The next time you send an email about a poster to that poster by mistake. Probably best not to refer to your users as 'these people'

Today's hot thread is just a nonsense flypaper in my opinion. It never actually reflects what is being discussed and is just annoying. Why bother with them if they don't mean anything - ie largest # of comments in x amount of time.

MadamePomfrey · 24/08/2017 20:13

I agree with all/any/a mixture of the above. It's also not the first time I have read any of them. HQ always say they are having a chat/think about it but the update about what will be done doesn't come! So I won't hold my breath.

For me there are 2 issues

  1. HQ need to have a sit down and decide what they will/won't be doing from here on out make it clear then we as users can decide if we want to stay here or not. No more back and forth.

  2. The tone of HQ is off at the moment. I completely get that you are all people at a job and you absolutely not deserve to be abused. However the overall tone coming from HQ at the moment isn't nice it's patronising and abrupt and borderline rude at times! I know if I spoke to people in my job the way people have been spoken to on here I'd be on performance management if not worse. I get it's a big site now and the friendly banter on threads is gone but I don't think it needs to be like it is at the moment.

That's my 2 pennies worth I do hope things can settle again I have had some lovely threads on here GinWine for everyone

Oops!

INFP - I'm an intellectual snob. I admit it and I'm not ashamed of it. Having said that, I've also had a massive amount of support from the SN community here which has been a total lifelife for me.

A year ago, the thread I linked to in my previous post would have been largely populated by helpful advice - from lawyers and insurance professionals as well as people from the SN community. There would have been the odd 'you're fuckin avin a laff' posts but they would have been in the minority.

The balance has tipped in favour of the clickbait GFs. And when I read a thread like this, I find it absolutely heartbreaking to read the absolute kicking the OP - who is in a horrible situation - has got. I'm ashamed to be part of a forum that leaves those kind of posts standing tbh. And I do wonder if MN has now got so big that actually self-moderation just doesn't bloody work any more.

PandorasXbox · 24/08/2017 20:26

agree with someone else earlier that there is a lot of people with a rather large opinion of there self importance because they have been here x amount of years.

How is this "self importance" displayed? I'm intrigued.

INFP · 24/08/2017 20:31

Wow. Well, well done you for being able to mix with the little people.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 24/08/2017 20:32

They could also put on a notice when a banned poster tries to log on to say 'you have been banned.

That would mean that anyone could check if anyone has been banned. Not necessarily an issue, but maybe something to consider?

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 24/08/2017 20:33

Thing is that those of us who've been here a long time

I have been here a lomg time

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 24/08/2017 20:33

*long

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 24/08/2017 20:34

By thinking that MNHQ will care that a tiny group of people has set up a sub reddit to replace MAN?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 24/08/2017 20:34

MN, not MAN

SerfTerf · 24/08/2017 20:40

I don't think they're trying to compete with MN.

They grouped over there i initially to debrief about David. Now they're just getting grieveancea off their chests in peace. Some people are genuinely feeling ill-used.

The crux of it is the split between those who see MN as a communion sorts and those who think it's "just a website".

SerfTerf · 24/08/2017 20:40

Community not communion. That would be weird.

JigglyTuff · 24/08/2017 20:42

I know INFP! I deserve a special badge I think. Hard work sometimes!

I'm generally not such an utter twat. But I've watched the OP of the thread I linked to being kicked and kicked and kicked. And the ramping up of that and the pleasure of the indignation. It's not a 'lighthearted' situation. And yet people are doing that. And feel like it's completely fine to be like that.

On that subject, the Cologne sex attacks attracted some really, really disturbing posters, many of whom I think are still around.

I don't think MN wants to get a rep for far right disablism does it? I can't think that's part of it's business model.

Justine - you asked for suggestions on how to move forward.

I don't know about you, but every now and again I get messages from Facebook asking me to take a quick survey, where they ask me questions about whether I think FB cares about me, takes my privacy seriously, how I use FB and so on. I'm always a bit Hmm about a few of the questions, but the fact that the same thing is asked time and time again gives them (I presume) some interesting data about how its users feel about it.

Have you considered doing something similar for MN users so that you can see changing trends in how the site is used, how users perceive it etc etc?

PerfumeIsAMessage · 24/08/2017 20:48

I reported the Cologne threads till I was sick to my stomach. Alt right politico trolling gathering as many racist potential agitators as they could. All hidden beneath a none too deep veneer of concern for the women involved. They even organized their own web chat, here, on MN, unauthorised by HQ. Obviously, being the thick shits that most racists are, they got the wrong MP involved iirc.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 24/08/2017 20:48

Now they're just getting grieveancea off their chests in peace

Maybe but some of the posts over there are just as nasty as the things they are upset/complaining about.

OvO · 24/08/2017 20:51

The MNHQ folk of old seemed to like us. They liked the site, the posters, their job. It seemed like they cared. The newby MNHQ clearly aren't fussed about this place beyond getting their pay check.

It's made a noticeable and negative difference.

I blame Olivia. She should never have left us.

I stayed away from posting on the thread Jiggly mentioned as I know of someone who was killed by an uninsured driver who hadn't passed their test.

However the direct nastiness isn't ok.

INFP · 24/08/2017 21:03

JigglyTuff I absolutely get where you're coming from on that particular thread. Bloody keyboard warrior mentality at best.

But...I'm not sure that deleting offensive posts is the answer. Personally I would leave them up in all their cuntishness with some sort of pointer/mark that clarifies the stance of MNHQ.

JigglyTuff · 24/08/2017 21:03

It has been awful Perfume. And it came up again post-Manchester. There is attempted grooming going on when it comes to race issues and I don't think it's being dealt with at all. I've reported and reported and got nowhere.

Again, I don't think you can rely on reports to deal with this kind of thing when there are so many posters. It's just open to planned abuse

StoorieHoose · 24/08/2017 21:03

No the message would only appear when they had supplied their email address and password

Polter · 24/08/2017 21:04

Dixie I posted but PMed too. It's really not good when posters don't feel comfortable posting supportive and kind responses on an actual thread.
