Heads up - we're about to introduce a wee (it's really not that big) site update...

Morning folks,

As some of you pointed out at the time, the new navigation bar we introduced a little while back on the desktop site sits a little uncomfortably with what goes underneath it, design-wise.

So today we're introducing a little refresh of the rest of Talk. This update is also a bit closer to the mobile version, which it currently clashes with, so those who frequently switch from desktop to mobile will get a less variable experience.

If you use Mumsnet solely on mobile or tablet: as you were! Nothing’s going to change for you.

For desktop users, the functionality is unchanged (except for the addition of a threads I'm on button on the left hand side) but the fonts will look a little different.

We realise that any change can be difficult (and not necessarily welcome!) but please do give it a few days, as very often, we find, things like this just take a little getting used to and soon enough you've moved on and won't remember the difference.

As ever, we’re really keen to have your feedback, though, so do post below with your thoughts (we’re confident that you will Grin). Also, if anyone fancies getting involved in the testing of this kind of stuff, do shout, we're always looking for volunteers.

We’ll switch everything over in the next hour or so - let us know what you think! We’ll keep this thread stickied in Site Stuff and Active Conversations throughout at the day.

Miss 'active' - it's got nothing to do with the SS (or Hitler) Hmm

Damn iPad.

SoupDragon · 16/03/2016 14:31

The font is truly awful.

Katedotness1963 · 16/03/2016 14:31

Looks like I'll be spending a lot more time on the housework over the next few days. I can only look at this for a few minutes at a time...

RatOnnaStick · 16/03/2016 14:36

Shock Thats a little extreme. It would take more than a dodgy font to get me spending any more time on housework.

RobotMenu · 16/03/2016 14:37

Agree with the eye problems. I don't really care what Google do or how much they test. They are not the same.

ExtraHotLatteToGo · 16/03/2016 14:37

I've just come back to MN after ages away, I was getting sucked back in...but this will put a stop to that.

iPad user here, definitely noticing the difference. It's like the letters have been stretched up. Too tall, too spacey. Definitely too difficult to read.

Oh well, real world here I come again.

cozietoesie · 16/03/2016 14:37

I have no buttons either, Maryz.

OurBlanche · 16/03/2016 14:38

I've had a further read... maybe the Slab variation would be better, if this isn't it! Condensed looks good too!

I have to admit I have been having a good snoop at it and, in my once expert opinion, it is a bit of a hodge podge of the good bits of other typefaces. It is sooooooooooooooo very like Helvetica, but with some odd roundings, taperings where curves meet the ascenders and the height / horizontal placement/proportion would have been questioned in my old job - the gap at the top of the 'f' is an example of a squeeze too far, perhaps. Some strokes are too truncated, Q for example, the down stroke is very small (Helvetica's continues into the centre).

It seems it is part of Androids attempt to take over the world/take on Apple at their own game.

hellsbellsmelons · 16/03/2016 14:39

Agree - I may be taking a break from MN for the next couple of days.

cozietoesie · 16/03/2016 14:39

Although perhaps I should keep quiet about that. Grin

QueenElizardbeth · 16/03/2016 14:40

I'm on classic too Maryz and the buttons are just there

cozietoesie · 16/03/2016 14:40

The app is the same as far as I can see. Smile

MTPurse · 16/03/2016 14:40

Maryz & Cozie. The buttons are under DOTD and Trending, They are topics, active and I'm on buttons.

TheSilveryPussycat · 16/03/2016 14:40

Totally agree, rat. Horses for courses, whether it be the application being used, or the hardware.

I too had to use Ctl + on my PC, had had similar happen before, so at first thought it was a glitch.

Only recently, I got my first Tablet - and was pleasantly surprised by how easy MN was to use on it. But on a tablet, you can swipe to resize...

cozietoesie · 16/03/2016 14:41

Interesting.

I have Social Media turned off.

MTPurse · 16/03/2016 14:41

I have nothing but 'white' on the left hand side.

HPsauciness · 16/03/2016 14:42

Now everyone's user name has disappeared! More testing needed Mumsnet, I'm afraid.

middlings · 16/03/2016 14:42

I like it! I like the spaciness of it all. And I like the text in the message box.

I'm wearing reading glasses and it doesn't hurt at all!

ExtraHotLatteToGo · 16/03/2016 14:43

The whole thing is weird different. The title, the topics, the area with Discussions/Trending etc. I thought I'd actually accidentally changed to the App version instead.

You've broken MN.

cozietoesie · 16/03/2016 14:44

MT

Do you have Social Media turned off?

BYOSnowman · 16/03/2016 14:44

It is too pastel - contrast to white is bad. And don't too elongated.

Maudd · 16/03/2016 14:45

Another who thinks it's all much too pale, and I'm genuinely straining to read the spindly, headache-inducing little font. It's awful, sorry.
