Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

Flowers Justine

Don't misunderstand me. It's not that I particularly want the buttons but more that I'm wondering what other features I'm also not seeing for some reason.

MTPurse · 16/03/2016 14:46

Do you have Social Media turned off?

Yes just looked in customise.

P1nkP0ppy · 16/03/2016 14:46

I don't know about Google+ (does anyone actually use that?) or Play but neither Youtube nor Google Maps has screens full of text in the same way MN does. Its not the same thing at all

Exactly ^, I do not use any of these!

It's making me feel very queasy trying to read threads on MN and I have no wish to end up with a migraine 😡😡😡

So, MNHQ, your excuse is that all the other kids are also doing it?

You know that doesn't cut it with us mums, don't you? Wink

trufflesnout · 16/03/2016 14:50

Why is it bold though? Everyone's typing in bold for me (is that something I can change in my settings?).

Lweji · 16/03/2016 14:51

Not bold here. Desktop and Chrome

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/03/2016 14:53

I feel quite patronised by that response. As someone who is visually impaired I can categorically state that this is not an accessible type face in this format for me.

It is clearly not being implemented in a way that is easy to read for many people. A breezy 'oh a few little changes, you'll get used to it, soz for those who claim they find it difficult' response is fairly insulting to those of us with sight difficulties.

I am on my ipad. I find it very difficult to read. This is not a style preference, it is an accessibilty issue.

trufflesnout · 16/03/2016 14:53

I'm desktop & Chrome too. When I'm writing in this textbox I'm writing with regular type. When I hit send it joins all the others and becomes bold too.

haggisaggis · 16/03/2016 14:53

I agree with others - it's pretty dire. Like something the dc would produce if they were let loose on my pc - it's certainly hard to read. Also the links on left are impossible to make out.

MTPurse · 16/03/2016 14:53

truffle

Not bold here, on the screenshot you took of my post the only bold was the first line not the second line Confused

I'm on Desktop Safari.

'I've used many forums and never found one before where it actually hurts to read the walls of text'

Absolutely, I have seen nothing like this anywhere on the internet. It is painful and a struggle.

trufflesnout · 16/03/2016 14:55

Okay, here's some regular type for you to compare it to MTPurse

trufflesnout · 16/03/2016 14:55

I see only bold

MTPurse · 16/03/2016 14:56

Customise is on a drop down bar at the top next to the large 'Talk'.

Lweji · 16/03/2016 14:56

I'm doing a three browser comparison and Chrome shows the lightest. Both Firefox and Explorer have a darker version.

I still haven't got them, Maryz.

Lweji · 16/03/2016 14:59

Is that why they have a thread for newbies? Grin
Which I can't find through the normal channels?

trufflesnout · 16/03/2016 15:00

Yeah I couldn't find customise either, was expecting it to be under the My Mumsnet bit

Lweji · 16/03/2016 15:00

I'm blaming MNHQ for forcing me to download (bleurgh) Edge. All in the interest of science, of course. Halo (this one I like)

it's tiny in edge nd chrome, but somehow seems to be more readable - more space between individual letters.
