I'll say it out loud ........ I dislike all the abbreviations on Mumsnet

DD, DH, DP, GF, DS and all the others. I get common abbreviations like etc. Xmas but I feel like I need an entire map legend just to read a post. And if we can all write lengthy posts surely we can just write daughter or son? And why do we have to call them 'dear' anything? It pisses me off! So there! ;)

It just annoys me when the acronyms are the same.
Example: BF and BF. Best friend? Boyfriend? Sometimes it's hard to tell.

Lweji · 18/12/2017 19:54

I propose DOP - dear opening poster.
To distinguish from OP -opening post.

The Dear makes all the difference.

paganmolloy · 19/12/2017 16:21

I've never called my husband 'dear' ever. Or any other relatives for that matter so I hate doing it on here. I also dislike the acronyms that are just so flipping long and complicated. I just want to come on and read a few threads when I've finally sat down for 5 mins with a cuppa, and not have to consult a fecking acronym legend to understand what's being said. Each to their own I suppose.

Nobody actually means 'Dear' when they write it though, is just so that 'H' doesn’t get lost in the text. It’s just a code really.

buckbeak · 19/12/2017 16:30

@FenellaMaxwellsPony what does that mean? Blush I've been trying to work it out for months Blush

I could do with a translation of them all, I have no idea what MN is or OP?
And I never call my children dear son in real life! Smh!

Sparklingbrook · 19/12/2017 17:00

www.mumsnet.com/info/acronyms

MN=Mumsnet
OP= Original poster/post

What's 'Smh' mrspatel77?

mrspatel77 · 19/12/2017 17:02

@Sparklingbrook shake my head Grinthought I'd throw it in there!

TheXXFactor · 19/12/2017 17:04

Time for MN to update this or new users are going to be seriously confused by all the threads complaining about people with Cystic Fibrosis Grin

Sparklingbrook · 19/12/2017 17:04

Never heard that one mrspatel77. Grin Perhaps this smiley would be a good replacement Hmm or Confused.

I never call anyone 'dear' in RL, but also I am not called Sparklingbrook in RL. Grin

Sparklingbrook · 19/12/2017 17:05

GP could be grandparents/doctor/small furry animals but reading the thread you can generally work it out.

mrspatel77 · 19/12/2017 17:06

I just think the 'dear' bit is cringe!

buckbeak · 19/12/2017 17:06

Thank you @Smeaton Grin

Sparklingbrook · 19/12/2017 17:08

It's only cringe if you completely overthink it. When i type 'DH' it's just a quicker way of typing 'my husband' and it is known on MN as that. No thinking about it required.

HidingBehindTheWallpaper · 19/12/2017 17:08

Although I have read threads where I think I’m reading about someone’s grandparents and actually it’s theit guinea pig.

fortifiedwithtea · 19/12/2017 17:10

Just giving others a tip; if you see GP on a small pets thread it means Guinea Pig! Grin Not General Practitioner or Grandparent. Its obvious to us who have fur babies but every few months someone posts that they got the wrong end of the stick.

HTH Wink

Substitute others words beginning with D for dear.

Dreadful Husband
Diabolical Son
Dauntless Daughter
Decorous Children (possibly not)

Sparklingbrook · 19/12/2017 17:14

Does anyone actually read it as 'Dear'? I just see it as Son/Daughter/Husband etc.

phoenix1973 · 19/12/2017 17:16

Yanbu.
But that doesn't matter.

Lweji · 20/12/2017 08:11

My favourites are like DDog. Or DCat. (Although the last probably means devil in most situations)

GinIsIn · 20/12/2017 09:04

@buckbeak it’s Oh Do Fuck Off Dear Grin

VladmirsPoutine · 20/12/2017 19:38

The DD, DP, DH, DS stuff is all well and good. It's a bit twee but that's fine.
What is patently ridiculous is Dfish or Ddog; in fact it took me a few tries to write that as my autocorrect also thinks it is a twattish abbreviation.

ArbitraryName · 20/12/2017 20:02

Dfish is not an abbreviation. It’s longer than just writing fish.
