their viewpoints and change my own username quite frequently. Also, people often have friends with the same viewpoints as themselves, so it may be that the similar viewpoints precede the friendship.

SoupDragon · 07/02/2019 13:29

I don't think it is important which.

Given the constant complaints about "royalty" and "Cliquiness" I think it is very naive to assume it wouldn't be the case on MN, or perceived that way.
