The next time you send an email about a poster to that poster by mistake. Probably best not to refer to your users as 'these people'

Mistaken for the poo troll in the middle of the night having posted on the wrong thread. Grin

meditrina · 25/08/2017 08:07

"It's so obvious that it barely needs typing - communicating less weakens a relationship. The more MNHQ distance themselves, the more OK disgruntled posters will feel about having a pop, or leaving, or both."

I think that's an important point.

And I notice that my point about the number of subscribers (not number of visitors) to the trolls sub-Reddit was used as an excuse to grandstand about how big MN is, but my actual question - have they banned 800 people in the last few weeks - was ignored.

And I wasn't trying to get into a pissing contest about relative size. I wanted to establish if it was at all likely that those who have subscribed to the sub-Reddit are all likely to be the banned, as some posts seemed to be hinting.

Not that they have to answer anything, their site their rules. But their attitude to communication is a factor in setting the ethos of the site.

I'd rather have been told that MNHQ isn't prepared to discuss bannings, than have my question used to give an answer to a question no-one had asked.

Twickerhun · 25/08/2017 08:18

I subscribed the the Reddit, went there once. Got frustrated by the attitudes of posters there (and some on here!). I havebt been back to Reddit, but I'm one of the 800. I'm not banned from here.

Some people need to get over themselves, get a better sense of proportion, and step away from their keyboards for a while.

MyRedPepper · 25/08/2017 08:42

Imo the issue is that we, as users, are just seen as consumables.
The important people are the advertisers as they are the ones who give Justine and co the money!
We are just there to support that, can be easily replaced (and no, long standing posters are if no value at all really seeing the size of the site, the number of visitors and persons registered).
Make sense as we do give them any money so why on earth would they need to do more than the minimum??

And it shows in the email that started this thread, the lack on engagement, the lack of response, the NOT caring about telling peel they are banned and why (easier and quicker to ban and hope they will just leave compare to giving explanations and be held accountable).

On the surface, I agree. Money is just money really.
With a longer term look, I don't. This site is made of its members and whoever actually post.
If threads are becoming unhelpful, OP are being hammered by other posters, trolls are being found but not addressed etc etc, the feel of the site will change. It, unsurprisingly, has already.
The issue of course is that Justine and co should not want to see that feel to become too harsh/unwelcoming because people will stop come over. And less people means less advertising revenue.
Or you end up with a trash site (after all some trash newspapers have an audience too somit is a viable business system). If your aim is to have a site for parents by parents, one that is helpful etc etc, then you would want to coud that at all cost. If the idea is to make money with as little effort as possible, then you'll have no issue going down that line.

Right.
So a poster was banned/suspended, wasn't told about it and was emailing to find out and re regged to do.e on here and moan, and made a post over on reddit too?
Sorry if I'm wrong, I'm tired and about to start work.

MsGameandWatching · 25/08/2017 09:39

Grow up seriously, it's all a bit pathetic really.

Yet here you still are, posting away, in a heavily invested kind of way.

This thread is a clusterfuck.

Pagwatch · 25/08/2017 09:56

In fairness Damn, that's no more weird than posting incessantly that you don't care.

I can understand why people post if they are upset about stuff on the site. People do become invested - of course they do.

INFP · 25/08/2017 10:03

This all feels a bit to me like when COKE changed its recipe.

msgame did say I was overly invested for posting

Oh sorry if that stung a bit Smile. I'm just surprised that someone who finds the whole subject and those concerned by it so pathetic would choose to keep involving themselves in it and keep on bumping the thread up. I still don't understand really but never mind, you're clearly getting something out of posting.

NerrSnerr · 25/08/2017 10:30

I have to agree with damnfine. If MN is causing you that much stress or anger then maybe you need to step away. I subscribe to both Reddits as I'm nosy and have far too much time on my hands. On the trolls one I just don't know how some people can care so much about the website they apparently dislike.

Justine did not tell anyone they were a shoplifter. Anyone who thinks that is deliberately missing the point.

endehors · 25/08/2017 10:30

In fairness Damn, that's no more weird than posting incessantly that you don't care

Oh yes! This has already been noticed, too Grin

Sensible posts Meditrina and red pepper. I hope Mumsnet staff take note, but who knows...

