The next time you send an email about a poster to that poster by mistake. Probably best not to refer to your users as 'these people'

I get automatic notifications when I report and the post is either left or deleted.

What form do these notifications take?

@lrb978

I think it works both ways actually, using your analogy the customers/clients/product or whatever still want the same service now its a multi national chain than what they had when it was a niche company.

These types of conversations have been had on many large forums over the past couple of years, I remember them happening in Usenet groups just as everyone was starting to come online, its a natural evolution of forums as new entrants join up, but there is a lot of gate keeping happening just the same as always, there is the usual Gate Keeping that creeps up, as in this thread, loose definitions of Trolls which 9 times out of 10 is actually just differing opinion (obviously ignoring the really nasty stuff).

I am more surprised to see apparently many long term posters surprised at becoming the a product when a fair few years ago the boards where generally patting themselves on the back as they had been mentioned in The Guardian.

I think the mod who sent the email fucked up and should really not be a mod anymore, but I agree with someone else earlier that there is a lot of people with a rather large opinion of there self importance because they have been here x amount of years.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 24/08/2017 18:11

Ah, but those aren't the report notifications everyone means. You used to get a proper reply from a proper person who, if your information was deemed interesting enough would engage.
"What makes you think X is really Y"
"Looks like you may be right"
"We get where you're coming from and see why you think X is Y but at the moment, we just don't have the proof" (that one in response to a very longterm scamming troll I and a bazillion others reported on a seemingly daily basis)
Speaking of which, HQ confirmed back then that they looked at PMs because when I was madly reporting someone else I still believe to be a scammer, was told that "a look at their PMs confirms they have received, but not accepted, offers of money"

AuntieStella · 24/08/2017 18:35

"There ends my involvement really, perhaps others should try the same simple approach and not over analyse?"

We don't actually have the choice.

MNHQ do, and the system you describe is the new one, which appears to have coincided with controversial moderation decisions, a feeling of distance from MNHQ and increases in troll hunting on threads because it seems as if nothing is happening.

Asking whether this recent change to the new system is actually a good thing is, I think a fair question. It is a pity MNHQ did not give the promised answer in the thread earlier this month.

Ceto · 24/08/2017 18:44

I don't want to keep flogging a dead horse, SandyMN, but if you thought Sciatica was or could be a troll, it's difficult to understand why you let her start a new thread, or why it took so long to contact her to sort out your questions given that her back problems clearly didn't stop her posting. I'm mostly sympathetic to mods round here, but I can understand that people wonder about why you were so quick to delete her thread and leave it deleted when other more obvious troll or offensive threads are allowed to stay.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 24/08/2017 18:46

An automated page acknowledges the report and gives you the option of returning to the thread.

Apologies. I misunderstood your original post and thought you got additional notifications about whether a thread has been deleted or not.

derxa · 24/08/2017 18:53

Placemarking only

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 24/08/2017 18:55

That's right - and now you just get a message saying "we don't reply individually to reports now"

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 24/08/2017 19:09

It's not that I want a personal reply from a mod,but I don't think an automated email is a big ask. It would be even better if you could get a follow up automated email with

Thank you for your report the thread [ ] The thread has now been

.... Deleted. See attached deletion message.
.... Posted on by MNHQ. See attached post.
....Left alone. We couldn't see anything amiss at this time, but please feel free to continue to report posts that you believe break our talk guidelines.

Really shouldn't be hard to do.

@JustineMumsnet said:
"We would love to hear any thoughts on how we might move on (although obviously some banned posters may not be able to contribute directly - but please feel do free to drop me a line via [email protected])"

That's only possible if you acknowledge the existence of the person dropping you a line. You won't know who I am, but If you'd like I could send a random Mumsnetter a PM with my real email address in to make sure you can read it. (Light-hearted). At the moment the only way I can communicate with you is via this thread.

"But I agree, as said, the vitriol felt by some is far from ideal and we'd love to mend some fences if at all possible"

Super. I like nice fences. Keeps zombie badgers out. Presumably that means I'm un-banned now?

So, I assume you've never been banned yourself. What happens is you try to turn on Mumsnet but have to login. It keeps telling you that you're not able to, so you retry you password for 10 minutes, and try different email addresses for 10 minutes. It doesn't tell you that you're banned.
You might then visit your inbox and find out that a HQ staff member thinks you would be happier being banned. Hmm
Any communication with "contactus@mumsnet" is then ignored. Totally. Not even a message back to say you're being ignored. That means you don't even know if your e-mail has reached the right place. It's as if you don't value you recently banned content providers at all! Shock

I'm off to look at some CablePorn over on Reddit. Please e-mail me if you mean what you say about mending fences.

IgnoreMeEveryOtherReindeerDoes · 24/08/2017 19:25

@justanotherlurker I disagree that the mod who fucked up shouldn't be allowed to mod anymore (I assume these are paid mods because if I wasn't being paid and had to read some of replies I tell everyone to get fucked). Any way this is a mod not a MP, I've made so pretty big fuck up at work before & having to face and deal with effects of screw up and having to rectify was enough. If I been sacked company would of what became star worker Wink

Btw I've been here fuck knows how many years and I couldn't tell you names of mods. I only know of name Justine.

Oh I read holiday back lady thread I even made it to hearing she got back. Is there more? I do like a happy ending

TiggyF · 24/08/2017 19:28

I think that mod will be buying the doughnuts tomorrow.

Seeing as MN seems to be reading this thread, would you mind popping over to the thread linked above which has endless posts which are hideously disablist and are being allowed to stand, despite reports. And my reports aren't being responded to.

Perhaps you're all in a meeting Hmm

BeyondLimitsAndWhatever · 24/08/2017 19:31

"You might then visit your inbox and find out that a HQ staff member thinks you would be happier being banned"

That's a lucky ban-ee who gets an email!!

When I was suspended, I did the ten mins of trying to log in, nothing. Then I emailed , nothing. The next day, someone started a sitestuff thread as a few of us (all longer term members, not new reg emails) had all lost the ability to sign in (later confirmed to have been suspended) together. Following that, we all got the same c&p email. Some were let back in, some haven't been back since.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 24/08/2017 19:33

Thing is that those of us who've been here a long time know how to parse a sentence properly. Posters who've joined post-PB don't even understand what that means.

Today's 'hot' thread is apparently: 'Shocked that my hairdresser cancelled my appointment because I was late'

Gosh. Really?

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 24/08/2017 19:42

think it's a daft, why not just send a message to the poster and let them know you are banning/suspending them rather than waiting until they contact you

I agree - it'd be easier for MNHQ because they wouldn't have to keep ignoring emails. It could be very simply automated.

Dear User [X and all other names]

You have been banned from mumsnet for [X] (reasonably detailed response - I presume MAN considers bannings so the considerations should be listed eg the comments and the threads or the pms) Given these reasons we are unlikely to the lift the ban, however, if you wish to appeal please email us on [X]

Alternatively

Dear User [X and all other names]

You have been suspended for [X] (reasonably detailed response - I presume MAN considers bannings so the considerations should be listed eg the comments and the threads or the pms). You will be unable to post until [X time GMT on y date]. If you wish to appeal blah blah blah...

StoorieHoose · 24/08/2017 19:51

They could also put on a notice when a banned poster tries to log on to say 'you have been banned. Please check your email account associated with your MN account for further clarification.' Instead of have users spend 10 minutes trying to log in
