DD, DH, DP, GF, DS and all the others. I get common abbreviations like etc. Xmas but I feel like I need an entire map legend just to read a post. And if we can all write lengthy posts surely we can just write daughter or son? And why do we have to call them 'dear' anything? It pisses me off! So there! ;)

Maudlinmaud · 14/12/2017 08:50

You don't have to use them, some people think they're twee and unnecessary.
I have to stop myself using dd in real life. I'm not a fan of Xmas myself but don't complain about it.

Bluelonerose · 14/12/2017 08:51

It's the non common ones that throw me.
I'm normally 4 pages into a thread before I find out what it means Grin

LornaMumsnet · 14/12/2017 15:46

We'll just leave this here....

The abbreviations are part of MN and have been for a long time.

Many of them aren’t specific to MN and are used in other places online.

They really aren’t that hard to learn and you don’t have to use them yourself.

ArbitraryName · 14/12/2017 15:58

It’s all fine until you get ambiguity about whether the DF in question is the OP’s father or fiancé. Or the DS is the son or sister. The DF confusion, in particular, can produce some raised eyebrows.

SlowlyShrinking · 14/12/2017 16:03

I don’t mind them generally but dhamster and dfish etc do piss me off a bit

MsGameandWatching · 14/12/2017 16:07

Well tough! You have to use them, it says so in the legally binding contract they make you sign when you first join. Oh wait, that's bollocks and you don't have to use them at all so just...don't.

rachelracket · 14/12/2017 16:10

you'll get used to it.

otherwise, you may have more success irl.

MumGoneMild · 14/12/2017 16:11

U ok hun?

This thread happens monthly. MN is well into its second decade. We have a shared language. We are a community. Join in or don't.

Join in or don't. Indeed. All communities, online or offline, develop their own culture.

I will say out ,loud that I don't mind them at all, and I don't even notice them any more.

SauvignonBlanche · 16/12/2017 15:10

I have to stop myself saying them in RL Xmas Blush

SwedishEdith · 16/12/2017 15:12

What's wrong with Xmas?

cornishmumtobe · 16/12/2017 15:13

My favourite one is PFB ever since one poster confessed she thought it stood for Precious Fucking Baby (until someone told her otherwise) Grin

MyBrilliantDisguise · 17/12/2017 20:49

Oh me too! As for those who say ddog... Absolutely fucking crazy. Just use the initial ffs.

lalaloopyhead · 17/12/2017 20:56

DD1 is so much easier to type and read than 'my eldest daughter' surely? I like them and sometime think the abbreviations rather than the full words anyway iyswim?

I like them, and as pp has pointed out most are widely used and not exclusive to MN .

Goldenbug · 18/12/2017 19:45

Do many other people DATAOM? I quite LATAOM as it saves so much time.