CoteDAzur · 25/08/2017 10:31

"Mnhq seem to be happy to listen to any ideas on improving things"

The phrase Justine used is not "improving things" but "moving on".

That is NOT listening to concerns and working to resolve the issues that come up. It is ignoring them & hoping people will give up and get busy with the next BF vs FF thread.

endehors · 25/08/2017 10:34

Justine did not tell anyone they were a shoplifter

No the best comparison to use though was it? Grin. Shoplifting in Boots/posters who are suspended Mumsnet don't wish to enter into a dialogue with.

Pagwatch · 25/08/2017 10:36

Of course you should post incessantly if you want to.
I've just read the thread and it just struck me as odd that your point seems to be repeating over and over gain that other posters are obsessed.

It just occurred to me that it's an odd way to support MNHQs desire to reach some accord and consensus. It's kind of the opposite.

I agree with several of Maryz comments and it seems to me that the reporting/suspension/deletion issues all just come down to the fact that MN is unable to control the trolls. i think the 'success' of penis beaker moved MN from a fuzzy position on trolls into a completely conflicted one.

I'd love to post some positive suggestions but I think the conflict between publicity/ hits and the integrity of the board is unresovable now.

CoteDAzur · 25/08/2017 10:39

Re "It's like asking Boots to respect shoplifters because they're regular customers"

It's not, since re-regging is not a crime but even if it were...

Boots would still have to show respect to a customer caught shoplifting. If they were caught on camera to be mocking, verbally abusing, or being otherwise disrespectful to the customer between the time he is caught shoplifting and the time he is handed off to the police, they would rightly be dragged through the proverbial mud and possibly pursued through the courts.

The problem isn't just the casual disregard of long-term posters clear in that email. It's not the use of "these people". It's the clear condescension in "Why waste our time replying to MNers we no longer like? Let's just ban & ignore them. Our purposes are not served by talking to them" etc.

I would still like to know what MN's "purposes" are, by the way. You know, "our purposes" that are not served by talking to MNers no longer in favour.

IgnoreMeEveryOtherReindeerDoes · 25/08/2017 11:27

@Dam It seems that there are issues around the reporting also.

I used Reddit to read up on certain topic ages ago so stil haven't got the hang of it (was same when I came from Netmums to here). And only just see more of discussion over there after I got fucked off with what seemed a lot of bullshit threads here.

I duno what's happened to mods as even though I don't recall names they was always about, even joining in conversation.

Thinking about it I can't remember last time I read a thread where I would be laughing like some mad cow. Don't know when it changed but it suddenly occurred to me last night and reading such bullshit obvious troll posts in between threads where op was being torn to shreds.

Of course things change but change isn't always for the better.

I've got no issues with MN as has been really helpful at moment with regards to my DD and Uni but that is due to the people not MN its self.

So I've 'change' my view to which I had from when I first posted in thread. I starting to see where they coming from now, bit dim but the light bulb eventually turns on for me

IgnoreMeEveryOtherReindeerDoes · 25/08/2017 11:37

@Nerr You telling someone to step away whilst you subscribe to Reddit just to be nosey Doris has me scratching my chin.

Yes Katron I agree as so this week I've learnt from different threads I'm racist, stupid and uneducated just as well old age has given me thick skin and get bored easy from engaging conversation

Cote I suspect that MN purpose is to make money, as much as possible for the shareholders/owners.
I'm sure they have some sort of guidelines at HQ to be able to say who is and who isn't 'wasting their time'. I suspect it's basically anyone who starts taking too much of their otime (eg has been reported often, is asking questions that are uncomfortable, let alone is doing some digging as to who owns what and so on).

When I first came here Justine was one of us, a mum with young dcs who was trying to be a mum AND work.
Now we have a CEO that is probably just looking at figures and working out the best way to make big profit (selling the site?? If the Reddit people are to be believed) with no care for the users of the site (because we don't pay anything to THEM)
