Half the time I have no idea what everyone is going on about. BTDT, DH, DD, DP, YABU etc, etc,

Pikelit Thu 25-Mar-10 17:53:24

YABU, it doesn't take long to learn what they mean and it saves a lot of typing

hocuspontas Thu 25-Mar-10 18:01:57

BTDT? What's that?

Lac365 Thu 25-Mar-10 18:03:55

Oh YAWN.... that's not an acronym btw...

This thread has been done to DEATH!

It's not just MN that does this, you know? Welcome to the Internet OP....

Tiredmumno1 Thu 25-Mar-10 18:13:52

Ta hocus and lac i was wondering what that one meant myself lol. Sorry i mean laugh out loud grin grin grin

FairyCakeBump Thu 25-Mar-10 18:15:48

I hate most of the abbreviations. What makes me laugh is that I can imagine most people on here getting wound up with 'text speak', but the abbreviations are hardly better.

elmofan Thu 25-Mar-10 18:16:08

lol grin

PrettyCandles Thu 25-Mar-10 18:20:53

So read the acronyms thread or page or whatever it now is.

LetThereBeRock Thu 25-Mar-10 18:22:43

YABU.Text speak is fine when one is texting but not online. Abbreviations however are part of the language and culture of the internet and have been for quite a long time now, certainly since I began to use the internet in 1997.
It's appropriate to use them online, so long as one's conversation doesn't consist solely of abbreviations.

BertieBotts Thu 25-Mar-10 18:26:17

DD, DH etc is necessary because if someone started going on about "Fred" how do you know if they mean their husband, their son or their budgie? Hard to keep track of 1000+ posters' families so the abbreviations are necessary.

The others I can understand you getting annoyed with but there are abbreviation lists and MN doesn't overuse them in my experience. Not like other places where they are like "LOL" all the time grin

overmydeadbody Thu 25-Mar-10 18:29:04

Don't use them if you don't like them.

If you don't know what others are on about, then read the bloody acronym list. Not hard.

And I agree with SEA, not a fan of dull names.

Hullygully Thu 25-Mar-10 18:31:01

Fuck off we don't care what you think.

No offence and that.

JackBauer Thu 25-Mar-10 18:34:08

To be serious <<clears throat>> when you are typing ona fast moving thread it is much easier to use DH or DD1/2 than 'my husband' or 'my eldest daughter', 'my youngest child'.
and on veyr fast mving threads time is off the essence. Plus it would make thread titles awfully long.
