Site outage update

Hi everyone,

First and foremost: sorry for the loss of usual service over the last few hours.

To explain what's been going on: shortly after 10pm last night, we started receiving a large amount of spurious (i.e. automatic, rather than human) traffic. This is known in the trade as a denial of service attack: one in which a person, or organisation, deliberately floods a website with requests for pages, with the intention of overwhelming its servers and preventing bona fide users from accessing the site.

It goes without saying that we're doing everything we can to repel borders and keep the site up and running. We'll post on our social channels with any further updates (we're over here on Facebook and Twitter, if you don't follow us already), and in the meantime, thanks, as usual, for bearing with us.

MNHQ

They say they have lots more planned. Confused

IReallyAmHephzibah · 12/08/2015 11:42

Is there a problem???
I have been logged out of Facebook and they are requesting that I change my password as I have had a 'shared password stolen from another site.'.............................
Oh dear, the only shared passwords I have are Facebook and mumsnet!!! Sad

youarekiddingme · 12/08/2015 11:43

'Twas a very long night.

I'm assuming as MNHQ hasn't recommended password changes we are all ok?

MissDexter · 12/08/2015 11:44

It's not the real Anonymous, it's Ayynonymous who only have just over 30 followers

SewingAndCakes · 12/08/2015 11:44

BastardGoDarkly I don't do Twitter TBH, I was just being nosy Smile

HowDdo2You · 12/08/2015 11:44

Oh dear this is why I keep separate emails and passwords.

GarlicDoughballsInGlitter · 12/08/2015 11:47

That twitter feed is weird! Confused

twirlypoo · 12/08/2015 11:48

He has deleted some tweets I think - its went down from 21 to 19 (but I don't do twitter so I don't really know if thats relevant)

WitchofScots · 12/08/2015 11:49

twirlypoo I don't think it takes much to make an incredibly small penis go all tingly does it?

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 12/08/2015 11:49

Can someone link to his Twitter feed? Sounds hilarious. Grin

FolknNorah · 12/08/2015 11:52

Yeah, I've got separate passwords and have just changed mine again. I'm not great at technology so it's all worrying, but am hoping that as we haven't been told anything else, or to do anything else, it's ok?

I'm not very reassured tbh.

shaska · 12/08/2015 11:52

Is it just me or did he delete the tweets where you lot started giving him a hard time?

twitter.com/DadSecurity

Seems to me he's probably dumb enough to follow himself, or even tweet to himself, so checking the followers/followed on that Tom account might be wise.

IpsyUpsyDaisyDo · 12/08/2015 11:54

The Twitter guy

HowDdo2You · 12/08/2015 11:55

He put a picture up then took it down.

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 12/08/2015 11:56

Why does he care about us so much? I cannot imagine ever putting time and effort into something I don't like.

How sad that anyone should fill their lives with targeting things they hate :( poor poppet.

Anyhow, he's picked a nice day for it. The beach beckons! Grin

BeyondTheWall · 12/08/2015 11:57

If he rereouted the link and has data, then why does he keep calling it a ddos attack? Confused does he not know what a ddos attack is?

GreyAndGoldInTheMeadow · 12/08/2015 11:57

That Ayynonymous looks to be a lovely sort Hmm

RattleAndRoll · 12/08/2015 11:58

He's saying he's got someone's password. I'm wondering wether to change mine now, or wait for instruction to do so.

IAmAPaleontologist · 12/08/2015 11:59

He has far too much time on his hands.

He is welcome to my password really, it won't work for anything else and he can see anything I have posted on here anyway.

BeyondTheWall · 12/08/2015 12:00

Last time we actually were hacked, changing passwords was pointless. They just (iirc) saw the new one too.

HowDdo2You · 12/08/2015 12:00

Normally you are told to change your password when all is closed off, trap doors I think they call them, are locked. I think he is still inside so chances to password would be useless right now.

BeyondTheWall · 12/08/2015 12:02

If you have the same password and email address for anything else though, i'd change that.

VivaLeBeaver · 12/08/2015 12:03

Sorry, I think it might be my Dh. Desperate measures to get me to do some housework! Wink

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 12/08/2015 12:04

Could MNHQ confirm whether or when we need to change passwords?

HowDdo2You · 12/08/2015 12:04

Weird message deleted by mumsnet came up then I clicked and saw your post.
